11.01.2022 Coaches Corner #19 - Return to Training We’re back and lifting! Now what? For some, getting back into a routine of training is a daunting task and for others nothing has changed (apart from lifting with other real life humans). With all that has taken place and still going on, motivation has possibly been our biggest limiting factor. Most, if not all of us have had access to some equipment and our living rooms, kitchens and garages have been transformed into makeshift gyms an...d places of sanctuary. Physically we’re semi-ok. Mentally not-so-ok. And that’s just fine, you’re not alone. Weightlifters are creatures of habit and need a goal, direction, competition, target to fulfill our hard work and efforts. As restrictions have been steadily lifted we can see light at the end of the tunnel. Its up to us to be sensible human beings and implement basic hygienic practices that we should be doing daily so as not to be forced into shutdown again. We’ve got this team! As we all jump back into training here’s a few things to be mindful of. GO EASY. (Physically and mentally on yourselves). Don’t jump back in to 85%+ and think Naaaah I’ll be right. Your body temple will crumble to ruins. Focus on the movement and technique. Your balance and strength will return. Try not to compare your current condition to where you were or where you should be. Past is past and future hasn’t happened. Concentrate on the now. What are you doing in this moment that will help build a better you. Is it shoulder stability that you’ve been meaning to work on. Has your squat technique been holding you back? Now that we are together again, we have the perfect opportunity to groove those patterns and build brick by brick. Set the ego aside and work on becoming a better athlete. I’m a big fan of variation programming whereby you have the option to stay at a certain percentage or move up through the sets. In fact, half my athletes are on a program like that. This, however does rely on the athletes’ auto regulation being finely tuned and a keen eye from the coach that can see how they are moving daily. The simplest way to think about it goes as follows. If you’re feeling beat up, tired, slept bad, have had a stressful day = stay light through the sets. If you’re feeling rested, movement and body feels great, weights feel light = go up! As long as you don’t get carried away. Take it lift by lift, session by session, day by day and week by week. Rest when needed. I love this quote - If you don’t take a rest week, your body will do it for you. The program is the base ingredient. Without a solid plan you’re floundering around in the dark. On top of that you sprinkle the other ingredients like athlete/coach relationship, recovery, mobility, nutrition, dealing with external stressors to name a few and together you’ve got the perfect meal!
