25.01.2022 Due to the unseasonal rain event this week, we have decided to start shed meetings a few weeks earlier than anticipated. Shed meetings will start this coming Monday and continue for the next 2 weeks. SRA and Farmacist are presenting with BPS and topics being covered include: Understanding sugarcane crop physiology and how it impacts on productivity and profitability Water quality for spraying herbicides and how to improve weed control YCS update... SRA23 (new variety) data Managing paddock variability Potassium Soil health Ratoon Stunting Disease (RSD) Project updates Imidacloprid I encourage all growers to attend a shed meeting, particualrly because we will present some data that shows an increase in RSD levels around the district which will be impacting productivity. BPS are putting extra resrouces into managing this disease, however all growers need to play a part on thier own farms and we will be discussing management strategies to minimise impact on your farm. Dates are as follows, and if you cannot attend your regular meeting, feel free to attend another.

25.01.2022 The APVMA has recently announced changes to the 2,4-D label. These changes apply to all products that contain 2,4-D as one of the active ingredients (e.g. Amicide Advance 700, 2,4-D amine 625, Tordon 75-D, Zulu herbicide). Key changes that are now in place are: The inclusion of downwind buffer zones to aquatic and terrestrial areas.... In sugarcane these buffer zones do not apply as long as droppers e.g. Irvin legs are being used. They do apply to flat boom and aerial applications. Buffer zone distances vary depending on the product, crop, rate and method of application, and can range from 30 350 m. Boom height restrictions Boom heights are restricted to a maximum of 50 cm above the target surface. The target surface is either the crop canopy, average weed height or the top of stubble. Changes that do not come into effect until manufacturers update their labels OR October 1, 2021 (whichever comes first): Restrictions on what times of year that 2,4-D products can be used Changes to label rates Feel free to call a BPS staff member for assistance.

04.01.2022 Keep an eye out for all weeds at this time of year with the weather warming up, but particularly problem weeds like Itch Grass (pictured). These seedlings were found in one of our known hotspots and sprayed out. Talk to any BPS staff member for assistance with weed control.

04.01.2022 Lots of Hot Water Treatment of cane happening at the moment. Thanks to our hand cutters and staff assisting with logistics as we prepare for lots of planting coming up for approved seed cane. We still have most varieties available for those wanting to plant approved seed cane this year.

02.01.2022 BPS staff are starting to conduct RSD (Ratoon Stunting Disease) testing. Every year, we test every farm on the district to try and ensure we can alert growers if they have RSD on thier farm. Losses from RSD vary, but can be hard to visually identify, so juice sampling is the best way to test. Staff will let you know when we are coming onto your property. The short video shows how we collect samples.

01.01.2022 We have summarised the variety trials conducted in the last few years that compared WSRA17 and SRA23 with some of our current standard varieties. This data was presented and discussed at shed meetings, however if you missed them, download the booklet at the BPS website. Note that SRA23 can be purchased from approved seed cane plots next season. https://bps.net.au//2020/05/Variety-trial-summary_2017-201
