24.01.2022 Thanks Barney, we will take that 10mm on 29.4.20.

23.01.2022 We take a break from cropping after 24mm of rain at the weekend. This gives us an opportunity to dehull spelt for Biodynamic Marketing Company.

22.01.2022 You beauty Barney - 10mm of rain is just what our crops need.

22.01.2022 The Betsy's Wholegrain Loaf - Symbolic of co-operation during a pandemic. Baker @twofoldbakehouse Miller @oakandswan_sourdough Grower @burrumbiodynamics... The Betsy's Wholegrain Loaf travels full circle back to Australian farmers Steve and Tania Walter, Marnoo, Victoria, where the 12% protein wheat originated. The farmers contacted Betsy Evans from Oak and Swan Sourdough in March 2020 to inform her they were receiving hundreds of inquiries a week for produce. Betsy, a long term customer quickly streamlined delivery arrangements to secure her supply of wheat. A distributor was appointed to ensure a consistent flow of grain to the bakery, who could better negotiate covid-19 road check points. Artisan baker Alison Wilken from Twofold Bakehouse offered to help the Marnoo farmers sort and pack grain before the first lockdown. Tania reflected; "We were exhausted from cleaning and bagging grains as fast as we could - the offer of practical on-farm help was comforting, and we are grateful that Alison offered the services of her entire family". Pic: Tania holding the Betsy's Wholegrain Loaf in the wheat crop 18th October 2020 - due to be harvested in December.

22.01.2022 Field peas harvested last night are being cleaned today. Burrum Biodynamics is certified Australian Demeter Bio-Dynamic a National Organic v3.7 Standard. The peas will be planted next year in multi-species crops to build soil fertility naturally. There are no weedicides allowed in this system. Weeds are sifted out with on-farm seed cleaning equipment.

19.01.2022 Our grain crops are up and off to a great start. This week we will plant peas and lentils. Pic: Rye Crop 25.5.2020

19.01.2022 This paddock we are walking through will one day be planted with a wheat crop. The plants here are nitrogen fixing legumes - beans, clovers and medics. It can take many years for us to prepare an area for a crop as wheat needs a store of nitrogen to have a good protein level. All of our paddocks cycle through natural building up phases and are all @australian_demeter_biodynamic Certified.

19.01.2022 Barley due to be harvested in December.

18.01.2022 Examining the roots on this years spelt crop 19.6.20. There are plenty of worms underneath the crop. We applied @australian_demeter_biodynamic Biodynamic 500 to activate soil to help make the nutrients available from last years multi-species crop (see 3rd pic taken Spring 2019) The multi-species crop was specifically planted to help boost this spelt crop naturally.

17.01.2022 We have received a welcomed 25mm of rain over the last seven days. Pic: Our @australian_demeter_biodynamic certified pea crop 14.8.20.

15.01.2022 Today is World Biodynamic Day. What does biodynamic mean to us? It means working with life, diversity and beautiful smelling soil. The www.demeterbiodynamic.com.au method is a formula that enabled us to get off the conventional farming treadmill.

13.01.2022 Our biodynamically grown spelt crop is looking healthy. This spelt crop (Pic 26.5.20) was planted into a paddock that was planted with a multi-species cover crop last year (Pic 11.9.19). The multi-species crop was cut and carefully incorporated into the soil to improve fertility naturally. See biosoil.net.au/faq and bdgrowing.com/books for more information.

10.01.2022 Mulching nitrogen rich lucerne today. Lucerne is a perennial that keeps on giving to improve the soil. Our soil biology will feast on the clippings helping to increase organic matter.

08.01.2022 How does Farmer Steve grow food without using chemicals or water soluble fertilisers? Example: Building up Tickys Paddock to plant wheat in 2021. (Records audited by Australian Demeter Bio-Dynamic). 1. Harvesting bean, medic and clover seed to plant in other paddocks next year to help build soil nitrogen levels naturally.... 2. Straw is spread across the paddock by spinners behind the header. 3. The back of the header is set up for chaff lining. Weeds are funnelled into a narrow windrow. The GPS enables Steve to put the weeds in the same spot every year. 4. Insert: In 2019 a multi-species crop was planted in this paddock. It was mulched and green manured to increase organic matter. Biodynamic 500 is applied annually to enliven soil microbiology. 5. Wild oats throughout this multi-species crop have already partially dropped. This is noted and sowing rates of next years wheat crop will be increased to help choke out weeds that germinate after planting.

03.01.2022 Can Horrenzo The Horrible protect the Heritage Wheat Trial Plot from any further bird damage? Farmer Steve inspects the damage done to the seed heads of the Yecora Red Wheats. Tania said "The trial plots have been a fantastic project over lockdown and we will raid our rag bag again if we need to. Horrenzo is wearing the witches hat so I might use the old blonde wig stored in the dress ups cupboard if we decide to make Horrenzo a girlfriend."
