24.01.2022 Today is the United Nations International Day of Rural Women! Today we celebrate the vital role women play in rural industries and communities. In particular, w...e want to give a shout out to the amazing women producers who have participated in the #Farms2Schools program, educating the next generation about their food and fibre while working to keep Victoria going. Senior secondary school students and their teachers can take part in a special Farms2Schools virtual event on the 5th November to celebrate the achievements of local women in agriculture. Students will get the chance to meet women from across the region’s agricultural industry, representing primary production, government, industry associations, advocacy and STEM research, and ask them questions in a Q&A forum. Guests will include Gippsland Jersey co-founder Sallie Jones. If you know of a student or teacher that would like to attend, they can register at https://f2swomen.eventbrite.com.au #InternationalDayofRuralWomen #RWDCommunity #hatsofftoruralwomen #UnitedNations Main Ridge Dairy Little Rock Ranch Willowmavin Dry Creek Milling Co Sugarloaf Produce Gippslamb Velisha Farms Warratina Lavender Farm AUSVEG Jaclyn Symes Lisa Neville MP Agriculture Victoria DELWP PortPhillip Landcare Victoria

19.01.2022 CMAs and Landcare...a perfect match! CMAs Regional Landcare Coordinators work with over 600 Victorian Landcare groups to help them deliver amazing results for ...the environment. 88 of those groups are located in the Port Phillip and Western Port region! In 2018-19, Victorias CMAs and Landcare and community environmental groups delivered 473,000+ of on-ground volunteer hours, 65,000 hectares of weed control, 291km of fencing, 1000+ community events and 837,000 plants in the ground. 16.01.2022 Now is a great time to download the EchidnaCSI app. Its echidna breeding season - have you spotted an echidna train? Echidna breeding season has started! This will be the only time of the year (June-September) that you will see more than one echidna together out in the wild. Echidnas form these trains where one female is followed by multiple males until she chooses one to mate with - these trains can last for weeks at a time!... This echidna train was spotted last breeding season so keep your eyes peeled and submit photos to us if you are lucky enough to see one. Thanks to David Wilkinson for the photos, taken near Heathcote in Victoria.

16.01.2022 Heres a tasty fact: Last year, Victorias CMAs supported farmers to implement more sustainable practices across 6,200+ hectares of land. In the Port Phillip ...& Westernport CMA region, the Western Port Catchment Landcare Network Inc contributed to this by engaging 753 farmers, holding 36 farm discussions and walks, eight fields days attracting 589 farmers, running two GrazFert programs and establishing five on-farm demonstration sites. 15.01.2022 Cardinia Shire has a cat curfew - but what does that mean? The 24-hour cat curfew was introduced to Cardinia Shire in 2000, and means that cats must be confin...ed to their own property at all times. The curfew helps to: protect native wildlife reduce the feral cat population reduce the spread of disease decrease the number of cats that need to be put to sleep reduce the number of complaints about problem cats keep your cat safe. 14.01.2022 Australias islands are an important a safe haven for threatened species and are our greatest opportunity to prevent extinctions and offer a place for animals t...o recover in safety. But despite this, feral cats continue to be the single greatest threat to Australias native mammals and still remain at large on many islands. But things are looking promising for the threatened species on French Island after a recent round of feral cat cage trapping has yielded positive results. A network of over 50 wire mesh cage traps were deployed along roadsides and 19 feral cats were removed. A few native species also paid the cages a visit, including Long-nosed potoroos (pictured), water rats and Eastern-barred bandicoots (which Zoos Victoria recently introduced onto the island). All were safely released. The program is a partnership between PPWCMA and French Island Landcare and is funded through the National Landcare Program The project works with land managers and communities to reduce threats to the Western Port and Port Phillip Bay (western shoreline) wetlands, including French Island, which is one of five island havens identified in the Threatened Species Strategy, and builds on 10 years of government and community collaboration. #RamsarProtectionProgram #ThreatenedSpecies #CMAsGetItDone Threatened Species Commissioner

10.01.2022 Do you know what a Rakali is? Most people arent aware of the existence of the Rakali, a native Australian water rodent that looks a lot like a little otter. Of...ten called a water rat, people continually mistake them for pests and their ecological value goes unnoticed. In reality, they are one of only two amphibious australian mammals (the other being the platypus) and Rakali can be found in many of the regions waterways, including all across Melbourne! Today is Rakali Awareness Day, which wildlife carer, Cory Young, started four years ago to raise the profile of these wonderful species. Make the time to learn more about these awesome animals! They even have their own website - www.rakali.com.

02.01.2022 Common Heath (Epacris impressa) is flowering now! Flowering occurs from autumn through to spring and flowers range from white through various shades of pink t...o bright red. The deep pink form is the floral emblem of Victoria. Indigenous to Yarra Ranges, they usually appear as a small shrub of less than a metre in height, but they can reach 2-3 metres in some locations. The branches are stiff and have small leaves with a sharp point at the end. The flowers are narrow and tubular, about 20mm long and occur in clusters among the ends of the branches. They contain nectar and are a food source for honey-eating birds.
