13.01.2022 A big THANK YOU to Gavin Fancote and Aaron Lori who helped the Bungendore Park Environmental Group create rock borders for the planting areas in front of the Rammed earth entry statement to Bungendore Park.

13.01.2022 THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE EUROPEAN WASP SURVEILLANCE TEAM IN WA. European wasps have gone to ground now that the cold weather and rain has arrived. The se...ason has been productive and collaborative, with 166 nests detected and destroyed, nearly 3800 traps deployed, and close to 1000 public enquiries received. With 77 of these reports leading to the detection of nests, there is no doubt that your eagle eyes and reporting played a huge role in being able to find and destroy nests! We would like to thank the public, local government, community/environmental groups and other agencies for their much appreciated involvement in the program. While the 2019-20 season doesnt start up until October, it doesnt hurt to start looking again when the weather warms up in September/October. 09.01.2022 Bungendore Park Environmental Group received an email on 5/6/19 from the Supervisor & European wasp Activity Leader of the Pest and Disease Information Service. It reads: "I would like to take the opportunity to thank you on behalf of our European wasp team, and Department, for the surveillance work you and your group have put in to monitor Bungendore Park for the presence of European wasps. The maintenance of the trapping grid through Bungendore Park in the 2017/18 and 2018/...19 season has meant we can confidently confirm the successful eradication of the E.wasp population, detected in Bedfordale in 2016/17." Next year will be a particularly challenging year, considering the massive (3 times previous year numbers) increase in European wasp nests located in Martin and other sites further North. That is very close to us, so we must remain vigilant and report any sightings of European Wasps, direct to PaDIS on 9368 3080. If we are vigilant, we can beat this threat to our lifestyle and native fauna.

09.01.2022 Which bird is that??? The City of Armadale have organised a great workshop where you can learn how to identify local birds by their unique features and ...calls. You will also learn how you can attract native birds to your garden. Check out the flyer for booking details.

03.01.2022 After a couple of enquiries about a "reduced budget for feral animal control" in the City of Armadale, I asked the City's Environmental Officer, Corinne Omacini, if this was true. Here is her response: Thank you for your email regarding fox attacks and concerns regarding control of feral animals on City lands.... The City of Armadale has been undertaking targeted bi-annual feral animal control activities in both Armadale Settlers Common and Bungendore Park since 2016 with steadily increasing budget allocation since the project commencement. In 2017/18 the City spent approximately $25,000 on feral animal control. In 19/20 $45,000 has been allocated. Last year the City of Armadale undertook a Fauna study in both these reserves which involved trapping mark-release-recapture techniques of studying small mammals as well as motion camera monitoring. The results of this study provided valuable research not only regarding populations and movements of native animals in the areas, but also feral animals. By comparing the observed pig/ goat/ fox/ feral cat population data for each reserve in the fauna study to the successful control numbers achieved as part of each feral animal control event, City officers could recommend modifications to the feral animal control program to further improve its effectiveness. This included expansion and additional funding. Below is a link to the Council report that further describes the findings (starts page 21). https://www.armadale.wa.gov.au//minutes_-_technical_servic The recommendations of the report were endorsed by Council and the budget allocated this financial year. This springs fox control program will be soon be commencing. In terms of Bungendore Park, the City of Armadale has also commenced an Access Control Strategy with other government agencies and stakeholders. This project aims at reducing incidences of illegal off road driving in Bungendore Park and the Wungong Gorge. Another valuable part of this project is reducing the incidence of pigging activities and release of feral animal in the region for unauthorised hunting activities. With regards to feral animal control on private lands, the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development offers an advice service to residents experiencing problems with feral animals on their lands. Below is a link to their website. They can assist in identifying mechanisms for fox control on your property. https://dpird.wa.gov.au If you would like more information on the City of Armadales feral animal control program, please contact me on 9394 5415 on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. Alternatively you can email me. Kind regards, Senior Environmental Officer

01.01.2022 Winter Wildlife and Wildflowers at Bungendore Park As the cooler months set in many birds, reptiles and marsupials begin to pair up in preparation for the breeding season ahead. Winter wildflowers also come into bloom, providing splashes of colour among the regions national and regional parks. Heres what to be on the look-out (or hear-out) for while exploring the natural bushland of Bungendore Park. Before heading to the park, stop by the Perth Hills Armadale Visitor Centre... to collect one of our new (hot off the press) trail maps and flyers to help you identify wildflowers. The Quacking Frog, Bleating Froglet and Ticking Frog You may not be able to spot them, but you should be able to hear them! All three frogs make different sounds in order to attract a mate and are aptly named. The Quacking Frog makes a short but loud duck like quack, quack, quack. The Bleating Froglet makes a series of high pitched baa, baa, baa that sounds like the bleating of a sheep and the ticking frog you guessed it tick, tick, tick! Orchids Around 40 species of orchids have been recorded in Bungendore Park, while most come into bloom during springtime; there are several that begin to bloom as early as July. Look out for yellow and orange Cowslip Orchids, Pink Fairy Orchids and Bird Orchids. New Holland Honeyeaters These noisy, sociable birds can often be spotted flitting through the trees eating the nectar of flowers with their long, curved beak. In winter they make a cup-shaped nest out of bark and grasses in a bush or tree, favouring Dryandra thickets in Bungendore Park. Echidnas You can consider yourself very lucky if you spot an echidna as they are a shy and mostly solitary mammal. During summer they are completely nocturnal, sleeping during the heat of the day. They become more active during the cooler winter months and have been spotted moving about the park searching for food. If you are fortunate enough to spot wildlife along the trails, respect their boundaries and allow them time to pass without approaching them.

01.01.2022 We should get something like this for the Environment Centre
