18.01.2022 Ma Sabai’s story (2 of 5) Sharing a tiny 15 square metre home with no private rooms meant Ma Sabai had limited privacy. This was compounded by taboos about using shared household water and soap, which meant that she was using cloths without washing and changing them enough. Ma Sabai, a 14-year old girl living in Myanmar, has agreed to share her personal experience struggling with menstruation, and how Burnet’s Adolescent Health Program in Myanmar changed her life.... 16.01.2022 As Melbourne celebrates its first steps into freedom after a long time in lockdown, we have to remember to stay safe. For all of Australia, the lesson from Europe right now is that we are just one bad decision, one slice of bad luck, away from a new #COVID19 bushfire. Burnet's Professor Mike Toole explored the reasons we need to remain careful in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald today.... https://www.burnet.edu.au//1319_covid_19_gap_widens_betwee

But in Myanmar, girls like Ma Sabai are faced with shame, stigma, and taboo not to mention a lack of access to period products and sanitation facilities, particularly in school. These obstacles are having a profound impact on girls’ education, their health and their wellbeing. 14.01.2022 Such a fabulous Australian candidate for the United Nations' Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women 2021-24 (CEDAW) - Natasha Stott Despoja. A former Burnet Institute board member and lifelong advocate for gender equality, Natasha has always been a champion of women and girls globally. During her time on our Board, she supported so many of our projects with vulnerable communities, especially those that affected women and girls in Papua New Guinea, Myanmar and Australia.

10.01.2022 Ma Sabai’s story (4 of 5) Burnet’s menstrual hygiene program in Myanmar helped with training and aids to teachers to improve sexual reproductive health lessons in the classroom, and provided private changing rooms and waste bins. We also gave each girl who needed it, including Ma Sabai, a menstrual hygiene kit, which contained pads and other necessary items, with instructions.
