25.01.2022 Don't forget to make your Emergency Animal Plan! Please see this SES resource for information on how to plan for your animal's safety in the case of an emergency. https://eur06.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/

23.01.2022 Leptospirosis update 14/08/2020 Attention dog owners! There has been another confirmed case of Leptospirosis this week in a dog that lives in Balmain. The d...og had been in contact with rats and was not vaccinated against Leptospirosis. The dog has been treated at UVTHS this week and fortunately appears to be recovering. Preliminary results show that the previously reported strain (serovar) known as Copenhageni has been the cause in both this dog and another reported dog from Newtown last week, however further testing is required to confirm this in one of the cases. This is the first case of Leptospirosis seen in Balmain. Last year we saw 8 cases between May and November and these dogs lived in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Glebe and Redfern. Importantly, we have not seen any infected dogs which have been vaccinated against Leptospirosis. Therefore, please vaccinate your dog against Leptospirosis if you live within a 5km radius of Surry Hills, in Balmain or its immediately surrounding suburbs or if your dog is in contact with rats. A vaccine has to be given twice 2-4 weeks apart and yearly thereafter to ensure protection. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause acute kidney failure and liver disease in dogs. Dogs become infected by contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Prevention of leptospirosis is achieved by limiting contact to sources of infection and vaccination. Until recently clinical leptospirosis has only rarely been reported in Sydney. Therefore, historically, dogs have not been routinely vaccinated against this disease. Clinical signs can initially be very vague such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Importantly, leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means that humans can become infected as well, for example through contact with rat urine or urine of infected dogs, through skin wounds or through the mucus membranes (eg in the mouth).

23.01.2022 After the fires and floods that occurred at the beginning of this year, we feel that it is important that we all try to be prepared as much as we can for the possibility that these emergency events may happen again. Please have a plan ready for your animals! The SES has prepared this great resource. 19.01.2022 Does anyone recognise this handsome boy? He has been living under a house in Penrose and was brought in so that we could check to see if he was microchipped. Unfortunately he does not have a chip and we therefore have no way of contacting his owners. He appears to be only a few years old but has obviously been in quite a few 'scuffs' with chronic injury to his right eye. Please let us know if you recognise him or know who may own him - he is a real sweetheart!

13.01.2022 Today we found a small copperhead behind the toilet. We have a fairly new home so it is reasonably sealed,so I actually thought my daughter was wrong when she c...alled out there was a snake inside. Anyway I called Ray the snake catcher and he was very prompt arriving within half an hour, he confirmed it was a juvenile copperhead and that it had found it's way inside either through a small crack under a door or in shoes or something brought in from outside. So please be extra careful as these snakes are venomous and we all assume safety within our homes. Thanks to Ray for his prompt response and generosity of his time. I now have his number in my contacts edit: Ray 0400 734 225 See more

01.01.2022 We are now experiencing lovely warmer weather, but unfortunately that also means that there are many snakes around! Snakes are everywhere but please be aware that on the walking/bike track in Moss Vale, there are a very large number to be found. Walking with your dog on a lead will greatly reduce the risk of snake bite.

01.01.2022 This is the very handsome Master George. He visited us today for a dental scale and polish and is quite possibly one of the very coolest cats around.
