21.01.2022 This shouldn’t be a surprise: feral cats visiting nest boxes. These boxes are used by Leadbeater's possum, an endangered species. Our friend & colleague Pia c...ommented the possum in the photo got away that night, but two cats that were subsequently captured had Leadbeater's remains in their stomachs (we don't know whether they were caught on the ground or at the boxes) http://www.publish.csiro.au/AM/AM18010. This research was lead by Uni Melb Masters student Leo McComb. See more

09.01.2022 My thanks to ABC RN for helping to raise awareness of the impact of invasive predators. We can love our pet cats but we need to love our wildlife too, and reduce the toll of cats on birds, lizards, insects and mammals
08.01.2022 If you spotted this little creature in your garden, would you know what it was? Kylie from Holbrook Landcare Network found this feathertail glider in her dog’s ...water bowl a few months ago, presumably drowned while drinking. These gorgeous native animals are named for their remarkable tail which is used to steer and brake as they glide through the trees. They’re so tiny they’re not picked up when spotlighting, so sadly people usually only know they’re around when cats bring them in. Feathertail gliders tend to live in communal groups of between 5 to 30 individuals, meaning there should be others on Kylie’s bush block. Lucky her! They’re found throughout eastern Australia from South Australia through to far north Queensland. See more

03.01.2022 Feral cats have a major impact on Victoria's biodiversity and are one of the most significant threats to the survival of the state's threatened wildlife. That's... why we're declaring the feral cat an established pest animal in Victoria. Unless feral cats are strategically managed on key public land, critically endangered iconic species like the Mountain Pygmy-possum, Helmeted Honeyeater, Orange-bellied Parrot and Plains Wanderer may be pushed into extinction in the wild. The declaration will only apply to particular areas of public land managed by DELWP and Parks Victoria. This will ensure we focus on areas where feral cat management is a high priority for the protection of biodiversity. Only staff and those acting on their behalf will be permitted to destroy a feral cat. For more information and to have your say, visit: www.environment.vic.gov.au/invasive-plants-and-a/feral-cats Submissions close 20 May.
