25.01.2022 Thank you to all who attended last night’s U3A Computer Club video meeting. The main topic covered was QR codes QR stands for Quick Response and information is stored within its maze-like lines that can be read by smartphones. You are likely to see a QR code at the front of a Café, Restaurant on any business that needs to record your details. This is a quick way to direct you to a webpage without you having to type in the address. ... For Covid 19 tracking purposes it will take you to a page where you enter your details, First and Surname, email address, home address and phone number. By pointing your phones camera if it is a fairly new device 2017 onward or using a dedicated QR reader App provided you have an internet connection you will be taken to a page where you record your details and the time you attended. There are a couple of advantages to doing this on a webform, firstly it is more hygienic than people all writing in a book or on the one surface, you are only touching your own phone not sharing a pen that may or may not be clean. Also for most businesses if you have signed in online once next time you visit just scan the QR code on entering and you it should recognize your details and record the time in for you. During the meeting we looked at a very secure APP for scanning QR codes from Kaspersky it checks the website you are going to is a safe site. We found the app to be quick and easy. I and others have decided that this is the way to scan QR codes from now on. Kaspersky’s QR code reader and scanner it is a free APP available in the Apple Store and the Google Play Store Links can also be found on the Kaspersky Website https://www.kaspersky.com.au/qr-scanner There are privacy laws relating to the use of the information and penalties for businesses if they misuse the information for marketing purposes etc. Privacy: Collecting and storing personal information during COVID-19 https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au//covid-/information-privacy

22.01.2022 Learn to Type for Free - links to free typing tutors below U3A Bundaberg Computer Club video meeting discussed speeding up your typing. We looked at both free and paid programs for learning to type (or to brush up your skills). We challenged the group to try and improve their typing during the 2 weeks between the meetings using one of the following for 30 minutes a day. 2 weeks can make a huge difference.... A free downloadable program that I have used and recommended is RAPID TYPING - https://rapidtyping.com/ A more advanced paid program is Mavis Beacon - http://www.mavisbeaconfree.com/ (I would start with a free program first) Davo recommended an excellent free online typing tutor called Typing Club which you can use on any computer when you have an internet connection. https://www.typingclub.com/ Every so often after 20 or so lessons it does offer you to use their paid service with a 3 day trial, you can just close the offer box and continue. So far this week I have completed 87 lessons which has covered all the letters on the keyboard. Create a free account so that it will remember where you are up to. Go on challenge yourself and have a go at https://www.typingclub.com/

20.01.2022 Below are links to some of the topics we covered at tonight’s meeting. We looked at using Sky Map app on a phone to identify objects in the night sky. How to identify Birds and Plants, The Council app they want people to use to report issues to the council called Snap, Send, Solve. We also did a demonstration of a software program for creating a slideshow from photos with music and effects then saving it as a video. The program is ASHAMPOO Slideshow HD 4 currently priced at ...about $23 AUD. It is an excellent program and can be used to make a video of or for special events or just sharing. Phone app Sky Map https://play.google.com/store/apps/details Isn't this a Google App? It was, but not any more. A team of engineers in Google's Pittsburgh office launched Google Sky Map in 2009. In 2012 we open sourced it and it ceased to be developed by Google. It's currently developed by the same engineers, but on a volunteer basis and not on behalf of Google. https://youtu.be/p6znyx0gjb4 2009 demo when it was first released another good site for star gazing is Star gazing http://www.stargazing.net/naa/sotw.htm Bird watching https://ebird.org/checklist/S59890627 Phone app Merlin https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org White-bellied Cuckooshrike Pacific Baza For plants I use an app called Plant Snap PlantSnap - Plants, Trees and Flowers Identifier https://play.google.com/store/apps/details Phone app Bundaberg Council Snap Send Solve app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details Ashampoo Slideshow Studio HD 4 https://www.ashampoo.com//multimedia/slideshow-studio-hd-4 Thank you to all who attended. Then right click the copy of the photo in windows file explorer and select Open with GIMP - Open the photo in GIMP - Select Image on menu then Canvas Size increase the height by approx 50 percent and select all layers and set background to white. - Select the text tool which is a capital A on the tool pallet and create a text box. make sure the text colour is set to Black if you cannot see text you may be typing white text on a white background as white is the default. - After entering text you can use the crop tool if you have too much white space below your text. - Save in GIMP format xcf for future editing of text. ‘ - Export as jpg for sharing - Done Cheers Damien

12.01.2022 A member who left town a while ago asked this week about keeping geckos out of her printer. This is my solution, it keeps dust and other insects out of my printers and shredder taking any food source away and discouraging geckos. With this system I have never had a gecko jam my printer and my paper and rollers stay cleaner. Do not cover the printer when it is turned on.
