Parents need to make reasonable attempts to follow Family Court orders during coronavirus disruptions and Chief Justice William Alstergren said there would be ramifications. "There will be ramifications for people who don't act reasonably, so it's not a situation if I may say, where people should simply use this as an excuse not to obey court orders where there's no reasonable excuse not to do so," ...Justice Alstergren told ABC's Radio National on Monday. He said parents were required to obey court orders wherever safe to do so, noting they have been made with the best interests of the child in mind. If a parent can't follow the orders - for example, if a contact centre has closed - Justice Alstergren said parents must act reasonably to find an alternative agreement. They could come to a temporary co-parenting agreement together, through a mediator or lawyer, or through the courts electronically. "We take those obligations, our essential services, very very seriously and we're ensuring we can do everything we can to help Australian families, particularly those in conflict," Justice Alstergren said. In rare cases where it is not possible to share custody during the slowdown, he said parents must do everything in their power to provide alternative access through means like social media, video conferencing or the telephone.
