06.01.2022 Howard, William 1838 1930 The town at Burrum was originally named Steley but later there was an altercation and it was renamed Howard in honour of George Cocky Howard and his son, William, who played an important role in developing the Burrum Coalfields.... William Howard was born in 1838 in Hobart, Tasmania, the son of George Howard and Matilda Pattie. The family moved north to Maryborough about 1855. William spent some years in the upper Burnett and five or six months in Gympie. He was the first white man to sight the lsis Scrub in 1861 which is the current Childers area Cordalba and Dallarnil and also Bodalla which now is Apple Tree Creek and this also consists of the Burrum and Gregory Rivers. William married Elizabeth Broom (born 1845) at Agnes Vale cattle station in 1861. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Broom and Elizabeth Mclntosh who had overlanded from the Namoi River in New South Wales to the Maryborough area in the 1850’s. William and Elizabeth made a home on the Burrum River in 1B69. The couple had six sons and two daughters. The eldest, William George, was born in Maryborough in 1886; (died 1916, Apple Tree Creek). Siblings Thomas John Broom (born 1865), Robert Charles (1869) and Alfred Selby (1873) were first-day enrollments at the Burrum Provisional School on 18 February, 1879. Their father was listed as a coal proprietor, Stephen Arthur (born 1867) enrolled six days later.
