24.01.2022 http:// HELL YEAH? Friends, quick one for those of you expecting funds from le ole friends at the ATO: If you have received MORE than you were expecting and have gone nuts with excitement and started planning your iso-break out party, please stop.... There have been some glitches in the ATO system. There have been offsets applied differently than expected. There is just a lot going on, right? So please check before you go spending up that money. And if it is right? Go for gold, my friend!

21.01.2022 http:// BAS AGENT WHAT? So whilst it's been quiet on the posting front here lately, I've still been around (lurking, if you will) and have noticed a surprising amount of businesses popping up and offering a range of bookkeeping services. Why is this anything I’m bothered about? Because a lot of them are not registered to do the work they’re selling. And that kinda annoys me. Registration is something these people either don't even know about, or do not care about. Hot tip: both at...titudes are B.A.D. If you're looking to hire yourself a legend to help you with your accounts, please check if they are registered BAS Agents. Pretty, pretty please with sugar on top If the person you're looking at getting bookkeeping services from isn't a registered BAS Agent, please educate yourself on what tasks they can and cannot lawfully do for you. Your finances are important, friends, make sure they're in the right hands

20.01.2022 http:// HUMANNESS One of the things I love most about running this awesome business? The absolutely amazing humans I have the privilege of working with. Anyone who's emailed me over the last few weeks has received my autoresponder that I've been working from the hospital, beside my Dad who just had brain surgery.... These beautiful clients I am so grateful for have asked if he (and I) am ok; they've let me know it's ok to reply when I can; and they've been incredibly kind when they've needed something urgently. A few people though? (and I mean a very, very small amount of people) have received that auto reply and seemingly forgotten there's an actual tiny human behind this business, lost their manners, and their humanness. So while I’m powering through all the work I can to provide great service to these legends I work for (because workaholic), I’m taking a minute to be so appreciative of their patience and support. Choose to be kind. Remember there's a real person behind every one of these businesses you work with, send enquiries to, ask for help from. We're all human after all. We are not robots. We got feelings, yo'. @jens_johnsson

19.01.2022 http:// SINGLE TOUCH PAYROLL Right this way for our friends with employed team mates! I'm sure you've heard about this new, super fun thang our friends at the ATO have rolled out called Single Touch Payroll, or STP for short. If you haven't, please Google it, or get in contact, like, yesterday. This is important.... Each time a payrun is completed for your fab team, the payroll info is to be submitted to the ATO. Most accounting software makes this really easy. In Xero, it is literally a few mouse clicks #welovexero The ATO will be receiving info each payrun about how much your team are paid, how much tax was withheld from their pay, and how much super they should be paid. The thing to be mindful of? Super funds will also be reporting to the ATO, letting them know when you make payment of your team's super. So, if you're ever thinking of not paying super on time? Do. Not. Not only is it not cool, the ATO will now know for sure that you've done this. Happy payroll-ing, friends! @happymundane

15.01.2022 http:// BANK RECS AKA bank reconciliation AKA checking your bank balance in your actual bank account matches to the bank balance in your accounting software... AKA REALLY, *REALLY* IMPORTANT TASK If it’s too early in the morning to be having this kinda chat, please save this for later. And no, not because I’m being a good social media person and having a CTA or because apparently the algorithm likes saves these days, but because this is important, you guys. If you’re DIYing your books, this is a must. If you’ve got a champ doing your books for you, this is something they should be doing. At the end of each month, please, for the love of all that is good in the world, follow these steps: Step 01. Ensure all of your banking items are reconciled/matched/coded/allocated to the correct places (ie. You don’t have items sat in your bank feed waiting for you). Step 02. Run a bank reconciliation report and check if there any exceptions, or transactions listed that shouldn’t be there. Step 03. Ensure that the balance on this report for your bank account matches to the actual balance of your bank account online. If the amounts match you can give yourself a pat on the back. Good job If the amounts don’t match you have a problem somewhere You may have doubled up some sales receipts, which means you might be about to double pay tax on that (no thanks!). Or maybe you’ve marked something as paid but forgot to pay it (oops). Or maybe your bank feed has glitched (it happens occasionally) - either items have been missed or they've doubled up. We’ve seen all sorts of causes for variances in bank balances: it’s always fixable and ALWAYS in your best interests to make sure these accounts are correct. Happy bank balancing, friends @oscar.dumlao via @minimaluploads

09.01.2022 http:// HI! I'M AIMEE. I’m the owner of Business Lane and since I’ve NEVER done one of these 5-things-about-me posts, today would be a good day to start. 01. My title here is Lead Keeper of Books; not just because my occupation is a bookkeeper but because I am also a giant book worm with an enormous to-be-read-pile. Ok, its not even a pile, it’s literally shelves of unread books. I need to work on reading more often. Oops ... 02. I love donuts. But I am gluten intolerant so I can’t eat them. Which makes them more appealing to me. So it’s kinda an obsession over something that’s become a magical food in my little food-allergy brain 03. I’d always wanted to be an architect. I have books full of floor plans and façade designs from my childhood. Dreaming up homes was one of my favourite things to do. I’m not sure how I ended up *here* instead of *there* but I think what I do now is still pretty cool 04. I’m a teeny tiny 156cm tall. But don’t ever look at me and tell me I’m too small to pick up something heavy. I am strong than I look, and stubborn as hell so I’d pick up the nearest heavy thing to prove my point 05. I’m not a fan of noise. I write this while I’m on the train listening to people talk on their phones on speaker and my gosh it gets under my skin. I can also hear people’s music and someone blowing their nose, and I’m getting an eye twitch from the stress Phew! There we go. I’ve done it. I feel so much more *instaworthy*. Now please, tell me a story about you

08.01.2022 Heard about Facebook Pixel and thought it sounded fascinating but you have no idea WTF to do with it? Two of our favourite clients have worked together to bring you such awesome advice. So proud to work with these gorgeous humans

07.01.2022 http:// ONWARD With the start of shiny new year and new decade upon us, the world is a mix of excitement, disappointment, reflection, goal setting, panic, and relief. What a roller coaster. Seeing everyone's pre-new year posts brought up so much reflection for me and it really hurt my head.... After 2018 quite literally nearly broke me into a million pieces, 2019 was going to 'my year', but personally, it ended up worse than I could ever have dreamed up in my worst nightmares. Business wise though, it's been damn brilliant. We've got THE most amazing clients onboard, we've said ba-bye to not some not-so-amazing clients, we've shifted our processes and plans, and spent a lot of time working on pricing so that we're no longer working for half the dollars we should be. Personally, I've mined so much resilience and determination and grit. And while I absolutely will never declare that any year will be 'mine' ever again for fear of jinxing things, 2020 is looking really shiny. There's a billion things to be grateful for, and a lot of things in my control that I can make better. Onward (or as my very wonderful best mate would say, Smash Forth)

07.01.2022 http:// BACK BONE Something common among so many of my biz friends is a lack of confidence. You know, sometimes we feel like we are nailing all the things, kicking all the goals, and everything is going amazingly well. Then sometimes something shifts and we’re doubting what to charge, we are letting clients get away with paying late or not at all, and we are sorry-ing and just-ing in all of our emails like nervous little cherubs who’ve lost their worth. I know I’m not alone ...in this, so please, dear biz friends who feel this way, know that you don’t have to let people walk all over you. That shitty email full of attitude? Reply with confidence. That quote you’re telling yourself you should discount? Leave as is and send with confidence. Clients not paying when they should? Tell them their work ceases until they pay, with back bone. You got this. And to biz friends shooting out emails with shitty attitudes that knock the confidence of others? Stop it. Thanks. @ #itscooltobekind #killthemwithconfidence #youdontmakefriendswithattitude See more

06.01.2022 http:// DEAR JOHN I’ve been hearing a lot of things this guy has been telling you lately. On average, he’s wrong 99% of the time. Especially so if he says his info came from his accountant. Please be mindful of taking advice from John. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. And he’s probably drunk (I ain’t judging).... If you’re feeling a bit confused (ha! Aren’t we all?!) please reach out. I’m here and more than happy to help. Stay safe out there, my friends. Enjoy your drinks with John, but wash your hands of his tax advice.

01.01.2022 http:// APRIL Oh hello my pretties! It's been a hot minute since we last served up our monthly checklists, I know! Easter is my new fav holiday season.
