25.01.2022 | BRANDING | Did you know my logo was also designed by a former architect? Way back in the day @klee106 and I had desks next to each other at an architecture office. Must have been fate because we discovered we had so much in common, including similar design aesthetics and big dreams outside 9-5. So when I started my jewellery brand, I knew there was no-one else I would rather design my branding. Lee created my 'B' logo with a single serif - the little tail on the top le...ft - rather than the usual two (hands up if you noticed! ) He did this to reflect the unique and individual style of the @burtonmetaldepository customer. He told me "serifs are to typography as accessories are to fashion". We've been working together for close to 10 years now, and Lee continues to wow me with the graphic work he comes up with. He and his partner have also just launched a line of gorgeous and sleek eyewear @vaanyard , which you should definitely check out! Who else has an amazing long-term work relationship? 17.01.2022 In great partnerships, each individual brings something different to the table. I love the way G & H have combined ethereal floral designs together with striking minimal lines for their wedding. Although you can't see it in this picture, these @burtonmetaldepository rings are engraved with patterns inspired by pines and mountain ranges, which complement the painted autumnal leaves of the beech tree on the @peggyandfinn accessories perfectly. What a beautiful marriage of Aust...ralian design. Oh and the bride and groom looked stunning together too Thank you @photographybyemmapointon for the photograph. #flatlayfriday #australiandesign #weddinginspiration

08.01.2022 | STORY | 7 years, 4 cities, 1 shop and a gazillion pop-ups and market stalls later... I'm still obsessing about the best way to blacken silver and whether my lines are lining up with each other haha I'm actually surprised that I managed to find these photos of one of the very first pieces of jewellery I designed and made. At the time, I was still grappling with the fun job of being a graduate architect @tkdarchitects . But thanks to a school friend, I got hooked on maki...ng silver jewellery at Tafe and well, once I started I couldn't stop! I continued learning all I could at @pine_street (thank you community arts!) and then moved to @gaffagallery with my tutor, the wonderful and very patient Alida (she makes gorgeous jewellery AND ceramics so check out her work @madebyalida ). Fast forward a few crazy years of architecting Monday-Friday and then soaking up real life jewellery world experience at @georgjensen Saturday-Sunday. I got my registration as an architect, then decided I'd had enough of that, so threw myself into the treasure-chest of precious jewels and delicious gemstones that is @victoriabuckley boutique the very next week! I began @burtonmetaldepository a few years later in response to a gap I saw in the market for high quality, Australian jewellery designed specifically for men. With the guidance of @thedesignresidency and many others, it's grown to become what you see today! There are still so many things I would love to do and so many places I want to take it. My biggest frustration is that things never happen as fast as I want them to, but luckily I get reminded by cool businesses like @meetgathercollect that "slow progress is still progress". So that's where I'm leaving it now, as I have a to-do list taller than me, and some puppies in my studio demanding pats! Please keep following me for more this month in the #marchmeetthemaker series (founded by @joannehawker ). #marchmeetthemaker2020 #creativelife #whomadeyourjewelry @ Australia

07.01.2022 | CLOSE-UP | One of my long-term art crushes is MC Escher. When I was 13, I found a diary with pictures of his distorted perspectives prints and would stare at them for hours in class, following his figures on their neverending march to infinity. Although I'm not making miniature staircases to nowhere now, I do think his work has had a big influence on my designs - the way my lines wrap infinitely around a ring, or how small geometries fit snugly within larger ones of the ...same shape. Take for example my Delta ring, shown here. From a distance, this band would just look like a minimalist ring with a simple triangle in black on it. But up-close, you'll find the triangle is actually made up of a patterned texture of more tiny little triangular pyramids. And each tip has been carefully brushed so it contrasts with the faces of the pyramids. It's something you'd only see if you look closely. Plus it's fun to run your finger over. It's these hidden details that I love discovering when I'm out and about - walking into a building, looking at a photograph, or even enjoying a beautifully plated meal. For me, they turn something wonderful into truly wondrous #designinspiration #godisinthedetails #marchmeetthemaker2020
