23.01.2022 Blessed Mary MacKillop who with reverend Julian Tenison-Woods founded the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1866, opened 23 schools in the northern diocese of South Australia from 1869 til her death in 1909. Notable amongst places she cared for were the mining towns: Kapunda 1868, Wallaroo in 1869, Kadina and Moonta within the year, Burra in 1871 and Blinman in 1874. The miners and their families were extremely poor. Mary MacKillop asked the Sisters to go where the people lived and li...ve as they lived. The Sister's housing was no better and no worse than that of the people who were "our people". With the exception of Blinman, Mary MacKillop walked the streets of each of these settlements as she visited the Sisters and the schools. In the 1920's older residents of Burra spoke of her as a much loved friend. It seems likely that the people in each town knew her as a kindly good superior who looked after their Sisters and their children. She visited the parents of children who were sick or in trouble. She visited Burra until 1883 where she was sent away from South Australia by the then Archbishop of Adelaide. We feel honoured and blessed that Saint Mary MacKillop has been resident in this property. #burra #history #catholic #convent #saint #mary #mackillop #visitburra

21.01.2022 Some of our majestic neighbours. The old telegraph office (now art gallery) and St. Joseph's Catholic church to which the convent once belonged.

17.01.2022 Burra Primary School 1949 Grades 6 and 7 Can anyone please help with naming these students?

15.01.2022 The year is 1954 and pictured is the 72nd class since 1882. If only the walls of the school could talk. We would love to hear from anyone who attended the school to tell their story. #burra #history #catholic #convent #school #visitburra #memories
