20.01.2022 Now that the post Grand Final antics have died down, it's a good time to reflect on the season we've had. It may have been shorter in terms of rounds, but it's been a long year. We started in early January and had almost done a full pre-season before COVID-19 brought things to a halt. At one point we didn't know whether we'd have a season at all, but fortunately the Tasmanian rugby community made it happen. The break turned out to be a good thing for our club with our number...s in men's and women's being better than ever. Numbers for the women were good enough at the start of the season for us to have 2 teams in the early rounds. As injuries hit we had to go back to one team that eventually finished in third. On their day the women were capable of beating any team in the comp and finished on a high by beating their northern rivals in the battle for third spot. Two years ago the Emus men not only couldn't win a game, we could hardly put a team on the paddock. Several times the team went to Hobart with the already having forfeit before we left. At that point I think most of just wanted to keep the club alive. Getting 15 on the field just wasn't happening and playing in a Grand Final was not even on the radar. This year we had at least 15 and often with a few subs for every game and numbers at training were consistently in double figures for the first time since I joined the club. To make it to a grand final with a full squad of 23 was already a win for the club. We may not have won any silverware this year, but I am as proud as I have ever been about the efforts of our men's and women's teams this year. We've had a great mix of new and returning players as well as some who have come back to the club and it has been a fantastic year! On behalf of the club I would like to thank our sponsors Graham Woodhouse Conveyancing, MMG, Burnie Print n Design, Leonie Hiscutt, Roger Jaensch, Anita Dow, Ruth Forrest, NWS Hi Fi, The Chapel and Darts Day Care. Thank you to our coaches Brett Bentley and Brett Kershaw and fellow committee members Isabella Hardy, Brendan Griffiths, Claire Whiteway, Alice Weldon, Brad Van der Drift, Gerry Horch, Jess Flint, Ro Allen- Kingdon, Paul Smith, Vanessa Davies, Lynne Kershaw and Brett Gluyas. Thanks also to Geoff Dyke for his work behind the bar and Will Kershaw and Donna Scott for their assistance with juniors. Lastly, to all the volunteers, spectators, families and friends and anyone else that has supported the club this season, thank you all! Pat Fahy, President Burnie Rugby Club HOW 'BOUT THOSE EMUS!

10.01.2022 2021 Coaching Announcement: The Burnie Emus are pleased to announce the appointment of a couple of familiar faces as our senior coaches for 2021. Following a rigorous recruitment process we will have Brett "Crusty" Kershaw once again taking on the role of women's coach, while Brett Bentley will return as men's coach. The two Brett's both did a great job coaching in 2020 and we're delighted to have them back on board for another season. How 'bout those Emus!

09.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will... remember them. Lest we forget.

08.01.2022 BRUC Presentation Night On Saturday night the Emus had their annual dinner and presentation night at the Menai Hotel. Award winners were as follows: Junior award: Anamanu Vaka... Women's awards Best new recruit: Jessie Mirhigh Best tackler- Virginia Tuipulotu Most improved- Loisi Vaka Coaches Award- Zoe Ferguson Runner-up best and fairest- Claire Whiteway Best and Fairest- Virginia Tuipulotu Men's awards Best new recruit- Gareth Jubb Best tackler- Will Kershaw Most consistent forward- Brad Van der Drift Most consistent back- Alif Suhirman Most inspirational- Shane Bentley Coaches Award- Brad Van der Drift Most improved- Jason Carey Big Pig- Alex McKenzie Runner-up best and fairest- Brendan Griffiths Best and Fairest- Michael Grace The clubman of the year award was shared between our power couple Brad Van der Drift and Alice Weldon. Brad is the go to man when you want to get things done and is always working hard behind the scenes as well as leading his team on the field. Alice may not be a rugby player, but she is always working hard behind the scenes keeping on top of finances, working in the kitchen and organising events. Great as individuals but even stronger as a duo, it's fitting that they can share this award together. We also welcomed two new members to the life members club in Graham 'Woody' Woodhouse and Ashley 'Ziff' Arnold. Woody is a past player and long time sponsor with Graham Woodhouse Conveyancing who has been responsible for many of the Emus kits over the years. Ziff has played and coached the seniors and juniors and continues to be a regular at training where he's always lending a hand and offering some sage advice. Very well deserved for both men. Congratulations to all our award winners and to those that cane along and helped make it a great night. Thanks again to our sponsors and supporters, players and volunteers for making this a great season. We're looking forward to another big season in 2021 in what will be the 60th year for the club. How 'bout those Emus!
