21.01.2022 Starting a business is like learning to ride a bike. It looks easy and everyone around you is doing it. Some people can even ride with no hands but regardless, it all takes practise, persistence and being open to learning new skills to get the hang of it. As children, you are learning something new every day and you keep persisting day after day, failure after failure until eventually one day you succeed. You watch, you copy, you accept the support of those around you and you... accept that you need training wheels to get started. All with the aim that one day the training wheels will come off and you'll be able to balance on our own. You fall and you get back up and try again. But once you've learnt to ride a bike, you never forget. You might feel uneasy the first time you get back on after years of not riding but you'll still know how to ride a bike. Business is no different. It challenges you every day. There's always something new to learn and something new to try. The key to success in business is no different from learning to ride a bike. Seek help, accept the training wheels, practice, persist and have knowledgeable people supporting you. See more

15.01.2022 Ever feel like you’re on the verge of failure? Like you’ve tried so hard to succeed but feeling like everything is about to collapse from under you at any moment? You started your own business so you could have a better life and set yourself up for your future and you’ve worked hard, put in long hours and remained dedicated. At one point in time, you were doing well, the business was thriving, you were making money and could live the life you wanted, but then things slowly be...gan to change. You now face the reality that you may one day lose everything and you may end up with nothing to show for all of your hard work. People around you think business is booming and you’re doing well, meanwhile, you’re feeling stressed, anxious, even depressed and just trying to keep your head above water. Everything looks calm on the outside but you feel like you’re drowning on the inside. Your finances are in a shambles, hell, you’ve been too scared to really look at them lately but you know one thing, they’re definitely not going in the right direction and you’re constantly wondering how you’re going to continue to pay your bills. There’s a good chance anyone who has taken any kind of risk in business or investing has likely been here before. You’re not alone and help is available. The best way to get through this is to speak to someone and seek outside advice. Find someone who can understand your situation without taking on the raw emotion. Someone who will not feel sorry for you or make you feel ashamed but will help you regain composure, take action and work out a plan to overcome the overwhelm. There will be some quick, easy wins and some longer-term changes that will help turn your business and your heartache around but sometimes you’re too close to your own problems to see how. Choose a friend, acquaintance, professional service provider or all three but choose them wisely and don’t always act on the first piece of advice you receive. There will be many options available to you to choose from. However don’t just choose any old friend or family member, choose someone who has been through this situation themselves or someone who has been successful in business or investing and is able to offer a logical instead of the emotional view. If you don’t know anyone like this, seek independent advice. If you’re not comfortable with the options presented to you, keep looking, keep searching for help. The first answer is not always the right answer. Help is out there and you will get through this. See more

14.01.2022 How are you feeling about your business right now? Are you feeling defeated, like everything is impossible, everything is hard, feeling worn out, unenthusiastic and avoiding taking any risks whatsoever or are you approaching opportunities and obstacles with possibility, passion, energy and enthusiasm? Don't get me wrong, some days are harder than others and we all have our moments, but it's important not to spend too long dwelling on the negatives or you might find yourself ...stuck there. When every opportunity is an instant no or you're feeling excessively worried, tired, risk avoidant and just generally over it, you're less likely to be able to come up with the solutions to solve your business problems and grow or improve your business the way you need to, to build the business and the life you really want. Here are two ways to get out of the impossibility rut: Take a break to reset. That's right, schedule time away from your business, whether that be a few hours, a day or a week where you dedicate it to yourself and do something you genuinely enjoy. Read a book, play with your children, go for a walk. The key is to not feel guilty and not to think about your work to-do list. This will give you a little more headspace when you do get back to tackle those problems that you've been putting off. Utilise outside business support. Talk to your accountant, get a business coach or business mentor, participate in business programs, courses and workshops. Attend educational talks and information sessions or join a group of like-minded business owners. Your local chamber of commerce or business network is a great place to start. There are also business mentoring programs available to suit any (or no) budget so don't let cost stop you. You'll find the problems you face are very common and that other business owners have navigated similar difficulties with success. By spending time with experts in their field or people who have achieved what you would like to, you'll see that it is possible for you too and you'll learn quicker, easier and proven ways to get there. Don't go it alone. I absolutely could not do it myself without the extra support I receive.

09.01.2022 Want to know what's holding you back from growing or improving your business? It's your thoughts. Many business owners think and say "I don't know", "I'm stuck", "I'm too busy" and "I don't have enough time" or "I don't have enough money" however if this is you, you are blocking the possibility of improving the way your business operates, which ultimately prevents you from having a better performing business with more time, more money and less effort. ... To make quicker progress getting from stuck to super successful, change the way you think. Start asking yourself and others questions. Write down the problems you face that you would like to disappear. You don't have to have the answers, you just need to start by asking the questions.

05.01.2022 When you have a location-based business and you notice people from your local community are choosing to shop elsewhere, are you: 1. Continuing to do what you've always done and hoping things improve? 2. Assuming the reason is purely based on price, even though you cannot compete on price and still be profitable?... 3. Asking yourself and your customers why they're not shopping with you as often as you'd like and trying to get to the bottom of it? Here are three things you can do to understand why locals are choosing to shop elsewhere: Review your current stock list against your sales data to see which items you sell the most of and which items you sell the least of. Notice which categories your best performing and worst performing products fall into. Do they have anything in common? If there are items that are not selling, consider discontinuing these and stocking more products that fit into your top-selling categories. It can also help you identify new products which align more closely with your top-selling categories. Get clear on who you serve and what you stand for. It's very common in small towns to have a diverse business, offering multiple types of products and services and this can be a clever way to remain profitable when operating in a small community, however, trying to be all things to all people is likely diluting your identity as a business and in turn making it harder for your potential customers to understand what you sell and why. Collect customer feedback. Send a feedback survey, have a suggestion box or interview your customers with the purpose of listening to their feedback, challenges, ideas and suggestions. This is invaluable information and something that locals often hesitate to share directly with business owners due to the feedback not being welcome, or risking upsetting good people who they know well if the feedback is not 100% positive. You can overcome this by asking for feedback, being open-minded and listening without taking it personally and without judgement. When collecting feedback, be sure to ask both what your business is doing well and what opportunities there are for change or improvement.
