18.01.2022 Since January 2012 Sunny Munasinghe and I have been working on defending a client falsely accused of dreadful crimes against a small group of girls. We have worked tirelessly to demonstrate that the allegations were not only unsustainable but clearly false. The investigating police victimised this man and allowed him to be abused and ridiculed by the mother of one of the complainants. He was treated as guilty from day one. ... We struggled to have the Courts allow cross-examination of the witnesses at Committal Hearing. The denial of that right is an injustice in itself but we were successful. He was required to defend the charges in the District Court. All separate matters. The charges have cost him his marriage and his home. He has spent near on $100,000 between us and the barrister in the last four years just to defend his otherwise unblemished name. He was previously a well respected member of the community. The problem with charges such as these is that the community believes what it wants. The Court of Public Opinion is too quick to convict and label someone a paedophile without knowing the facts. Allegations are easily made up and difficult to defend. My client didnt just give in. He retained quality lawyers who defended him to the extent of our ability and we won. Today, the last of the charges was discontinued. We won the case. We won his life back and we won his dignity. Well done to all the staff at BurnsLaw, the brilliant Sunny Munasinghe and barrister, Adrian Donaldson. Ill even take a little bow myself in this one.
