23.01.2022 From horse and cart to one of the first cars in Toowoomba, TS Burstow, for all his staid qualities, apparently had an uncharacteristic need for speed. An old newspaper cutting reported that our founder, then the Mayor of Toowoomba, was fined for taking his horse and sulky from Ruthven St into Margaret St at a speed greater than a walk. But it was when he purchased one of the first cars in Toowoomba that TS really found himself in trouble. After taking delivery of his F...ord and starting it up, he found he was unable to stop it. He reportedly travelled around the city until it ran out of petrol! These are the stories that, alongside many fine accomplishments, make a family history. We are very proud of the Burstows’ legacy a legacy of real people across five generations as we celebrate our 120th year of caring for the Toowoomba community. #BurstowsFunerals #AFDA #toowoombafunerals #familyownedfuneralservice #Burstows #familybusinessaustralia #familyhistory #toowoombahistory #queenslandhistory #toowoomba #warwick #dalby #oakey
21.01.2022 Flatpack cardboard coffins and quick cremation services have kindled conversations around funeral pricing and funerals being appropriate to the person who has died. Individuality is definitely one significant element of a funeral service’s overall role, which is most importantly to help the living transition to life without the physical presence of a loved one by celebrating their life and offering a final farewell. A meaningful funeral service need not be traditional o...r expensive, but there is no cheap, quick fix for grief and mourning. As English scholar John Donne said, He who has no time to mourn, has no time to heal. That is why we offer empathy, ongoing support, advice and expertise alongside a range of services and price choices at Burstows Funerals, to ensure you are not alone in what can seem the overwhelming task of organising a funeral when you are under enormous sadness and stress. We treat you as we would one of our family, and those who have died with the utmost respect and dignity, honouring their lives with ceremony that facilitates remembrance, celebration and hope. Everything we do is based around the concept that funerals are important because life is important. Life should be celebrated, and loss and grief shared and embraced to start people on their healing journey. 20.01.2022 When is the last time you put down the phone, turned off the TV and got outside to just breathe in the world? "I realise now that I used to be overly busy. I was better at doing than being. But now, I'm appreciating every slow, unscheduled moment." World-renowned grief counsellor Dr Alan Wolfelt reflects on the fact that the pain, heartache and inconveniences of Covid-19 have made many people, including himself, stop and think about what is really important in life, and be ...grateful for what we have now. "... we tend to go through life obliviously, with a high level of assumed invulnerability. Yet each of us is mortal, and living every day with an intentional awareness that we might not wake up the next enriches every minute .... 19.01.2022 It's natural to worry, but many of us worry too much. We spend hours each day mired in our "what if" thinking. What if this happens? What if that happens? What if they both happen and then this third thing happens? Worry is the opposite of mindfulness. If you are mindful, you are here, now. (Ready to embrace what is happening around you.) If you are worrying, you are living in a predicted, theoretical future (which may never happen).... One sure-fire antidote to worry about the future, is hands-on activity today. When you feel yourself slipping into worry, engage your body. Go for a walk and place your awareness on sights and sounds. Grab a broom and sweep. Potter in the garden. Cook. Knit. Fish .... Based on Dr Alan Wolfelt's book 'One Mindful Day at a Time: 365 Meditations on Living in the Now'. 18.01.2022 How can they be gone? It’s a natural reaction to someone’s death, whether that be someone you know personally or someone with whom you have felt a connection, as in the case of a celebrity. In the past few weeks, cricketer Dean Jones and musicians Johnny Nash, Eddie van Halen and Helen Reddy have all passed away, and sometimes how deeply this affects us can surprise us. World-renowned grief counsellor Dr Alan Wolfelt from the Centre for Loss and Life Transition acknowledg...es that we grieve for different losses, including divorce, job loss, or anything we have a strong connection to. In the case of the stars, they have often played a part in our own identities. Their song lyrics and their characters voice our own inner thoughts and feelings. They not only entertain us, they speak for us. They help us understand and lay claim to our deepest desires, Dr Wolfelt said. They remind us of a time and place, particularly in the case of transition periods in our own lives such as our teenage years, so that when the star dies it feels like a part of us has died too. We question life, feel alone, because these people were to us larger than life, seemingly invincible. Dr Wolfelt says, you might find yourself feeling distracted, irritated, anxious, moody, angry, regretful, and sad, by turn Rest assured that your grief is normal. Whenever we grieve, the path to healing is through mourning expressing our grief outside of ourselves. Mourning is talking about the loss, crying, sharing our thoughts and feelings in whatever ways we choose. All of these outpourings help us to heal. 16.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone involved in organising this year’s #CarnivalofFlowers in such difficult circumstances. It’s off to a great start as we saw from the crowds on the weekend. Keeping with our historical theme, we are sharing a few photos from Remember Toowoomba When of the Carnival Parade from the 1950s. Such elegance! And just look at those crowds no physical distancing and certainly no health and safety issues with the people on those rooftops! With Tuesday the... only cloud on the weather horizon and sunny days forecast for the weekend, Carnival 2020 may look different, including no major parade, but it will no doubt find a happy place in many memories and hopefully give businesses a much-needed boost. Have a happy Carnival! #ToowoombaCarnivalofFlowers #tcof #carnivalflowers #BurstowsFunerals #AFDA #Toowoomba #toowoombafunerals #familyownedfuneralservice #familybusinessaustralia #familyhistory #Toowoombahistory #Burstows
16.01.2022 Symbols and tradition play an important part in funerals, helping us to cope with our grief and a reality that is hard to accept. Flowers are a wonderful symbol of love and support, and a reminder to mourners that there is still beauty in the world. Like the candle, they are also a symbol of life's continuation after a death. (Dr Alan Wolfelft) Some families prefer that money which would be spent on flowers instead be donated to a charity that was special to the deceased, fe...eling that this provides a longer-term purpose. However, for some people, especially in today's world, sending flowers may be their way of "being there" at the service when they cannot physically. To allow friends and family the choice as to how to show their love, consider rather than saying "in lieu of flowers" in funeral notices, saying "memorial donations may be made to ....." in the deceased person's memory. At Burstows Funerals, we also provide the option of Hugs from Home a new service that allows mourners who cannot be at the funeral to share a message of love and support which is professionally presented and attached to a white balloon flown within the chapel. Find out more at https://www.burstows.com.au/support-and.../hugs-from-home or call to speak to one of our caring experts about funeral arrangements on 4636 9600. #BurstowsFunerals #AFDA #DrAlanWolfelt #centreforloss #grief #Toowoomba #Dalby #Gatton #Oakey #Warwick #toowoombafunerals #familyownedfuneralservice #Burstows
12.01.2022 Burstows Funerals is renowned for its dedication, values and family and community focus. That began right back with our founder TS Burstow, whose service in local government began in 1901 and continued for 27 years. Among many other achievements, TS Burstow was instrumental in gaining city status for Toowoomba in 1904 and was the first Mayor to wear the robes of that office (although Toowoomba's first ever Mayor was William Henry Groom in 1861). TS Burstow was also elected M...ayor in 1907 and 1919. TS was obviously a man of very set ideas and as Mayor opposed mixed bathing at the council baths. However, seeing the future, one of his daughters protested, bathing with the men to show her disapproval of his stand. Imagine the headlines today's tabloids would make of that! As the 4th and 5th generations in the family business 120 years on, we are very proud of the special place TS Burstow has in Toowoomba's history. We have a couple more interesting anecdotes regarding our forebear's "need for speed" before moving onto the life of his son Alfred Ernest Burstow. #BurstowsFunerals #AFDA #toowoombafunerals #familyownedfuneralservice #familybusinessaustralia #familyhistory #toowoombahistory #burstows #toowoombahistoricalsociety #remembertoowoombawhen #queenslandhistory #toowoomba #warwick #dalby #oakey
