22.01.2022 One of those days again. Since all this crazy fire activity has been going on who has been on the rfs website and got some tips on cleaning up your property???

22.01.2022 Thanks so much to Mels on Broadway for catering our Christmas party. After an ongoing massive effort this fire season a sausage on bread at the station was not going to cut it and tonights feed did not disappoint!

20.01.2022 WHAT IVE LEARNT ABOUT FIRE PROTECTION AFTER LISTENING TO EXPERTS * The safest place to be is nowhere near a fire, so the RFS will always suggest thi...s. * Many homes are not defendable, due to their location, the amount of fuel around them, the terrain, lack of water supply or pressure, lack of enough people to put out embers. * Most houses burn down from ember attacks, not fire fronts. * Ember attacks can occur up to a couple of hours before a fire-front hits, and after the front has passed. * Houses dont just explode in the face of intense radiant heat - solid objects (like houses), do offer protection from radiant heat. * Most fire fronts pass on average within around 7 minutes, but it can take up to 20 minutes. * Windows can break during a fire front, so embers can then enter the house and cause an internal fire. Have visible access to roof cavities in case embers get up there. * It is a mistake to clear all trees away from around a house- as they can offer a screen of protection from embers, and can maintain a higher level of humidity around the house. * Tree branches hanging over a house roof are dangerous and should be removed. * Native species like eucalypts have a very high oil content, while introduced species (other than conifers) usually have around 10% of the oil content of native trees. It is safer to have low oil content trees near your home. * Trees with rough bark will often create the most dangerous embers when burning - these are not good to have near your home. * Most deaths in fires are from people trying to flee a fire front (best to not try due to the speed of fires, lack of visibility, obstructed roads), or not seeking adequate protection in a house or not doing it safely. * Leaf blowers can be just as effective as water in putting out grass or spot fires, and in eliminating ground fuel from the house surrounds or containment lines. Dont use leaf blowers to clear gutters as this can just force fuel up under your roof. * Embers can attach to cobwebs on the outside of the house, under veranda rooves - or anywhere; and these embers, held in place by cobwebs, can then acts as wicks for fire. * It is possible to defend your home against both ember attacks and fire fronts, but in both cases you need to have an adequate water supply with powerful pressure soaking all aspects of your house. You need to eliminate or radically reduce fuels outside your home and on verandas. Your plan needs to include multiple sources of water (both hoses and buckets) with the means of putting out spot fires, e.g mops, wet towels, hessian sacks etc. * Fire travels much faster uphill than downhill, due to the fuel being above the flames. If being approached from below by an uphill fire, you will have less warning and time to respond. * Planning is essential - planning to prevent your home being vulnerable; planning what to do in case of an ember attack; planning an exit to a safe place if defence has failed, e.g to a shelter, behind a solid wall, or to burnt/clear ground. * Dress in wool and cotton clothes, so that no skin (or hair) is exposed. Wear heavy duty boots, gloves, face protection, wet towel around your neck; breathing protection and goggles - Dr James Alexander

20.01.2022 How good is a drop of rain! Dont let it lull you into a false sense of security. I cant stress enough how important it is to have a fire plan and prepare your property. There is a lot of information on the rfs website. ... Also remember how important community is too, this can be on a small scale like chatting with your neighbours or organising a street meeting. Burringbar brigade members are taking a few days break from out of area deployment. After a massive 3 weeks its a well earned break.

19.01.2022 This morning at 03:02 Kingscliff Firefighters were responded to reports of a car fire on the Pacific Highway near Cudgera Creek. On arrival the crew found a car... fully involved in fire and extinguished the fire utilising breathing apparatus and a line of hose. Drains were bunded with spag sorb to contain the toxic run off from the car. Also in attendance was Burringbar Rural Fire Brigade, NSW Police Force and NSW Ambulance

19.01.2022 Ever wondered how fast a grass fire can move? With the @Bureau of Meteorology predicting a warm and wet spring there is likely to be good grass and crop growth across NSW. With this growth will come the increased risk of grass fires. Maintain your property, be prepared and have a plan.

17.01.2022 Information regarding sugar cane burning on Total Fire Ban days as per Total Fire Ban Rules available on the NSWRFS website. The commissioner may cancel this exemption at their discretion.

17.01.2022 Big thanks to Heaths Old Wares for donating a brass nozzle for the Dennis fire truck after they heard it was stolen a few years back. Cheers guys.

16.01.2022 For your information

15.01.2022 Theres not a lot to report today, our fire crews have spent the day mopping up and patrolling all firegrounds. Were taking advantage of the cooler conditions... before is heats up again next week, so why dont you do the same? Take the time to speak to your family about what you will do if a fire threatens you and your home. Here are some questions to get your discussion started: If youre going to leave what will be your trigger to go, where are you going to go and what roads are you going to take to get there? What will you need to take with you medications and prescriptions, important documents like insurance and identification? If you have animals Can you take them with you? Do you have their food or medications? Preparation around your home reduces the fire risk. Now is also a good time to do some simple things around your house. Cleaning your gutters, removing flammable items from around the house, trimming over hanging branches and mowing your lawns can help protect your home from ember attack. For more information about what you can do to survive a bushfire go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/bush-fire-survival-plan Photos from the Yabbra Road fireground, started by a lightning strike yesterday.

14.01.2022 Absolute worst case scenario.

14.01.2022 Just got home from helping Kunghur with a large flair up at Doon Doon. Straight into property protection for us with other brigades chasing it through the paddocks. The best bit was grabbing some Links Pizza on the way home.

13.01.2022 Kunghur RFS would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our community that has assisted us over the past months in whatever form that assistance ca...me. Your help has made the past few months far more bearable and the community support has emboldened and fortified us for the future. With the coming of some summer storms it has allowed us all to breathe a little easier but we must remain vigilant as the fires may be subdued but they are not extinguished and conditions can change quickly so please stay alert. Once again thank you all for your wonderful support. See more

12.01.2022 How good is this rain Please be aware of trees that may come down as soil softens, especially trees damaged by fire and if we get some follow up wind. How good is this rain Please be aware of trees that may come down as soil softens, especially trees damaged by fire and if we get some follow up wind.

12.01.2022 Thanks to the community for all the donations over the last month or so. Well be having a meeting early in the new year to decide on what to spend it on. There will be a big focus on equipment that can be used for keeping the community safe. Also where possible the money will be spent locally which is good for everyone.

10.01.2022 With the predicted warmer temperatures along with changing winds and lower humidity, please take some time to ensure you know what to do if fire threatens. Stay informed and stay hydrated.

09.01.2022 These community meetings are great! Keep it up guys. Just a reminder though when you hear us bang on about this stuff all year round and have our get ready weekend in September we are trying to prepare you for a fire season like this one.

09.01.2022 All fire permits are suspended tomorrow Monday 16 November.

08.01.2022 Working on the fire at at the end of Blakeneys road it was so good to see so many properties with good water supply. This includes Storz fitting on tanks and even one set up on a suction line in a dam as well as good access to dams. In areas away from town water supply this could make all the difference.

08.01.2022 All fire permits are suspended tomorrow Sunday 6th Dec

06.01.2022 Main Arm Brigade has responded to 3 callouts over the past 4 days to pile burns that have not been registered on the Burn Notification Line, two in one day! Ple...ase be aware that if you intend to light a pile you need to notify us on 1300 632 174 and let your immediate neighbours know before you light that pile, otherwise you can expect the brigade to turn up and put it out. This system is in place to help the brigade and community in managing fires in our area, it avoids unnecessary callouts. From 1st September you will need to apply for a fire permit to light a pile, this is the start of our fire season. Although we have had decent rainfall compared to last year please be aware that wind has dried fuel, the grass is cured and fire can burn quickly. The burn notification number is 1300 632 174. Pass this onto your neighbours, Thanks, Lance

06.01.2022 If you have a pool, dam or other static water supply, contact the NSW RFS to get one of these signs, and put it outside your house. This helps the firefighters ...who may need water. This sign could save your house, and your neighbours as well! The signs are available at the UKI RFB station. Message Uki RFB to arrange a pick up. See more

06.01.2022 PROPERTY IDENTIFICATION IMPORTANCE We have been on this subject for some time but if a fire has impacted your area or is going to, correct address signage locat...ed on the primary road entry access point is essential to get emergency services to your property. Also it enables passers by who are unfamiliar with the area if they see a house, stock or even horses at risk to call in a report. While a GPS might give an approximate location, a number on the gate or letter box is a sure way we have the right place. Consider a reflective one as in the dark its even harder to find a property. Thanks to all who have recently upgraded their signage! See more
