14.01.2022 Seniors There is always the beauty of an old horse. Outsiders see the horse that is. Insiders see the horse that was. The way they looked after their rider in the days gone past. The way they performed. The results they achieved. The satisfaction and reward they gave their human counterparts around them. It is these memories which keep us committed to looking after these senior members of the equine population. We have been receiving calls regarding looking after some of ...these favourites which seem to be doing it tougher in these colder periods. Unfortunately the general drop off in winter feed quality coincides with their increased nutritional requirements. These guys have a few things working against them : The feed quality drops. Their energy demand increases. Their joints become a little stiff. It is a time where their digestive inefficiencies start to show. It’s this time of year that they need us most. It is surprising how much the energy requirements of these older guys is reduced when they are rugged. A good fitting rug for them is equal to two extra blankets for us at night. Just as two extra blankets for us take it off through the day. Overheating through the day is just as detrimental. With fat being the body’s natural insulator, the less fat, the bigger the difference a rug will make. Supplementing these senior members with a meal or high digestible feed is a good move. While the cost per kg of feed might initially be alarming, compare the cost per day. It is surprising the variation in cost per day between different feedstuffs. Lastly These older members need to be able to mechanically breakdown their food. If they are not efficient, then a lot of the energy value of the food will be wasted onto the ground. Wasted along with that is your financial efforts. As such their teeth are worth an evaluation. As horses teeth are continually growing, it is important for regular dental evaluation and maintenance. Through their middle years there is the tendency to extend the periods between dental check-ups. These senior year are times where it is important to evaluate their chewing efficiency regularly yearly is good. A senior can develop a painful mouth from sharp edges cutting gums, a loose tooth or damaged teeth. They can have problems chewing efficiently because the teeth don’t actually come together properly in different sections of the arcade. All of these issues can be addressed to give a better, healthier more efficient outcome. It is important to bear in mind that it is impossible to tell the health of a horse’s mouth without looking at what is going on inside. A horse’s determination to eat is often much greater than the discomfort of hunger. If you have any queries regarding the above information, please don’t hesitate to call me. Cheers Rob

03.01.2022 New Hendra Virus Test In Development The project, being led by Associate Professor Ben Ahern, will have the ability to obtain results for the Hendra Virus st...atus of a horse 30 to 40 minutes post-sample collection in comparison with current testing which takes hours or days for results to be issued. The new test is set to reduce both human exposure to infected animals and horse losses due to delays in treatment. The project has been made possible thanks to the contribution of supporters through Agrifutures. For more details about the test and contributors click the link: https://bit.ly/3aiSHgG
