We have decided as a way of honouring mob all throughout Australia we are going to do a fortnightly yarn, featuring some of our proud ...Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people. I am going to use the first yarn as a way of introducing myself. My name is Natalie and I am the Director of Boots for one & all community. We are a local Gold Coast charity that ship pre-loved football boots as well as sanitary items/toiletries amongst other necessities to remote indigenous communities. I was born in Wooloomaloo in Sydney NSW. I am a die-hard Rabbitohs supporter Mum of four and small business manager. I grew up in a housing commission and although there were many hardships in our families life we still knew what was important and that was family and friends. The connections we made in the community gave us bonds that will last a lifetime. My mother was a beautiful human who passed over 20 years ago now but taught us many solid values that have kept us humble throughout our lives. She was a mixture of hard and soft, rough and staunch and she found love and friendships the easiest thing in the world. Throughout our lives learning and living with her empathy and heart we learnt that no matter your colour, your job, your sexual orientation no matter who you were there was always a welcome into our hearts home and family. We grew up with lots of kids and people in our home and little money, we knew what it felt like to go without. The struggle continued as I became a young mum and had my first child at the age of 16 to a proud Wiradjuri boy who is now a proud Wiradjuri man. We have spent the last 24 years building our family and our lives. We are not sure if we always get it right but we aim to be good parents and providers, coaches, mentors and give back what we can in whatever way we can. To teach our children the values that will carry through to the next generation. We have four beautiful children who all love and honour their Heritage and we are so proud to be on this journey together. My kids all have a passion for sport and we do as a family being involved in our local rugby league club for several years. I was watching my kids grow out of boots after just a few wears and not even getting through a season and it was hard especially with the expense. We didn’t want to watch them go to waste. I was watching groups and clubs hold collections for boots to take overseas and that got me thinking too. I mean it’s fantastic that Australia is fortunate enough to be able to send pre-loved football boots to other parts of the world .. but....there are so many communities within our own country that are so remote and have limited access to the very things we are sending afar. So that’s where we started. After several phone calls, we were given a name of a legend of a man called Robert Hince who was so welcoming to our idea and he put us on the path that led to our first shipment out to Groote Eylandt. From memory, I think we sent 3 small boxes in the first year, and almost four years later and we have sent pallet loads over. Over 1000 pairs of boots have gone into the community as well as clothing toiletries and sanitary items. We are grateful for our volunteers and for the people who donate and allow us to do what we do ... We couldn’t do any of it without you all. We have great partners in sponsorship from storage to shipping and more. Our hearts are full. We want to keep pushing! Keep growing! Keep communities playing the sports they love.
