20.01.2022 Simply the Best

20.01.2022 The Burwood United and Concord United Rugby League Clubs have a long and proud history that is unique and enviable. Our clubs origins date back as far as 1912, when Burwood Shamrocks began playing in the Western Suburbs Junior Rugby League, only 4 years after the introduction of Rugby League in Australia. The Shamrocks morphed into Burwood Juniors in 1921 and continued the inner west domination of the junior league. In the 1930s to the mid 1940s, Concord Ritz would take... position as one of the competition powerhouses. Burwood RSL emerged in 1947 and then changed its name to Burwood United in 1950, who would over a 50 year period, field a team every year up to 2001. A split in the club in 1957 saw the formation of Concord United which would be the start of an era where the 2 clubs would remain mortal enemies until the merger in 2001. This chronology of events positioned our present club, Concord Burwood Wolves, to be amongst the oldest continuous entities of the junior rugby leagues clubs in this country The claim could also be made that we are the most successful junior club in Australia with Concord and Burwood clubs and the merged Concord Burwood Wolves, accounting for 189 Premierships combined, far outweighing the next closest club when competing in their respective competitions, W.S.D.J.R.L (1911-1987) & B.D.J.R.L (1986-2017). Our Club is both a family and community based club that has seen steady growth each year since the merger in 2001. And although our Club has become one of the largest in the Balmain district, we have not lost sight of our objectives by providing our youth with a healthy sporting environment in which we promote good sportsmanship, friendship and teamwork. A big thank you to all those people who contributed and purchased the Book A Union in League. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and trust you have a safe enjoyable break over the holiday period. Regards Paul

19.01.2022 Concord United Rugby League - A True story Part 1 For Concord United 1961 is remembered for the titanic matches played between the G grade U/12 teams from Conco...rd United and Enfield Federals. The two U/12 teams played each other six times in six weeks. As both teams finished level at the top of the ladder after the competition rounds had been completed, a playoff match was arranged which Enfield duly won. The two teams clashed again in the Semi-Final and at the end of full time the scores were level at 3-3. This Semi Final was replayed with Enfield victorious 11-3. They met again in the final, and at full time the scores were locked at 11-11. Extra time on this occasion however handed the victory to Concord and under the WSDJRL rules, gave the Minor Premiers Enfield the right to challenge in the Grand Final.

06.01.2022 Concord United 1961- Part 2 And so they met again in the Grand Final resulting in a 0-0 draw! The Grand Final replay was also held at Henson Park but this time ...as a curtain raiser to the Wests v Manly reserve grade Grand Final. The result of this match was yes, a - 5-5 all draw and with no change in scores after five minutes extra play each way, sanity prevailed and both teams were declared Joint Premiers. In June 2017 I attended the Concord United 60th Anniversary Dinner at Massey Park Golf Club. i was handed a sack full of trophies, being told that they were found in his fathers shed and would I like to have them. The following week whilst looking through the sack I discovered a gem - the actual trophy from that Grand Final! 57 years later this refurbished piece of history was reunited and presented to 2 players from this team, Kevin and Jeff Darke at the CBU Wolves dinner earlier this month. This is just 1 of the hundreds of stories and pictures from The book "A Union in League". A book that rugby league commentator Peter Tunks exclaimed on 2SM recently " a great book, if only other junior clubs had something like this" . 02.01.2022 A post script to the Concord United story from last weeks episode of "the fan" on foxtel. A special mention to George and Harley Reynolds. George was a former President of the club and his son Harley also played for Concord. It was Harley who approached me at the Annual Concord United dinner 6 months before the book was to be published, with a bag full of old trophies, medals and pewter mugs that his father George had stored in his garage. i took the bag home but did not go through the contents until 2 weeks later and was astounded when i found this trophy, albeit in a fairly average state. needless to say the rest is history!
