16.01.2022 In line with the Third Step of the Victorian Government’s Reopening Roadmap, which came into effect on Wednesday 16 September at 11:59pm, Mt Hotham is again open for visitors from regional Victoria. Things to do: The Hotham skifields are not operating, and due to limited snow cover there is no cross country skiing, toboganning or snowplay. ... However the Alpine National Park is open, and Hotham’s local walking trails have reopened for people living in regional Victoria. More information about our beautiful tracks and trails is on their website. As a result of the cessation of winter services, the Resort Entry fee is not being charged. However, the mandatory requirement to carry and fit diamond-pattern tyre chains if directed remains in place until otherwise advised by Vic Roads. We remind visitors that despite the warmer weather, in our alpine environment the weather can change quickly, and visitors should check forecasts and be prepared for snow and ice.

14.01.2022 When out exploring Victoria’s spectacular spots, Parks Victoria recommends some basic preparations to stay cool, stay safe, and have fun. Please take note of the following: Check conditions: Visit www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963 for current park conditions. Be fire aware: Familiarise yourself with bushfire safety information. Check www.emergency.vic.gov.au for information on active fires, danger ratings and total fire bans, or download the VicEmergency app to receive cu...stomised alerts. Do not leave your fire unattended. Your campfire must be within line of sight and be within 50 meters of a going campfire at all times. If not, put out with water until it’s cold to touch. Fire to be 30cm deep, a maximum of 1 meter x 1 meter wide and high and a cleared area of 3 meters surrounding the fire. No rubbish including cans or bottles to be placed in the fire. Pack the right gear: Protective clothing, appropriate footwear, plenty of water, extra food, wilderness first aid kit, map, compass and GPS. Emergencies: In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000). Be aware you may travel out of phone range. Road and Track conditions: Please call 13 1963 for current track conditions and/or track c closures. Stay in touch: Let friends or family know your plans. Avoid walking alone. Remember there may not be phone reception. Prepare for adverse weather: What’s the forecast? Are you weather-ready? Check www.bom.gov.au or download the BoM app for forecasts in your area. Caring for the environment: Keep wildlife wild: don’t feed native animals. Carry in, carry out: take all rubbish with you when you leave. Respect heritage: both Indigenous and European. Stay on track: don’t widen tracks or take shortcuts. Penalties apply when driving off-road. Motorbikes to be registered and riders licensed. Motorbikes to remain on formed roads only. They are not permitted on walking tracks. Dogs are not permitted in Mt Samaria State Park or the Alpine National Park. Penalties Apply. Got to ‘go’? Use a toilet or take a walk at least 100 paces from water and campsites. Dig a 15cm hole and cover well. Need a shower or wash dishes? Please do this at least 50 meters from any waterway to keep our rivers clean. Road and Track conditions: The majority of the Seasonal Road Closures take effect as of the Thursday AFTER the Queens Birthday weekend. This is to protect the environment and to protect the tracks over the wetter months. Call 13 1963 for track closures. See more
14.01.2022 Parks Victoria rangers were recently surprised to uncover some spectacular Red Beak orchids, Pyrorchis nigricans, found growing in the Cape Conran Coastal Park in East Gippsland. Red Beak orchids are a rare sight at Cape Conran Coastal Park, as they generally only grow after being stimulated by intense fire activity. Interestingly, the name Pyrochis comes from the Ancient Greek word pyr meaning fire and orchis meaning orchid. Despite the vast impacts of the summer 19/20 bushfires, rangers were pleased to see how the recent bushfire has helped nature to thrive in the park by creating a favourable environment for certain species to grow again.

10.01.2022 Heat-related illnesses occur in many forms. Most of these conditions can occur in the absence of heat stress, with the heat simply serving to exacerbate them. Examples include cramps, dehydration and impaired heart function. The one true heat-related emergency is heatstroke, a life-threatening condition that requires urgent recognition and treatment in the field. In general, the risks of heat illness are greatest with intense exercise in hot, humid environments with high levels of UV radiation. More information below. #WalkSafe #hiking #bushwalking
09.01.2022 Werribee Gorge State Park is a favourite place to walk for bushwalkers. The W James Whyte Island Reserve is adjacent to the Werribee Gorge State Park and embraces sections of the Werribee River and Myrniong Creek, including important geomorphological sites and areas of remnant vegetation. It was donated to Conservation Volunteers Australia in 2006 by W. James Whyte. Regional members of the Melton Bushwalkers certainly enjoyed a beautiful walk there recently. #bushwalking #hiking #nature #outdoors #bushwalkingclub #fun #fitness #friendship #active #BushwalkVic #bushwalkingvictoria

06.01.2022 Parks Victoria has an exciting volunteer opportunity in the Upper Murray area around Shelley. The grasslands around Shelley are home to the Striated Sun Month. This moth is only found at three locations across Australia: Shelley, the Northern Plains and the ACT. It is very rare and there is not enough information on it to list it as threatened - rather it is listed as Data Deficient. Parks Victoria is gathering information about its population size in Shelley. The Striated... Sun-moth only emerges for a few weeks over the Christmas and New Year Period, and since last January’s survey was cancelled due to the major bushfires, Parks Victoria is inviting volunteers to help gather this information. Task: to walk around the allocated grasslands looking for the moth between 11am 3pm. When: 4th and 5th of January 2021 (come for one or both days) Location: Shelley (between Corryong and Tallangatta) Vacancy: 10 spots on each day What to bring: hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, lunch, walking boots, gaiters, Thermos with hot drink NOTE: The day must be sunny or partly sunny for these surveys to go ahead. If the forecast is for stormy weather the survey will be postponed. Accommodation: If you are not a local and join the team for both days you will need to organise your own accommodation. COVID-19 restrictions: Due to safe hygiene practices Parks Victoria will not be organising transport. Individuals will be required to drive their own vehicles to the survey sites each day. This is a Parks Victoria sanctioned volunteer event. To participate, please register for the survey through Park Connect: https://www.parkconnect.vic.gov.au//public-planned-activ/

01.01.2022 Last week a woman fell 80 metres to her death at the Boroka Lookout in the Grampians after climbing a safety barrier to take a photo. In the past five years, the SES has conducted 32 high-angle rescues at Mount Buffalo, Mount Buller, Taggerty and the Arapiles. Another major reason for rescues is walkers ill-prepared and equipped for weather changes, as our Board President, Colin Macdonald recalls happened during a bushwalk in the Bogong High Plains where the weather turned from pleasant to sunny to rain and then sleet in just over a couple of hours. Please have a look at Bushwalking Safety Essentials here: https://bushwalkingmanual.org.au//safety/safety-essentials/ #WalkSafe #planning #bushwalking #hiking https://www.theage.com.au//authorities-warn-of-chasing-soc
