23.01.2022 Peter Seaford was the part owner of the Mobil Elliott Service Station in Whyalla. At about 4.00 am on Sunday, 12th March, 1989 the Service Station was broken i...nto, when an old water pump had been thrown through the front glass door, which activated an alarm connected to a telephone in Peter Seaford’s unit. Peter attended the service station and found that it had been broken into. He then rang a Ms Marron and asked her to come to the service station with the keys so that he could turn the alarm off, which she did in her car. They then realised that the takings from the service station were at peters unit so he quickly he returned to his unit for a short time. When he returned to the service station the police had arrived and were talking with Ms Marron. After speaking with police Peter became aware of a previous break in at his block of units that night and he returned home alone again to check his own unit, whilst Ms Marron remained at the service station. Ms Marron went to peters unit after speaking with police, she then found Peter on the floor with severe head injuries. He died as a result of these injuries. There was DNA recovered from the crime scene that did match a suspect. Police are still making enquiries. Major Crime received information from a caller to Crime Stoppers in 2006. This person had been asked by a third party to contact police and provide information on their behalf. Major Crime also received information from another anonymous caller in February of 2019. Major Crime are asking for the caller to contact them or Crime Stoppers also as their information is once again important in this investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

22.01.2022 150 Years Ago Today The Opening of the Northern Extension Railway to Burra 29 August 1870 In 1870 the line to Burra was the longest line north of Adelaide, the...re was cause for a great celebration. The Friends of the Burra Railway Station planned a big event to mark the occasion but Covid 19 intervened. The celebration is now planned for 2021 instead The Northern Argus 2 September 1870 The opening of the Burra railway on Monday [29 August 1870] passed of with great éclat. [brilliant display of effort]. The township put on its gala attire on the occasion, being plentifully decorated with evergreens, and the inhabitants of the surrounding townships turned out en masse. The crowd which collected at the station to greet the arrival of the special train with His Excellency and party must have numbered about 3,000 persons. The luncheon at the Goods Shed was a grand affair. About 300 ladies and gentlemen sat down to the spread. Effective speeches were afterwards delivered by His Excellency the Governor, Sir G.S. Kingston, Hons. J.B. Neales, J. H. Barrow, A Blyth, and other gentlemen. Altogether the event was one which will hold a lasing place in the memories of the Burra people. The scene in Burra on that day from the South Australian Register 30 August 1870 Verandah fronts were well nigh hidden under pine branches, and the housetops yielded a handsome crop of flags, many of them palpably new rigged for the occasion. In Market Square stood a triple arch, inspiringly decked with foliage, and breathing through half a dozen different transparencies words of welcome to the Governor and loyalty to the Queen and country. Across the main road in Aberdeen a second erection of similar character stood; while opposite his new Railway store, Mr Tiver had hung out a line of streamers to dry. In Ludgovan-street [sic] Redruth, Mr Davey, of the Court-House Hotel, had at his own expense built a really tasteful arch handsomely festooned with evergreens, and adorned with banners and mottoes. It was intended as a rival to the Aberdeen Arch, and in point of looks was decidedly its superior, although its dimensions were smaller. But to return to the terminus. Not only were all the platforms and available standing ground near the station adorned with pine and wattle boughs, but the various buildings were set off with a bewildering display of evergreens, which might have been Birnam Wood come back to Dunsenane, [sic] as in the days of Macbeth. The Goods Shed had clothed itself in evergreen till it looked a monster bower size 100 feet by 40 feet, and the Carriage Shed had blossomed into festive vegetation on a smaller scale. Its decoration had absorbed half a dozen good truckloads of material sent up from Wasley’s [sic] Station, while the Goods Shed, besides receiving its contingent from this distant forest of small trees, had occasioned havoc among the trees for 15 miles round. Fair hands had not been excluded from the pleasant task of preparing a welcome for the visitors extraordinary. Flags and streamers testified to their industry and all the colours of the rainbow vouched for the catholicity of the local taste. Inside and outside adornments were to be found, all resolving themselves into an effort to produce the most tasteful effect with the materials at command.

15.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING, LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS For people in all districts. A vigorous front associated with a complex low pressure s...ystem will sweep across the State this evening and early Wednesday morning. The front will first impact western coasts from late this afternoon then move eastwards to reach central parts around midnight. Damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h are likely with squally showers and thunderstorms for a period ahead of and following the front as it moves across the warning area. In addition, localised destructive wind gusts in excess of 120 km/h are a risk with stronger showers and thunderstorms, mainly about western facing coastal areas with and just ahead of the front. Damaging winds averaging 50-70 km/h at times are also possible away from shower activity. The threat of severe winds will move eastwards and ease later Wednesday morning. A cold, fresh to strong west to southwesterly airstream with scattered showers will persist. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Ceduna, Maitland, Murray Bridge and Kingscote. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees; Secure or put away loose items around your property. Keep clear of fallen power lines; Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe.

13.01.2022 Today is 75 years since the end of World War II We give thanks for all of those from Burra and District who served. We remember them. ... A list of names of those who served is below as well as what happened in Burra 75 years ago. Burra Record, 21 August 1945, page 1 The End of World War II News of the Japanese surrender was broadcast at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday 15 August. The news nearly caught Burra on the wrong leg, because all organised celebrations had been very hurriedly arranged. Nevertheless, within 15 minutes flags were being run up and pennants strung across the streets. Market Square and Commercial Street began to fill with excited people. Children heard the news on the way to school and either gave school ‘a miss’ or on arrival were told it was a holiday. They were among the first to march up and down the streets singing and, lacking streamers took spare rolls of sanitary paper as a substitute. Business people soon had windows decorated with symbols of Victory. After the Thanksgiving Service in the Town Hall people really began to realise that Peace had descended on the Pacific and celebrations really got going. Mrs S. Sandland, who had brought along bags of pennies, threw them to the youngsters, who were happy to scramble for them, chasing them from one side of the road to the other, quite unperturbed by the tooting of motor horns. Traffic was held up for some time. The hokey pokey was being danced in Market Square and flag bedecked cars were soon driving around and even a decorated spring cart, with its horse urged on by the tooting of some sort of ‘musical instrument’. Unlike the city barmen, those in Burra were not on strike and the hotels were well patronised all day. At night the shops were lit for the first time in many years and streets were bright. In the evening there was a welcome home social at the Town Hall for F/O Len Bence, Corporal Bob Morton of the RAAF and Able Seaman Tom Ryan. F/O/ Jim Warnes had been invited, but was unable to attend. The Mayor, T.H. Woollacott welcomed the guests home. The Burra Welfare Committee had carried out a splendid job (under the secretaryship of Mr A.B. Riggs) of seeing that the boys leaving for overseas were suitably farewelled and now that hostilities had ceased would see to it that they were welcomed home by the townspeople. Mr M.T. Fuller spoke for the RSL and Mr Jennison for the Burra Welfare Committee. Musical items were given by F/O/ Bence, Mrs Twist and Mr Garrard, who sang a ‘French Rumba’. Mrs Twist and the Burra North Winsome Warblers then rendered their well-known number, Is e an Aussie’. Dancing followed into the early hours of the morning. This spilled out into Market Square, where the crowd dances the Hokey Pokey and formed crocodiles and generally made merry to the strains of an orchestra mounted on a lorry. A few hoarded fireworks were produced and the occasional rocket set off. Later the crowd returned to the Town Hall, where eventually the proceedings concluded. On the following day things were considerably quieter and during the daytime there was little action. At night a band of young people did lift a piano onto a lorry and drove around the streets singing various songs and included a visit to the hospital to entertain the patients. The members of the newly formed Salvation Army Band also marched to the Hospital and back and entertained the inmates. Thursday night saw another dance at the Town Hall. 06.01.2022 The previous post told you that Burra Historian Eric Fuss was the recipient of the SA History Councils, South Australian Regional Historian Award for 2020 whic...h was held at the awards night yesterday evening in Adelaide. Eric was too unwell to attend, so some of his achievement are shown in the photographs. By far, the most outstanding achievement is Eric's summaries of Burra in the News from newspaper dating from 1845-2016. This work amounts to over 9,000 pages and is equivalent to writing an A4 45 cm thick book. This is a huge achievement and provides information from newspaper which is not readily available after 1954. We applaud Eric for his achievements as a quiet achiever who has done so much to advance our knowledge of Burra and districts history. His work will live on for generations to come. See more

01.01.2022 Clare’s 2020 NAIDOC event postponed due to COVID-19 Clare’s NAIDOC event, scheduled for this Saturday 21 November, has been postponed due to the recent COVID-19... cluster discovered in the Adelaide’s northern suburbs. Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council Chief Executive Officer Dr Helen Macdonald said the event’s organising committee had made the difficult decision after reviewing the State Government’s advice. It’s very disappointing not be able to go ahead with the event this Saturday, but the health of our community is a priority, she said. An important consideration is the risk posed to Aboriginal communities, who are particularly vulnerable to this virus. We plan to reschedule the event after the restrictions are lifted, so we hope to announce a new date within the next two weeks. We have a fantastic full-day event organised that we hope will come to fruition this year.

01.01.2022 A recent trip to the mid north gave me the opportunity to do some then and now outside of South East. Many thanks to the Lionel Noble collection for the use of a Peterborough photo.
