09.01.2022 Last week we worked at Happy Valley on the Newnes Plateau for Local Land Services Central Tablelands and Forests NSW. This section of swamp has a long history of disturbance with many attempts to restore in the past. Previous attempts were damaged by both 2013 and 2020 fires, in both cases the area was opened up to vehicle access and resulted in a bog hole being formed. LLS and Forests decided that a more permanent option was required to allow motor bikes to cross in a managed section while excluding 4x4 vehicles. A crossing of sandstone was constructed. Thanks Bones Excavation for your skilled work. Video of the bikes crossing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaBoDflB304
04.01.2022 SARSPARILLA SELLER. SYDNEY’S HAYMARKET. 1912/15 An elderly man sells Sarsparilla shoots at Sydney’s Haymarket. Please note: This is the native sarsparilla vine. It has nothing to do with the soft drink, which is simply a flavour. ... BACKGROUND... The native Australian sarsaparilla (Smilax glyciphylla) is a climber that grows in open forest and rainforests, predominantly on the coast. The leaves and berries were traditionally drunk (as a medicinal tea) by indigenous communities. In the early days of colonisation, it was used to treat scurvy, coughs and chest complaints. It was traded at least up until the late 19th Century by Sydney herbalists. Recent research shows that Smilax glyciphylla contains antioxidants and hospital controlled trials have been conducted using it as an alternative for insulin for diabetics. (photo. Rex Hazlewood.
