25.01.2022 Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said The Burnie Regional Museum holds an amazing collection of photographs marking the Japanese surrender in New Guinea, taken by the late A.J. (Bert) Winter on 13 September 1945. These photographs were donated by Berts son, Colin Winter, in 2013 and are a significant historical record of Australias involvement in New Guinea during WWII. Burnie Regional Museum volunteer, Julie Harris, has catalogued this collection and was inspired t...o go to New Guinea and visit the site of the surrender at Wewak. Council kindly invite the media to make use of its collection to help tell the stories as the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII approaches.

24.01.2022 "Bert Winters images of the Japanese surrender in what is now Papua New Guinea at the end of World War II capture forever a moment of high emotion and gravity. His photographs even inspired Julie Harris, a volunteer from Burnie Regional Museum in Tasmania, to make a pilgrimage to the lonely airstrip where the surrender occurred after she recently catalogued the images."

19.01.2022 How many butter pats does a museum need? The topic of deaccessioning is a sensitive one - but also an important one that every responsible museum must face. We have limited resources and space and we must make decisions that are in the best interest of the collection as a whole, to ensure that we have the space and resources to care for those objects of significance to the North-West community. #discoverburnie #burnieregionalmuseum

15.01.2022 Wacky Wednesday! We are fortunate enough to have several Antikamnia pictures displayed in the Dental Surgery of Federation Street. Please find some interesting information below on these quirky images!... Antikamnia Chemical Company (1890-1930) was named after its patent medicine Antikamnia, an American pharmaceutical company based in St Louis, Missouri. The company manufactured supposed cures for pains with the main ingredient being acetanilide, which was known to be toxic in high doses or in sensitive individuals. They produced a range of products with mixtures of therapeutic chemicals including both quinine and heroin. Unlike quack cures of the time, they contained potent chemicals but these were not carefully tested and were considered as nostrums by many physicians of the time. The company however made huge profits through clever advertising and marketing of the product targeting physicians, using physician testimonials and finding loopholes in the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. #discoverburnie #burnieregionalmuseum #FederationStreetFinds

14.01.2022 This fellow (a Kyloe or Highland cattle head) will be remaining off display for conservation treatment. The breed was introduced by the VDL Co from Scotland in 1837 to tolerate the harsh conditions experienced at their Surrey and Hampshire Hills blocks. Until early last century large herds roamed in the area. When better beef breeds like Angus appeared, the highland breeds died out. This mounted head hung in the VDL companys office at South Burnie for at least 50 years.

With their armies retreating and close to collapse, Germa...n leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. 10.01.2022 The wonderful world of dentistry from the Burnie Regional Museum Collections Officer. As a child I remember being weirdly fascinated by my grandmother’s false teeth sitting in a jar of water beside the bed and wondering where did they get those the teeth from? The earliest dentures were made from human or animal teeth and the practice of using recycled teeth was still used up into the nineteenth century. ... The term ‘Waterloo teeth’ was created due to the gruesome practice of extracting the teeth from dead soldiers on the battlefield of Waterloo and shipping them back to England to be attached into denture bases. https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33085031 Luckily for my grandmother, her dentures were not made from recycled human teeth. Today we can be thankful for the improvements in modern dentistry and denture manufacture. For further information on ‘Waterloo teeth’ see the article ‘The dentures made from the teeth of dead soldiers at Waterloo’, BBC Magazine 16 June 2015 Image : The objects in the photograph include a set of dentures showing diatoric teeth made from porcelain. The tray of diatoric teeth have tiny holes and a recess in the back where they can be attached to a dental plate. The inlay model wax comes in sticks and was used to prepare patterns or casts for crowns, inlays, partial or full dentures. The wax was softened by submerging in warm water or applying dry heat before carving or moulding to the appropriate into shape. Please note - The Burnie Regional Museum is temporarily closed as staff are working behind-the-scenes to complete important cleaning, conservation and collection management projects.

06.01.2022 With Burnie currently at the epicentre of the outbreak in Tasmania, the Council has moved to close non-essential public services which normally involve working in the community, for the period 15 26 April inclusive, to be reviewed and extended or modified as needed. The move will see non-essential services in the community be reduced or temporarily ceased. The Mayor stated While it has been a difficult decision, with the recent escalation of events, we are in no doubt tha...t this is the right thing to do in the interests of both our workforce, and the health of the community we serve, to undertake these temporary measures. The measures include closure of the City Offices to face to face meetings and enquiries, further transition of essential services to work from home where relevant and the temporary stand down of a number of employees. 05.01.2022 A great reminder from Stay Healthy Stay Connected... "Border restrictions are easing today (Monday 26 Oct) and Tasmania will begin to cautiously welcome interst...ate visitors back to our shores. We know it’s been a while, but let’s put our best foot forward by welcoming visitors back to our state with kindness. It's important that all of us, businesses and individuals, take steps to minimise the risk of COVID-19 being spread in the community. This looks like: practising physical distancing, washing our hands, and continuing to be vigilant about cold and flu symptoms. Business operators have COVID-safe business plans in place that must be adhered to. If we all do our bit to keep Tassie a safe place whilst treating one another with respect, we can continue to enjoy all our beautiful state has to offer."
