25.01.2022 I’m 4 days sober today! This post is for you if you’ve been slipping into bad habits and excusing them because: Social media says EVERYONE else is doing it PANDEMIC... Homeschooling Working from home You’ll get it under control when life gets back to normal It has become your coping mechanism I totes get it. The reason I am sharing my new wine free situation is to help turn around the current social norm of alcohol indulgence, and encourage you to stop waiting for things to change. You can be the change. For me, when I slip into bad habits, moderation doesn’t work. I can’t just cut back to one glass three times a week. I have to completely cut it out. My feeling is that I need to be totally sober for 3 months, but I’m willing to 100% commit to 7 weeks (which brings me to my birthday) and then we’ll see! If you’re doing something at the moment that you don’t feel comfortable with and you want to change, I’m here to tell you you’re not alone, I’m a Naturopath and I’m not immune! You can do it! I’m supporting myself with herbs and nutrients that help to build dopamine and serotonin as well nervous system and adrenal balancers and liver support. I’m also treating myself to top quality kombucha (in a wine glass) in the evening instead of wine. If you’d like to join me in cutting out your vice and taking back control let me know. We can do it!

22.01.2022 Just your friendly remedial massage therapist reporting for duty! I’ve been wearing face masks and vinyl gloves to massage since reopening face to face consults. The second photo shows the new face hole covers I have found that are water resistant and fantastic! I’ve been looking for something like this for years and I’m so glad @purifas have come into my life!... You may not know this but vinyl treatment tables do not like alcohol so finding an appropriate cleaning product has been stressful. Enter Micro Defence (3rd photo) which is a vinyl safe hospital grade disinfectant. All of this on top of alcohol wiping door handles, pens, eft machines, disinfecting soft furnishings and ventilating the room after each client. Cleaning has almost become my full time job! It’s all worth it though because it means I get to continue doing my job, which I love. #stopthespread @ Dural, New South Wales, Australia

21.01.2022 By far the best booch on the market! Before I had Akira, I used to make my own kombucha. And it was AMAZING! For me, the perfect booch has no stevia , packs a natural fizzy punch and an almost vinegary (but not unpleasant) kick at the back of the mouth.... It’s very hard to meet all of my requirements with a store bought booch. In fact, it’s practically impossible! Lucky for me @kombu.kombucha ticks all of the boxes and I couldn’t be happier! This discovery has definitely helped me with kicking my wine habit. I buy mine at @taste.organic in Turramurra but if you spot it anywhere else let me know!

20.01.2022 On International Women’s Day 2021, I choose to challenge. Challenge gender bias, inequality, workplace safety, our right to walk alone at night and everything in between. A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. Let’s all choose to challenge. ... #IWD2021 #ChooseToChallenge Tagged are some of the women in business who inspire me. @kimgatenbyacupuncture @bethpupovac @motherlovegiftco @platformno5 @studio.2158 @alisonm_naturopath @bekymaree

17.01.2022 For my fellow praccies. The Australian Traditional Medicine Society asked me to write a blog about my experience as an exhibitor at the Hills Wellness Expo. It took on a life of its own, as these things often do, and became more of a guide to attending any expo/industry event. ... I hope you enjoy reading it and find it helpful if you attend events in future. https://www.atms.com.au/how-attending-community-events-can/

16.01.2022 Day 5 of the 10 Day Body Reset I don’t know if you can tell, but my skin is literally glowing! I wouldn’t usually post a photo of myself without makeup or sending it to Lightroom first, but I wanted to give you a real glimpse of me mid reset. I have ZERO cravings... My appetite is balanced My gut feels comfortable and is less bloated My energy is good My skin is glowing My mind is clear I have lost weight (1.2kgs on day 3 and I’ll weigh myself again tomorrow) I’m just sitting outside and writing an email to the other 14 people who have signed up to the program. So far, reports have been that everyone found the first 2 days challenging (headaches, loose bowels, brain fog, cravings) but that by day 4 (and day 5 for one person) everyone is feeling AMAZING! I’m actually considering going a little bit longer than the 10 days... but we’ll see how I feel next Thursday! The program is not just about food. It’s a complete healthy habit reset with lifestyle and mindset tips included as well. If you’re interested you can find out more here https://www.burtonhealth.com.au/s/10-day-body-reset-program #10DayBodyReset #practicewhatyoupreach

12.01.2022 My friend (and Burton Health tea stockist) @motherlovegiftco gave me some homegrown pumpkins on the weekend so I whipped up this simple but delicious pumpkin soup. All you need for this winter warmer is pumpkin, onion, garlic and chicken stock. Roasting the veggies really brings it to life. The recipe is on my blog > https://www.burtonhealth.com.au/blog/roasted-pumpkin-soup... I visited @taste.organic in Turramurra yesterday, so completed my feast with delicious squashy bread rolls from @bonfire.bread and the most amazing pineapple and galaxy hops kombucha from @kombu.kombucha Souper Satisfying!

12.01.2022 8 weeks today since my total hip replacement and today I walked more steps in a day than I would’ve for over 5 years. For my THR rehab I was told to build up to 1000 steps a day in the first week and then increase by a thousand each week. This week I am meant to be building up to 9000 steps a day. But today I have done over 11000 steps and 22 flight of stairs and I’m ready to do more! The problem with having a 4 year old as your walking buddy is that he spends more time stop...ping to look at things or talk, than he does walking, so it takes quite a while to get the step count up, but it’s also nice to stop and smell the roses with him. I actually can’t believe how good it feels to walk without pain. I honestly didn’t realise how bad my hip was before. I have thought of a way to describe what it felt like walking with my old hip. You know when you walk through thigh deep water and if it’s a few steps it’s fine but if you were to walk through thigh deep water for 10 minutes or 20 minutes (or your whole day) it would be really difficult and tiring. THATS WHAT IT WAS LIKE! Not anymore! Now I feel as light as a butterfly!

12.01.2022 One Pot Mexican Black Beans and Rice It’s not really one pot if you count cooking the rice, but it’s flipping delicious so can be forgiven for it’s fib. We like to have the leftovers in a wrap with lettuce and sour cream/Greek yoghurt.... It’s one of the 20+ delicious recipes in my Immune Support Meal Plan. You could be eating this for dinner tomorrow night. Grab your plan from my online store and get cooking! #BHmealplans

07.01.2022 Tips to keep your plate in check. Every time I shop hungry I end up with a shopping basket of shame Hot tip: save this post so you can refer back to it as needed. ... . . . . . #naturopath #healthyeating #healthyhabits

07.01.2022 I did my first Instagram live today. It was only up for about 20 seconds because I didn’t realise I needed to save it as IGTV to make it hang around It was a bit of a rant, but mostly the purpose was to encourage you to be your own health advocate and not settle for below-par health care. I have been through the ringer this past fortnight with what I consider less than adequate care for my well-being. While the medical professionals I have visited have obviously done their ...job well, diagnosing pneumonia and prescribing medications, I have felt that everyone has been more preoccupied with confirming my C19 negative result, rather than caring about how I am actually doing. Today was the final straw when I attended an appointment to visit my GP (which I booked weeks ago for different reasons) to be told I would be seeing someone else (because I have a cough and apparently that means I have no right to choose my practitioner). I’m a very non-confrontational person and usually don’t like to create any kind of scene or fuss, but I had hit my limit and insisted that I needed to see my GP. I was so over it and felt so dehumanised that I was on the verge of tears. But I got to see my GP and for the first time in weeks I felt heard, seen and cared for. So what I’m trying to say is, if you feel like a statistic, like a number, like you are your condition rather than your person, like you can’t have a discussion with your practitioner or that you’re not being heard. FIND SOMEONE NEW! There are so many fabulous practitioners out there, in all fields, and you only get one body and one life so don’t settle for being treated like anything less than the most important person in that consultation room.

07.01.2022 When life gives you pneumonia for your birthday and you have to cancel all of your celebrations, the only thing for it is a carpet picnic with your main men! Thanks to @aldiaustralia for all of the fresh, Aussie grown fruits and veggies that packed a flavour and nutrient punch into our lunch! And my mum for dropping over a care package full of yumminess to help make my day special. I’m looking forward to a family b’day bash with the whole Burton crew next weekend!... Now it’s 7pm and time for this sicky nanna to go to bed! . . . . . . . . . #aldihaul #aldipartner #gifted #aldibackyardpicnics @aldiaustralia @ Marsfield

05.01.2022 FUN FACT I was once eating a bowl of Greek yoghurt and frozen raspberries, when I bit into something unusually crunchy. I took it out of my mouth and was horrified to see that I had in fact eaten a frozen Christmas beetle hidden away inside a raspberry It took me many years to recover from this event. A long time of not eating raspberries, then only eating them after carefully inspecting the inside of each berry. Now I enjoy them a lot more freely and the crunchy beetle on...ly pops into my memory once or twice! #somethingyoudontknowaboutme . . . . clearly not my legs - Cocobol via @unsplash

02.01.2022 Eight years ago I opened the doors of Burton Health. 8 years! It was so important to me to reach 5 years in business because I felt that if I made it to 5, I had succeeded. I almost missed this 8 year anniversary, until my husband congratulated me this morning (thanks to Linkedin notifications). ... The opening of my business should’ve been one of the most exciting times in my life. Sadly it was clouded by jealousy, bullying, legal threats, the death of a friendship and a whole heap of negativity. It was rough. But, I learnt a lot and I came out of it a better person. It took me a long time to process and accept the extremely unpleasant way my new path began. And it required me to identify my own failings to truly let it go. I learnt that I needed to speak up and be a lot more open. My inability to express myself effectively initiated the whole mess and these days I’m a lot more expressive and willing to share my feelings even if it literally makes me squirm! (I used to be so scared of blushing that I wouldn’t speak just in case I went red so speaking about something that made me uncomfortable was almost impossible). Even though it was hard, I’m so glad I got here. Just over 8 years ago I remember standing in the kitchen complaining to Jono about the latest crappy thing that had happened at work and he turned to me and said Laura, you either need to leave or stop complaining about it. Sounds harsh but it was exactly what I needed to hear. If you’re uncomfortable and squirmy where you are right now, something wonderful might be coming. That’s pretty exciting! So cheers to transformation, growth, and following your path even if it’s lined with bumps and ditches! 21 days sober yesterday so i’m cheers-ing with sparkling mineral water
