09.01.2022 THE BIG ONES THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY In February 2019 Lilliesmere Lagoon in the Lower Burdekin was depleted of oxygen causing a fish kill. Among the dead were va...rious species of marine animals including large one-metre-plus barramundi. Burdekin Fish Restocking Association Secretary Alan Griggs has been in the business for over thirty years and felt proud of his communities’ efforts to rescue and relocate the affected fish. We had fifty people here helping us, we’ve picked up a heap of members, fish kills get reported now, we’ve got farmers onside and different land care groups looking after the edges of the water. You only got to look at it, it’s beautiful, he said. Since January 2020 OzFish Project Manager Dr. Geoffrey Collins has been collecting information across the Lower Burdekin with the help of local recreational fishers. The project aims to monitor water quality in tropical coastal wetlands and use the data to get a handle on how dissolved oxygen and temperature is changing over time and maybe look at ways we can better manage the system and stop this sort of thing from occurring again, he said. The project will run until June next year.
