23.01.2022 CODSWALLOP Bottles. I could never figure out people’s obsession with collecting bottles. I’m not much of a collector though. I had a customer come in the Shop while Stephen was away the other day and ask me a question about a bottle. What is the marble for? I had no idea! So as the dutiful wife who likes to learn things I asked Stephen when he came home that night. It’s actually really interesting. These bottles with the marbles in them were cordial and soda bottles and app...arently there was a cordial factory in every town! The bottle’s with marbles were called a Codd-neck bottle. A Codd-neck bottle is a type of bottle used for carbonated drinks. It has a closing design based on a glass marble which is held against a rubber seal, which sits within a recess in the lip. In 1872, British soft drink maker Hiram Codd of Camberwell, London, designed and patented a bottle designed specifically for carbonated drinks. The bottle was designed and manufactured with thick glass to withstand internal pressure, and a chamber to enclose a marble and a rubber washer in the neck. The bottles are filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The bottle is pinched into a special shape to provide a chamber into which the marble is held when the bottle is opened. This prevents the marble from blocking the neck as the drink is poured. The bottles were resealable and reuseable. You probably think of cordial the same way I do: a coloured syrup mixed with water. But, if that’s all a cordial factory produced, why would most small towns have had one? In 1924 there were at least 230 in NSW alone. These factories didn’t just produce cordial! They produced medicinal tonics, alcohol, ginger ale and carbonated fruit drinks. So where have all the cordial factories gone? And why? By the mid 1930s the cordial factories were being challenged by big business and couldn’t compete, so now we have Schweppes, Coca Cola etc. In the 1930’s there was a cordial factory in Scone owned by Mr J T Aisbett. The refreshment stand at The Gundy Races was supplied by Mr J. T. Aisbett. It was Mr Aisbett, who owned the first lorry in Scone, which was used to cart the refreshments to Gundy in. Along with the cordials and ice drinks (which were manufactured in the Scone factory), bottles of ginger beer and lemonade were sold for sixpence a bottle. And during my journey to figure out what the marble is for I found an intriguing fact. The word Codswallop has nothing to do with fish! The word ‘wallop’ was a slang word for beer, so when Mr Codd invented his patent bottle with its patent stopper, his name joined with wallop went into the English language when drinkers were being disparaging to the non alcoholic drinkers! 21.01.2022 Congratulations to Holden for another great win at Bathurst this year!!!!!

19.01.2022 What makes antiques so enticing? Is it just because they’re relics from a different time, keepsakes from another age? Or are there different reasons to buy vintage items? For most people, one of the reasons they prefer something with old-world charm is that these pieces are generally well-made. They’re not mass-produced in factories; most of them are made by skilled artisans. The craftsmanship is amazing! Antiques Store operating in the Hunter Valley.
