17.01.2022 AGM Sunday 15th September. Club grounds, 10am

16.01.2022 TEN HARD TRUTHS: I have written these down over the period of one decade. They’re from my two latest riding journals. This means that they may not be your truth...s but they are mine and I believe them with all my heart. While they are sometimes unpalatable, they are deserving of deeper thought. 1. GET CANTERING. Yes, even if you intend only to walk and trot. Even if your child is young and on ponies, even if your horse is green. Find a teacher or trainer and begin. I say this because too many accidents come about as neither the rider nor the horse is accustomed to loping or cantering, when the inevitable happens. What could have been a few ordinary strides, too often becomes a full-blown riding wreck. While very old or unsound horses mightn’t safely be able, it is worth learning, yourself, on a school horse who is able to sustain third gear. For safety's sake, get cantering! Besides, it's good for your horse. 2. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT. If your horseor your coachimplies that he or she is not to be trusted, please believe them. Do not let others browbeat you into trying once again, or allow your guilt, or the money invested, override all else. Most times when we’re finally hurt for good, we look back and realize our horseor the situationwas unsuitable all along. 3. BUY FROM SOMEONE WHO RIDES LIKE YOU DO. Don't buy the horse in a professional program, the horse who is ridden five days a week, if you ride only twice a month. Don't buy the horse ridden only in the arena if you are looking to ride the trails. It isn’t fair to you. It isn’t fair to the horse. 4. PRACTICE RIDING ONE-HANDED. Even if you don’t ride western, even if you don’t play polo. Give yourself and your horse a chance to learn how to steer and stop with the direct and indirect (neck) reins coming from the same hand. Give your horse a chance to learn how to turn, simply by following his nose. Being able to stop and steer one-handed, allowing you to either hang on or reach out to someone else in trouble, can save a life. On a related note, don’t be blind to trying different bits. Your horse will tell you which one he prefers... and it may not be the one you imagine. 5. DON’T JUMP AROUND. By this, I refer to teachers. When you find a teacher whose moral compass seems aligned with your own, stay in a regular program for as many years as you can afford AND for as long as you continue to learn. If neither of these factors is present, then stop and shop around. Don’t go to multiple teachers at the same time, when human nature us turning from one to the other... especially after being told something that we don't like. There are many paths to excellence. Having too wide a choice will only muddy the waters. 6. HONOUR THE RULE OF FIFTY-FIFTY. Ride your arena horse out on the trails. Ride your ranch or trail horse as though you are schooling him. Anything less is utilizing only fifty percent of your horse! While teaching the indoors horse to be brave and relaxed out in the real world can be daunting, if you do so, his mind and body will thank you. While teaching the outdoors worker to soften up, have cruise control, power brakes and steering can also be daunting, if you do so, his mind and body will thank you. Both horses, so ridden, may well live longer, happier lives. 7. A HORSE WILL GO TO THE LEVEL HE IS RIDDEN. If you are not as experienced and knowledgeable as your good horse, he will start to ‘come undone’ unless one of two things happens. You can either have him ridden regularly (maintained) by a more experienced rider while you are learning, yourself or you can aspire to getting yourself trained up as quickly and earnestly as possible to be worthy of him. People are surprised when their good horses start making poor decisions, not realizing that any horse will simply go as highor lowas the bar is set. 8. NOT ALL HORSES CAN BE SAVED. Whether through profound mental or physical unwellness, including advanced old age, such horses are promised kindness, good feed, turn out, medical, dental and farrier care for life or they are humanely put down. Such horses do not go back on the market. 9. THERE ARE MANY ROADS TO ROME. No one discipline, no one method, is the only way. The minute we start using the words ‘always’ and ‘never’, we are forgetting. The minute we start worshipping one equestrian god or demeaning other methods of handling horses, we are forgetting. Like the far-reaching branches of a tree, all horsemanship has shared roots, whether or not they are visible to us. 10. PRACTICE. Get out there and do. Try. Allow the horse to make mistakes. Correct in fairness. Reward with generosity. Learn. Feel. Theorize. Ask questions. Try again. Raise a sweat. Putz around. Don’t ride like you are being judged. Ride like you can’t bear not to.

16.01.2022 This is what clinics are all about, from being so anxious yesterday, she didn’t even bring her horse, to cantering like a boss within 2 hours today !

08.01.2022 John Wicks people, final payments due by MONDAY !!

08.01.2022 Meet the Pro - John Wicks Biddaddaba Valley, SE Queensland Team Wicks John Wicks has been involved with Reining for 25 years and has a wealth of experience bo...th training horses and teaching people. John has an impressive record of delivering successful Futurity, Derby and Open champions as well as many highly competitive show horses for his non-pro clients. John travels throughout Australia teaching Reining & Horsemanship clinics. John lives in beautiful Biddaddaba, Gold Coast Hinterland QLD with his wife Angie. Why do you love Reining? I love the challenge of the training process. I really enjoy teaching young horses all the basics and then seeing how solid I can take their foundation to an advanced level show horse through implementing a solid training program over many years, bringing out the best in each horse. I also love show casing years of training in the arena, this can be highly satisfying (and on some occasions highly reflective). Also sharing this with my family and clients over the years is very fulfilling. Favourite Manuever? It would have to be the stop. Though it’s not really the manoeuvre itself that’s my favourite, it’s the feeling I get when training the stop and what some horse’s bring to the stop. The stop is the one maneuver I can really feel a horse’s natural desire to please and how big their heart is. Current Horses? We have a handful of really well-bred 2 year olds that are showing a lot of promise for their futurity years. We have four really nice futurity horses that were ready to be shown this year but will now have their futurity in 2021 and I also have a few Derby horses to show when the shows start back up. What do you bring to RTA Clinics? I am patient and calm with everyone I teach and I can adjust to all levels of participants. I really enjoy teaching people the training process to bring out the best in their horses. Giving back to the sport... Our business sponsors most of the big shows every year. My family, clients and our business have also contributed to breeding, training and producing dozens of quality horses that are still an integral part of the industry today. Consistently producing competitive Open horses that go on to become competitive non-pro horses and eventually excellent youth prospects is what I strive to give back to Reining. Outside of Reining? That doesn’t leave much time but I enjoy exercising most nights in our gym and working around the property. I am currently looking for trial bikes for Angie and I to play around with obstacles on the property. 04.01.2022 Horse peeps - if you are interested/planning on attending our fantastic Rachel Longworth Clinic at Woodstock, I need to hear from you !! Would hate to have to cancel due to lack of participant. Where else can you get 2 days of full instruction for only $250, that equates to 12 hrs of lessons !! Limited numbers and none of that half ride/half watch BS, you get full 2 days of ridden instruction!!

04.01.2022 Meet the Pro Angie Wicks Biddaddaba Valley, SE Queensland. Team Wicks Angie Wicks is an integral part of Team Wicks, she began riding at an early age and ha...s comprehensive knowledge of young horse handling, problem solving, understanding horse behaviour, breaking in under saddle and liberty training. Angie currently competes in Reining but has also trained and competed at FEI level in Dressage. Angie travels throughout Australia teaching Horsemanship, Reining, Western Dressage and Ground Work clinics. Angie is located in the beautiful Biddaddaba Valley, Gold Coast Hinterland QLD where her and her husband John run their horse training business. Why do you love Reining? Reining is such a challenge. For me Reining is a never-ending journey of learning and reflection. I also love the mental connection that you can create with your horse to be able to do such advanced physical maneuvers off minimal communication cues. Favourite Manuever? It would have to be the spin. I love the teaching process of the spin with young horses. It’s such a technical maneuver with getting all the elements to come together. Then trying to refine the cues to get a show spin to where the horse does it with the slightest suggestions. Current Horses? At the start of the year I showed two really nice futurity horses, one by Einsteins Revolution and another by Lil Nu It All but they will be for 2021 futurity now. I also have my palomino Whiz a Roy to Derby when the shows start back up. What do you bring to RTA Clinics? My passion and enthusiasm. My background as a school teacher has given me an understanding of how different people learn. I believe my teaching skills help me to break down all the techniques, training exercises and manoeuvres into a step by step system. I also love helping people to establish a better partnership and more mental connection with their horses. Giving back to the sport... Team Wicks sponsors most of the big shows every year. I got my NRHA judges ticket at the end of last year and I am really looking forward to judging some shows in the future. I also believe strongly that the job of a Reining trainer is a big part of the future of Reining. When all the trainers partner with clients and they send horses for long-term training, these horses tend to then stay in the industry and get passed down through many families to enjoy for years to come. Outside of Reining? When I’m not riding or working in the business you will find me in the vegie garden or the gym. I also love reading but don’t get time to read many books anymore so I love listening to Audiobooks and it’s not uncommon for me to have many books on the go at once. I churn through at least one a week, I think it’s an addiction now! So when you see me with headphones on at a show you’ll know what I’m up to. I’m always on the lookout for new books; so any suggestions send me a PM ;-) We also love taking our dog Peekay to the beach and catching up with friends when we can, though this doesn’t happen enough. Since COVID-19 we have discovered the beauty in a little downtime and would love to learn to prioritise this more in the future. Checkout Team Wicks and give them a like #SupportOurReiningTrainers https://www.facebook.com/Team-Wicks-197445426965642/
