23.01.2022 It’s market time again! From 9.00am to 2.00pm this Sunday 30th August, come on up and browse the best of local crafts and produce. With plants, clothing, jewell...ery, honey, fresh produce, home-baked goods, soaps, candles, pens and a wide variety of craft items you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice! If you’re feeling a bit peckish, come and sample some of our local delicacies or hot drinks at Poppies on the Hill Café. While you’re here, enjoy the best of the winter weather by going for a bushwalk, spotting some native animals, feeding the birds or just sitting under a tree overlooking the rainforest and soaking up some sun while sipping a coffee. Don’t forget your picnic blanket! These are the last markets this winter, so don’t miss it! See you there. On a side note, if you make homemade goodies or grow products locally and would like to sell them at the Bunya Mountains Markets, we’d love to hear from you. 22.01.2022 We hear that the butterflies are out everywhere and not just here at the mountains. However we just had to share this video of our Beautiful Bunya Mountains Butterflies that maintenance took for us yesterday....thanks Archie. Hope they put a smile on your dial, like they have for us

22.01.2022 Five things you didn’t know about Bunya pines Bunya pines are actually conifers, not pine trees. They belong to the cone-bearing Araucariaceae family, which i...s now restricted to the certain places in the southern hemisphere. They were once distributed worldwide but became extinct in the northern hemisphere towards the end of the Cretaceous period. They are the giants of the rainforest, and can grow over 40 metres tall, with a diameter of 2 metres. In the rainforest, the first branch can occur over 20 metres from the ground (making them very hard to climb!). Today, you can sometimes see the hand and foot holes made by indigenous climbers in the trunks of older Bunya pines. Having survived the era of the dinosaurs, Bunya pines are now mountain-top refugees found between Gympie and the Bunya Mountains, with a small population in North Queensland. The Bunya Mountains National Park protects the largest stand of these prehistoric relics in the world today. The timber of the Bunya pine is ideal for use in the production of acoustic musical instruments. The common name bunya comes from the many forms of the name used by indigenous people, including bonye, bunyi or bunya-bunya. See more

21.01.2022 It's the little things, new kitchen taps and spout.

21.01.2022 Sadly as an non-essential business, all holiday lettings through the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre have been cancelled from 1 April to 30 June 2020. This is disappointing news to us and I'm sure to you. It is more important for us all to win the battle against COVID-19. 17.01.2022 The Bunya nuts are falling! It’s Bunya nut time! We love this time of year when the bunya nuts are falling. We regularly hear a large crashing sound followed b...y a thump, which heralds a bunya cone dropping and taking out branches as it falls (it’s prudent not to park your car under bunya pines from January to April). There are piles of empty shells everywhere, as the native birds and animals enjoy the feast (and our human visitors are also enjoying the delicious bunya nut produce too!). Bunya nut time is a great time of year to see wildlife, and indulge your tastebuds be sure not to miss this iconic time of year at the Bunya Mountains. #thisisqueensland

17.01.2022 Shiny new microwave at Wally Fiesta, I reckon the original was as old as the surrounding Bunya trees!!

16.01.2022 Some more nice feedback in our guest book :-)

16.01.2022 The chocolate wattle bats have returned from their winter retreat in the Muntapa Tunnel near Peranga. The Bunya Mountains is home to Australia’s largest colony ...of these intriguing bats, which are named for the milk-chocolate brown fur on their back and belly. Station yourself near the old timber schoolhouse where the bats live in the ceiling to see them flit out for their nightly adventures and to feed on insects. You might also see them at night roosting in hollow trees around the mountain, or soaring through the dusk air in free flight. #thisisqueensland

16.01.2022 More glorious rain. Now total is 75mm. Our mountain is transformed. Thank you

14.01.2022 Loving what the bushwalking trails have to offer on the mountain, allow yourself extra time to take it all in.

14.01.2022 The Scenic Circuit (2) is partially closed from July 3rd. The reason for the closure is so required maintenance on the walking track can occur. The section of the track that is closed is between Dandabah Day use area and Tim Shea Falls. Do not enter this construction zone. As a result of this track closure, the Barkers Creek Circuit is now approx. 12km circuit instead of a 10km circuit so please keep this in mind before commencing your walk. QPWS apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.

09.01.2022 More on Bunya Mountains

09.01.2022 When was the last time you got back to nature? Has it been too long since you spent some time in the great outdoors? Did you know that spending time in nature ...is one of the best ways to refresh, recharge and reconnect? Studies have shown that our stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces, and our feelings of happiness and serenity increase. As well, our attention levels will increase when we come in contact with the natural environment, and feelings of anger, fatigue and depression will decrease. That’s a lot of great benefits you can experience just by getting back to nature! And the best place to do this? The Bunya Mountains of course. You’ll be able to experience the calming influence of nature in abundance at the Bunyas, when you’ll surround yourself with cool green rainforests, majestic bunya pines, eucalypt forests, spectacular sunsets and amazing views of the stars. You can bushwalk, view the scenery from the lookouts or just stand quietly in the rainforest and experience the feeling of being one with nature. You won’t be able to help feeling refreshed and revitalised it’s all part of the unique experience of the Bunya Mountains.

02.01.2022 Travel tips for the Bunya Mountains #1 Don’t park or walk under Bunya pines from January to April Bunya nut season is a wonderful time to visit the Bunya Mou...ntains but it’s prudent to avoid parking your car under Bunya pine trees during January to April. The Bunya cones are pineapple shaped and can hold up to 80 nuts, and a large cone can weigh up to 8kg! A large crashing sound followed by a thump heralds a Bunya cone dropping and taking out branches as it falls. Although most cones fall at night, it’s better to be safe than sorry. To preserve your car, make sure you park well away from Bunya trees if you’re visiting during late summer and early autumn and be careful when walking or sitting underneath the Bunya pines as well.
