24.01.2022 Following on from the Pre-Kindys Reading Challenge launch last week, the Pre-Kindy room have been exploring a range of texts, drama and materials that allow the children to explore literacy in a functional and playful way. Today during their daily calendar time some of our teachers took on roles/characters to act out stories using a variety of communication modes.... When imaginative/dramatic play is shared with others, this becomes sociopath-dramatic play. This involves the use of props, costumes or scenery. This practice develops the childrens oral language and allows the children to explore and create new worlds using their imaginations. Below is a video of their performance. Do you have any ideas for our next live theatre show?
24.01.2022 As apart of science week, the Nursery children learnt about gravity! Miss Mel knew of the childrens love of balloons, so thought that using helium in the balloons would be a great way to show this. The children helped Miss Mel fill the balloons and tie them to areas of the playground and let them reach up to the ceiling inside. Miss Mel showed the children how if you pull the helium balloons down onto the floor and let go, they would float back up to the ceiling. Then the ...children learnt that if you dont hold on to helium balloons and they dont have a roof to catch them, then they will keep floating up into the sky. What a fantastic activity to learn about gravity in an age appropriate way! Science education activities provide children with opportunities to develop and practice many different skills and attributes. These include communication skills, collaborative skills, team working and perseverance, as well as analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.

20.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day, a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? and support those struggling with lifes ups and downs. This years message is Theres more to say after R U OK?. During group times import discussions were had and the children were encouraged to look out for their peers by recognising emotions and asking R U OK? Emotion puzzles were also placed out allowing the children to recognise, identify and... label feelings which is a valuable life skill. Art experiences also allowed the children to express and represent their feelings and emotions through mark making with a range of mediums. Including social-emotional activities in the classroom can not only be a fun and engaging experience for early learners, but it also presents the opportunity to start important conversations that lead to a more profound understanding. Through a range of experiences we have discussed friendships, feelings and emotions with the children at Bumper Bears.

18.01.2022 The Kindergarten educators noticed a number of children were bringing in Audio Books from home and presenting these for show and tell. To extend upon this, their educators formed a listening centre in the classroom! A listening center is a designated spot in the classroom with a CD player and multiple headphones, where children typically listen to recordings of books and follow along in hard copies. Hearing a book read aloud can help children focus on the sounds of words, re...ad without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Many books on CD have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. When children regularly listen to the sophisticated language of stories, poetry, and nonfiction language that they may not have access to in any other way, they slowly assimilate the tools for critical thought and effective cognition. When children hear literature read aloud, they see how printed words can be closely connected with spoken words. In order for children to become successful readers, they need not only stronger vocabularies but they also need the ability to explore different genres and writing styles. By sharing a wide variety of genres and writing styles with children, we prepare children with important experiences and knowledge for making sense of different texts when they encounter them on their own.
17.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week the Kindergarten Children learnt all about Australias history and culture. To extend upon this they then explored Australian landscapes. The children took great interest in the provocation of Uluru and asked their educators a number of questions. 15.01.2022 Yesterday we celebrated Red Nose Day! Red Nose Day in Australia is the major fundraising campaign for SIDS and Kids, a very important organisation that focuses on sudden and unexpected deaths in babies and children. In Australia, nine children still die suddenly and unexpectedly every day. Thats more than 3,000 babies and young children every year more than double the national road toll. We are still losing them to stillbirth, SIDS, and fatal sleeping accidents. So while incredible gains have been made to reduce sudden infant deaths since the first Red Nose Day in 1988, the fight must continue! Thank you to our incredible families and community for your contributions! Every dollar raised on Red Nose Day helps save little lives and support grief-stricken families.

12.01.2022 The Pre Kindy children have continued to extend their knowledge of oral hygiene by engaging in a range of experiences to acknowledge Dental Health Week. This week the children have had the opportunity to engage with a new resource called Play-Doh Dr Drill N Fill. Using this resource the children have had the opportunity to play the role of a dentist, starting the patients appointment by shaping their teeth with the tooth mold and then checking them with the mirror. They ha...ve fought cavities using the electric drill and then filled them in with more play-doh compound. If there was something stuck in between the teeth, the tweezers were used to pull this out. Some patients even had braces added using the roller tool! Following on from this, the children were introduced to the food pyramid where they sorted different foods into areas such as fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy, meat/eggs/nuts and sometimes food. Their educators extended upon the childrens interest in art by allowing the children to form their own craft versions of their teeth and their mouths using pens, scissors and glue. The children then demonstrated how they brush their teeth using a tooth brush with tooth paste. During group times the Pre Kindy educators have engaged in discussions with the children about when they should brush their teeth and how long for, incorporating new tooth brushing songs!
12.01.2022 Welcome to the Kindergarten Restaurant! As an extension from The Kindergarten Cafe, the Kindergarten educators have formed a Restaurant within the classroom. This space has included real pots and pans, kitchen utensils, pretend food, egg cartons, a seating area, the childrens own menus, pretend money and a real cash register which was donated by one of our families. The aim of this play based learning approach has been to provide the most natural and meaningful process by w...hich children can construct knowledge and understandings, practice life skills and immerse themselves in a broad range of literacy and numeracy concepts. Engaging in this style of play based learning has offered the children the opportunity to interact with others, develop communication strategies and work in collaboration with peers and adults. This environment has been child focused and has allowed the children to engage in meaningful learning experiences with one another. The childrens interests have formed the basis of this space which has been carefully planned and presented in ways that are inviting for the children to explore and learn within.

08.01.2022 This week is National Science Week! National science week is Australias annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries museums and science centres. Today our Pre Kindy children engaged in two science experiences! The first was a moving milk experiment. Food colour was added to milk in a dish where the children w...atched as the food colouring began to swirl and move around as a soap soaked cotton bud was added! Many shades began to form, combining but also separating. 06.01.2022 Nature Ice Cube Painting! This activity extends upon the Juniors interest in flowers and nature as they continue their exploration into the season of Spring! The children began this inquiry by placing leaves and flowers inside an ice cube tray and then adding their choice of food colouring. Involving children to be part of achieving tasks together is a great way to introduce the concept of teamwork which is important in developing their cooperation, social and emotional skill...s. Once the ice was set the children then created paintings using their coloured/ nature ice cubes. Colour ice cube painting is a sensory rich activity that provides a fun and colourful experience for children. Children get to explore colour mixing, and patterns whist the ice cubes provides a cold, wet, slippery texture.
