22.01.2022 Residents in Braidwood, Captains Flat and various areas in between have struggled to get reliable coverage of the ABC666 signal for many years. This is of parti...cular concern during emergencies such as bushfire and flood. Council has been working with a telecommunications contractor over the past few years to improve the signal via retransmission. Residents in those areas should now be able to access a stronger signal through the following frequencies Captains Flat and surrounds - FM 88.5 Braidwood and surrounds - FM 100.3 While we’re here - the forecast isn’t looking great this weekend, keep up to date via the new emergency dashboard at https://queanbeyanpalerang.disasterdashboards.com, your local SES Facebook page or via ABC Canberra Braidwood Bugle

20.01.2022 We are excited! One month to go til the Aussie Backyard Bird Count! Australia’s largest annual bird count event is back for its 7th year! Held between 192...5 October, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard, no matter where your backyard happens to be. In fact, you don't even have to leave home, making it the ultimate Covid-safe activity! To take part all you need is 20 minutes and your favourite outdoor space. Not only will you be contributing to BirdLife Australia's knowledge of Aussie birds, but there are also some great prizes on offer. Head over to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count website and register as a Counter today! https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ The yearly bird count gives us a snapshot in time of bird numbers around the nation so if you’ve participated before and are raring to go remember the app doesn’t kick in until the count begins on 19 October (one month to go!). #AussieBirdCount See more

19.01.2022 I was disappointed to learn that a majority of QPRC councillors had decided not to support a referendum to allow voters to decide the means of electing the mayo...r. I was instrumental in having the first referendum back in the 1970's, which was endorsed by well over 60% of those who voted. I pursued this course after a 6 6 vote between Mayor Fred Land and Frank Pangallo resulted in a draw from the hat to determine who would be mayor I believe popular election has been an undoubted success, it has provided stability and continuity in local government in Queanbeyan over a long period and removed the wheeling and dealing and arm twisting amongst competing councillors to get a vote. And even more importantly, the mayor is not beholden to any one councillor. What could be fairer or more democratic than allowing residents to determine who they want as their community leader?

18.01.2022 Fast moving, squally thunderstorms moved up from Vic into NSW yesterday thanks to a low-pressure system and trough extending from the Tasman Sea. More than 200,...000 lightning strikes were recorded over 24hrs across the two states. Widespread showers of 10-20mm fell across eastern Vic and southern central NSW, with 30mm at Mt Delegate (Vic) and 26mm at Upper Goobarragandra (NSW). With no more heavy rainfall forecast, this should ease over the next few days. Severe gusts were reported with the storms, reaching 107km/hr at Yarrawonga (Vic) and 95km/hr this morning at Lord Howe Windy Point. Fresh southwesterly winds are keeping conditions cooler today, particularly about the coast. Storms are expected to move into southeast Qld this afternoon, with the potential for severe storms between Boonah and Jimna. Storms may bring damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and large hail. 03.01.2022 Wombats are one of our iconic native animals that find riverbanks particularly enticing. Although it is tempting to see the ‘damage’ they do building their hou...ses in the banks of creeks and rivers, the impact of their activities is relatively minor in the context of the whole waterway. It is also important to appreciate the fact that they are one of the few native animals that have adapted well to the changes we humans have made to the landscape that was once their home. Fortunately, as this guide shows, there are some options for managing wombats in areas where they are not wanted or are in danger. Click the link below for more information.

02.01.2022 The potential to cut emissions from cattle so dramatically could significantly reduce the impact the beef industry has on climate change. But some scientists warn we need to be careful not to create "another cane toad".
