23.01.2022 Queensland Walks had a stroll through the beautiful Brisbane CBD Botanic Gardens to launch our fun and celebratory campaign #WalkWeek Thanks for leading our wal...k Minister Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller (who had just come from a 6km run beforehand). The walk was organised by our walking friends Heart Foundation, Heart Foundation Walking and State MP Member for Lytton Joan Pease MP. Wonderful to have Dr Robyn Littlewood from Health and Wellbeing Queensland and Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation along. Our friends at 10,000 Steps joined the walk remotely from Rockhampton! Where will you be walking during Walk Week? Share your photos and stories during #WalkWeek - Aug 17-23 - and you could also be in the 'walking' for a catered lunch, or vouchers of your choice. 13.01.2022 Upper Caboolture | Submission Anybody know these couple of the delights. My granddaughters were riding horses in sheep station Creek (Phelps rd entrance) & hub...by heard motorbikes &went to try & stop them. They wouldnt listen when asked them not to ride because they might scare the horses & young kids were riding. The young guy got irate when hubby was taking pics of them & was punching hubby while his GF hit him in the head several times with her helmet. Update: The following information has been issued in respond to the claims made by the other party involved. The truth of the story is they where riding there bikes in sheeps station, where stopped on a bench he came down, away from his horses and where his grand kids are, told them to fuck off from near where he was with his grandkids and started taking pictures of the 2 younger bike riders to report them, one of the riders tried to snatch the phone and then the older man retaliated and put him in a head lock, so the younger rider has stood up for him self in self deference, the older man also attacked the younger girl who was trying to break it up and then escalated from there. the older gentlemen had fallen over and hit his face on the gravel. Police have been have been contacted for comment. We will update once we have that information to follow up. #6NEWS | fb.com/6newscomau

09.01.2022 UQ BVRT ON-TRAIL FACE-TO-FACE USER SURVEYS TO COMMENCE THIS FRIDAY, 14th AUGUST Throughout May - June this year, the UQ Business School Service Innovation Allia...nce conducted their Brisbane Valley Rail Trail User Study (Visitor Research Project) online surveys. The BVRT Visitor Research Project is a joint initiative between Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) (TMR), Somerset Regional Council & the UQ Business School. The purpose of the Project is to undertake market research that will allow us to better understand Trail users, & potential Trail users, which will in kind influence investment surrounding the Trail, identify areas for improvement, & create more economic & tourism opportunities. The UQ Team are about to commence the next phase of this study, building upon their online surveys, with face-to-face user surveys, which are being collected at select points along the Trail from this Friday, 14th August (Brisbane EKKA Show Holiday). Two data collectors will be stationed at both Fernvale (by the Fernvale Futures Complex) & in Esk, at Esk Pipeliner Park. Staff will be wearing identifiable purple (The University of Queensland) UQ shirts & will have iPads to collect data. The following dates have been slated for further data collection (weather permitting): Saturday, 19th September 2020 AM (School Holidays) Saturday, 26th September 2020 AM (School Holidays) Monday, 5th October 2020 AM (Queen's Birthday Public Holiday). 04.01.2022 One simple trick that will help stop your shoe laces from coming undone... well, actually, there's two tips. One from me and one from an expert in rope access and vertical rescue, Richard Delaney from RopeLab. Trust me, this video could change your life! :-D

04.01.2022 Queensland is rapidly catching Victoria as the state to visit for amazing rail trail experiences. Massive kudos to Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller, the Transp...ort and Main Roads Minister, for announcing this great regional project, which runs 45km from Bundaberg North to Gin Gin. The first stage will be 23km and will include a major refurbished bridge at Splitters Creek, and prefabricated bridges for the remaining creek crossings. We met with Minister Bailey back in March and called for the acceleration of rail trail projects to capture the economic and tourism rewards. And heres the refrain from Minister Baileys media release that we have to keep saying every time people say theres no money for active transport projects: For every dollar we invest in bike riding, that means $5 returned in economic benefit to our region dollars crucial as we turn the tide on COVID-19. And by the way, when you get to Gin Gin, theres the Watawa trail that goes from the centre of town to nearby Tirroan. And then head towards Mt Perry to see the amazing Boolboonda tunnel. : Splitters Creek Bridge...ready to be restored! https://www.abc.net.au//bundaberg-rail-trail-bitt/12577294

03.01.2022 Here's good news....from the Conondale Great Walk...

03.01.2022 Im working on a concept for a YouTube documentary on the Brisbane River from the source in the Bunya Mountains to the Port of Brisbane. Do you want to be pa...rt of it? The series will cover the waterway itself, homesteads, farms, villages, dams and gold fields. We will investigate the natural environment and its changes, land use, engineering landmarks, local history and in particular the oral histories of the people that live, work and recreate along the 400 Km path. The project will rely on strong community engagement and interaction along the way. The first 100Km or so will be by foot, then kayak. One episode per month is a reasonable goal, involving two days of fieldwork and a couple of days of post-production and coordination for the next leg. All in all, a part-time project probably spanning 12 months. Episodes will be released as and when they are completed, as we work our way down from the range to the bay. I need a fellow traveller for this journey so if youre looking for a project with lots of walking, kayaking and community interaction let me know. Prerequisites are relentless curiosity, love of nature and history, community spirit, ideally some camera/production experience and gritty determination. And good walking shoes We would also need support from: - Historians and historical associations specialising in the districts immediately surrounding the Brisbane River and the Cooyar Creek branch. For the first half of the series this would include (but not be limited to); Bunya Mountains, Cooyar, Kooralgin, Gilla, Teelah, Avoca Vale, Linville, Moore, Harlin, Cressbrook and Wivenoe. - Community members with oral histories of these districts, particularly seniors, and families that have lived there (ideally within walking distance of the waterway) for a long time. - I'm very keen to involve members of the aboriginal community. - Mad-keen individuals or associations of fishermen, boaters, walkers, kayakers, hunters and anyone else using the river for recreation. - Biologists/ecologists/geologists etc with specialist knowledge of the river and the Brisbane Valley - A person with access to RPData, who can help identify land owners that will be asked for permission to access. - Any other help on offer. What do you think does this sound interesting, and can we make it happen? Magnus (House Histories) email: [email protected]

03.01.2022 Anyone going to Carnarvon Gorge? Lost property...

03.01.2022 While most of us finished work for the week yesterday (Friday) at 1730hrs our volunteer members were activated for a Search and Rescue at Mount Greville, where ...male hiker became disorientated after climbing the summit via the Waterfall Gorge Track. Tasked by Queensland Police service their mission was to locate the missing person and to assist him in returning to base, thankfully the missing person had mobile contact, food and water. Our teams located him at approximately 2330hrs with the assistance of Polair providing his GPS location and the missing person was safely guided back to base at 0530hrs. The team and male hiker were greeted by Queensland Ambulance personnel to treat the missing person and to ensure that he didnt obtain any injuries. Our teams out west have an incredible amount of experience and knowledge of the area and we are thankful for their huge effort overnight. We thank our volunteer members from Aratula, Boonah and Tamborine Mountain for carrying out a successful search and rescue last night had we hope they all enjoy catching up on sleep today.

03.01.2022 An interesting and informative look at the Trail. Now we can see why Section 12 is so challenging!!!

02.01.2022 Interesting read on Australian Snakes... DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important. In hospital we NO LONGER NEED to know the type of... snake; it doesnt change treatment. 5 years ago we would do a test on the bite, blood or urine to identify the snake so the correct anti venom can be used. BUT NOW... we dont do this. Our new Antivenom neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, so it doesnt matter what snake bit the patient. Read that again- one injection for all snakes! Polyvalent is our one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins. 3000 bites are reported annually. 300-500 hospitalisations 2-3 deaths annually. Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish. While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season. Lets start with a Basic overview. There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously) Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans. All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood). This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site. It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream). Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood. Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc. Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck. Back to the snake bite site. When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues). The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten. Stay still!!! Venom cant move if the victim doesnt move. Stay still!! Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream. In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further retard venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream. A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (dont wash the area). Technique: Three steps: keep them still Step 1 Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite. Step 2: Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin. The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage. Step 3: Splint the limb so the patient cant walk or bend the limb. Do nots: Do not cut, incise or suck the venom. Do not EVER use a tourniquet Dont remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing. Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement. Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees. Bleeding - internally and bruising. Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing. Pain In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb, and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound. Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice. Final tips: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom. Photograph by Angus Emmott

02.01.2022 A new project is identifying national parks across Queensland for possible renaming in First Nations languages. Cape Upstart National Park may be the first unde...r the project to receive a new name in the traditional language of the regions first inhabitants, following public consultation. National parks, their features and significant locations that are to be renamed, or dual named, under the new National Parks First Nations Naming Project will be identified by the end of 2020. NPAQ is proud to note that since our origin in 1930 we have urged the use of Indigenous naming, rather than any persons name, for national parks in Queensland. https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/90294

01.01.2022 We would strongly advise against use of the BIT until creeks have gone down & this inclement weather has passed. The BIT follows quite rugged & steep terrain th...at becomes very slippery in wet weather, not to mention a multitude of creek crossings (which do not have culverts). Stay safe. And if it's flooded, forget it.

01.01.2022 Brisbaners, and Brisbane visitors. What's better than a bridge over troubled waters? A green bridge of course! Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner Cr Ryan Murphy and B...risbane City Council are working on green bridges for Brisbane and have released draft designs for Kangaroo Point and Breakfast Creek green bridges. We congratulate council on this commitment with an aim to making Brisbane more walkable with safe, connected, and separated infrastructure. We know that every $1 spent on walking has $13 in return to the city and people! Overall, Queensland Walks is happy with the designs, but we suggest shading is essential on Breakfast Creek, and some more detail needed on connecting paths and crossings for Kangaroo Point and CBD. We will be providing this feedback in more detail to council and publishing to our website. We really encourage the walking community to provide feedback to council. Feedback closes September 18, so get cracking! https://buff.ly/2GAAPmy #wewalkqld #qldwalks #walkablebrisbane #safeconnected #healthyactive #spaceforhealth
