09.01.2022 *** 8 YEARS ON - REMEMBERING BLACK SATURDAY *** #vscweather #blacksaturday #8yearson As a weather fanatic, I've also been fascinated by natural disasters. But b...efore Hurricane Sandy in 2012, no other natural disaster captivated my imagination more than Black Saturday. On the 7th February, 2009, Victoria was set to see the worst bushfire conditions ever - temperatures set to be in excess of 40 in most parts of the state, winds up and beyond 100km/h, and little to no rainfall in the last two months. The rest as they is well and truly now history. Melbourne reached 46.4 degrees, with many extreme temperature records either created or absolutely smashed. 173 people died when fires absolutely ravished half a million kilometres worth of bone dry bushland. Every year I am beyond fascinated and fearful of what Black Saturday did to everyone, not just those directly affected. I sat in a restaurant in south west Sydney for my sister's birthday on the 8th of February, and it wasn't until I saw the charred remains of houses and the ferocity of flames that it really hit me. The images hit me more so 8 years on as I begin my journey to study climate science, to study why freak events like this occur. Black Saturday encouraged a huge review on fire management practices nation wide. It is because of Black Saturday that we now have the "Catastrophic" fire rating. Join Victorian Storm Chasers today as we remember Black Saturday, 8 years on. Our admins will share with all our fans stories and memories of this day, and we encourage our fans with stories to share theirs too. Today we honour the lives lost 8 years ago through sharing the Australian spirit through our stories. Emily :) Photo credit: The Australian
