04.01.2022 **Let Their Voices Be Heard** Let's talk about Identity! In 2014 the Bundaberg Child & Youth Protection Partnership undertook a project capturing the voices of ...our community’s children and young people. When we listened to the voices of Bundaberg children, this is what they said about IDENTITY. We said that identity is having the freedom to be ourselves and to be happy in our own skin. It is about ‘who I am, where I come from and where I belong’. We are all unique with special gifts and talents. Our family, friends and the people around us are important to us and help us become who we want to be. I am awesome I am free to be me. Children told us I am special because I can wiggle my ears Anonymous, 9 years I have strength and a brain Anonymous, 8 years My friends and family care about me Anonymous, 12 years Children told us what does Identity mean to me. I am me! Anonymous, 6 years Culture and identity are important otherwise you feel lost and don’t know where you belong. Kahlia, 13 years Children told us how they are different Because I love trains and aviation Jack, 8 years Because I live in a different country Anonymous, 10 years My face looks different Anonymous, 7 years When we speak regularly to children about their safety it is a powerful way to build open communication with them. Remind children that they can talk to you or a trusted adult about anything, no matter how big or small their worry might be. It is always the responsibility of adults to keep children safe from harm child abuse is never a child’s fault. Some ways you might help a child is:- Help children to identify trusted adults (both within the family and outside) they can talk to, if they are worried, upset, or don’t feel safe. Create a list together. Make sure the trusted adults know they are on your child’s list. Have you created a safe adult list with a child? If you work in a school encourage age-appropriate discussions about difficult topics such as bullying, exam stress, mental health and different types of abuse. Ensure conversations aim to develop young people’s strengths and resilience. As a teacher or school staffer, do you feel equipped to have these discussions at school? Start conversations with your child from a place of curiosity Can you remember a time when you knew you were safe? How did it feel?. How do you start important conversations with your child?
