07.01.2022 Hi, I worked on the John Burke and Sid McGrath in the 80s as a boilermaker, refurbishing the JB when she was in port. We replaced a lot of rusty parts, bent han...drails, engine bulkheads, fan systems and hatch covers. I crawled around that ship from top to bottom painting, chipping welding up deck holes and loved every minute of it. She had soul and a beating heart of a true coastal carrier. The SM was a different ship, always busy, always active and a very strict senior crew. We spent time on that ship doing repairs and dockside maintenance such as cutting the eyebrows off over the portholes, slung over the side on a bosuns chair. Problem was, when the crane slung another container off the deck onto the wharf the ship would tilt, and you were stuck against the hull until it righted itself, and sometime you swung out and slammed back into the hull until it settled. I moved on to Melbourne shortly after Dillinghams took over but loved the time at the wharf, the workshop in Northgate, and on the ships. See more

05.01.2022 I do have some more information from people that have worked on the ships I just need to post themI do have some more information from people that have worked on the ships I just need to post them

04.01.2022 Happy Australia Day to all the Burkes... history we should all be proud of

02.01.2022 Therese Burke posted- Just watched Ch 7 Flashback and they were talking about the spanish flu back in the early 1900's. They mentioned about John Burke dying and buried at Toowong cemetery.l Just wondering if any of the cousins knew about this as i don't recall ever being told that. I do know a lot about the Burke history but don't recall this.
