23.01.2022 OUR 2nd CAR IS AN ELECTRIC BICYCLE This year we upgraded to a new BMW X1, sold our 2nd car and converted my Mountain Bike to a mid-drive electric bike for $1400. The new car is saving us 30% of our running costs and has all the new eco-friendly features. No second car saves us about $12k a year, is greener and frees up space around the house. The bike costs 20c a fortnight to charge if you don’t have solar, runs at 25 km/h including hills, with a range of 32 km without ped...dling, more if you put a bit of effort in. The bike easily takes a small passenger on the back, groceries and a surfboard on regular trips to the park, lake, pool, post office, school, shopping centre and beach within a 3.5 km radius with minimum effort and reducing the use of the car by another 10%. For shorter trips to the local shops there’s also an electric skateboard and then there’s always public transport if you need to travel long distances. The hardest part was getting rid of the 2nd car because, although we only used it once a month, you think just might need it in an emergency one day. But the bike is so convenient to avoid the traffic for local trips in good weather, that I prefer it quite often. See more

20.01.2022 Did you know: The most important times in your life to do a Will and Power of Attorney are when you buy your first home and the have something substantial to give away. The second most important time to do a Will and Power of Attorney is when your kids are old enough to take care of themselves and you. The best time of the year to do this is over the Christmas and New Year break when everyone is visiting. Merry Christmas.

16.01.2022 This Winter, following all the recent energy savings advice we saved 50% of our electricity usage by upgrading our 1970's draft box home with: retro fitted insulation using bats and foam $750; low-e window tinting $1800; twin glazing fixed Windows $250; external architraves, gap sealing, foam and no more gaps around the aluminium window frames and doors $750; led light globes $150 and a hot water heat pump $2000. Now the house is twice as bright with air conditioning hardy needed if set at 19, the bedrooms average 19 and the lounge areas are 21 degrees. The house already had an efficient northerly orientation and we had efficient inverter appliances. If the government won't get it right, We are more than happy to be green and comfortable while saving money doing it ourselves. If anyone is interested, I am happy to share the details.

07.01.2022 WHY WE DON'T NEED HOME BATTERY STORAGE Maximum solar panels, insulation, hot water heat pump and efficient appliances mean we don't need battery storage. We used to make as much energy as we used, then spent half the money needed for batteries to cut our usage by half. We now make 2 times more power than we use at night to fund the difference in buyback rates from the energy companies to zero. The biggest savings were electronic with efficient appliances including a new bigge...r tv, led globes, smart power boards, digital timers and switching everything off with remote power switches at night. Right now we don't use air conditioning with the savings adding up to use in summer and winter when it's needed, which you can't do with a home battery. You can even run a heated pool and spa, if you do it when the sun shines. Even if you don't have solar panels you can significantly reduce your power usage like we did, one thing at a time until you finally run out of things to do. Let me know if you have any questions.
