24.01.2022 via @cradle coast nrm. While our borders have been closed a couple of well-camouflaged international travellers have slipped into our state The Latham’s Snipe is a migratory shorebird who breeds in Japan and flies all the way to Tasmania every year to feed in our wetlands and shallow coastal areas. The coastal saltmarsh wetlands along the Duck River and throughout Boullanger Bay are nationally important Latham’s Snipe habitat. These birds will spend the summer feeding with... their long bills in the soft mudflats and shallow water, fuelling up before they fly north in the autumn, back to Japan to breed. The Cradle Coast Authority and the Circular Head Landcare Group are currently undertaking a project to protect and enhance this important coastal saltmarsh habitat in the Cradle Coast region. Check out the details of the project here: https://www.cradlecoast.com/coastal-saltmarsh-recovery-in-/ Today is World Migratory Bird Day, a day to raise awareness of and celebrate all the amazing migratory birds and highlight the ecological importance of maintaining their vital breeding and feeding habitat. Check out the video below about the journey of the migratory Great Knot, who travels from Australia to Siberia and back again every year. To learn more about the migratory birds which travel to our shores follow the The Overwintering Project and keep your eye out for the upcoming exhibition at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery December 18th 2020 - 6th of February 2021 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMKP8Zvvy0U&feature=youtu.be Circular Head Council #WMBD2020

21.01.2022 With only 20 days left before the final TPP exhibition begins (30 October) at Burnie Regional Art Gallery, we take a look back at the artworks that have been ex...hibited throughout this tour, starting with artists from regional Tasmania: Greg Leong The Tasmanian Migration of Oriental Carp 2018 Read Greg's story at: https://www.thepartnershippingproject.net.au/gregleong-story Greg Leong often uses cross-cultural symbolism to investigate the complexities of his identity as a Chinese Australian working in forms that traverse installation, sculpture and performance. His installation The Tasmanian Migration of Oriental Carp uses a ‘pest’ species in Australian waterways to refer to Australia’s rejection of people from non-Anglo-Saxon countries. Greg writes, My boat in Partnershipping is the boat that symbolically brings new peoples here. My installation can be read simply as a ghost ship, referencing the many paper effigies of worldly goods the Chinese living burn during ghost festivals and so keep their relatives in the nether world in comfort and well-heeled. To the Chinese the carp (or koi) is a symbol of love, courage and wealth. However my carp skeletons, wrapped in joss paper (gold and silver for the dead) tell a sadder story of migration and the search for asylum, and perhaps the references are to pitiless governments, drownings at sea and off shore incarceration. Carp frames and installation method designed and completed by Mark Hoban, David Hamilton, Terry Ryan and the artist. Thanks also Michael Essex.

17.01.2022 Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said This exhibition has had an extraordinary journey traveling in a shipping container on the east coast of Australia to South Australia and back to Tasmania. During the last two years it has experienced floods (Townsville), bush fires (Lismore) and closure due to COVID-19 (Mt Gambier) not to mention border closures. Despite the challenges, the exhibition has arrived home to Burnie. Curated by Professor Pat Hoffie and Rosemary Miller, ...the artists were asked to respond to the question: as on-line experiences take up more time in our lives, do our relationships to place still matter? Oddly, this question has become even more important as our country faces the enormous challenges of the pandemic. Said Mayor Kons. The Partnershipping Project on display until 12 December 2020 The Gallery is open free to the public from 10 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday and Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. Visitors will be asked to sign in on entry for contact tracing and to comply with local, state and commonwealth regulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Burnie Regional Art Gallery is an initiative of Burnie City Council and is assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts.

16.01.2022 Just two weeks until The Partnershipping Project exhibition sails back into the Gallery. "The Partnershipping Project is a project based around an exhibition of art that travels to 4 regional gallery destinations. The works are made by 20 regionally based artists, each of whom has created work in response to the question: ‘does place matter?’ The Partnershipping Project aims to explore the extent to which the places where we live, and the communities with whom we share our l...ives, and who affect who we are. In the past, place, along with friends, family and traditions, provided the strongest grounds for building a sense of belonging. This exhibition questions the extent to which this might have changed - or not." The Partnershipping Project 30 October to 12 December

06.01.2022 The Partnershipping Project touring schedule started at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery, Tasmania. The exhibition was first on display from 10 November to 16 December 2018. "Do you think place still mattersor do you just think that the importance of place has been dissolved by social media, international marketing and the onslaught of the multi-national conglomerates (Facebook; Apple; Amazon; Netflix; Google etc.)? Ritchie - Especially in Tasmania place is very important... to people right now, while I can say that I can build my own sense of contentment wherever I go, I love the people here I have a strong connection with the people through my art. I am not on social media, but I’m aware that it can break people-to-people connection in a way that disconnects them from place. I can say from my own experiences that when I work most closely with communities in developing my art projects that’s when I build the strongest sense of and connection to place. " Image : Ritchie Ares DONA, 'Cultural Transmission', 2018 Read more about Ritchie on The Partnershipping website https://www.thepartnershippingproject.net.au/ritchiearesdon The final leg of the exhibition is currently on display at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery 30 October to 12 December 2020.
