16.01.2022 Does the thought of standing up in front of a group of people fill you with a sense of dread? You're not alone. The National Institute of Mental Health in the US reports that public speaking anxiety, affects about 73% of the population. The underlying fear is judgment or negative evaluation by others.... Toastmasters provides a safe space for you to practice speaking in front of a group of people and receive constructive feedback to help you improve. We're all here for the same reason. We're all working through our nerves. We're all building our confidence. We're all looking for improvement in ourselves. Right now Toastmasters is online. 16.01.2022 Congratulations to Melissa Blakiston and Paul Ham for being recognised for your Toastmaster achievements over the past 12 months presented by BLT President Tony Scott. Paul received the trophy for Most Improved Toastmaster and the Spirit of Success award. The Most Improved Toastmaster is awarded to the toastmaster that the committee believes has shown the most improvement in their presentation throughout the year. Paul constantly pushed himself with his public speaking ...throughout the year. The Spirit of Success award is awarded by the President, for a member who embodies the spirit of Toastmasters and willingly contributes to the success of BLT. Paul has contributed significantly to the club this past year by taking up multiple roles on the executive committee, promoting the club at numerous events across Townsville and recruiting new members. We are a much better club thanks to the contribution of Paul this year. Melissa was awarded the prestigious Toastmaster of the Year trophy. This award recognizes one member of the club whose educational accomplishments, club service, dedication and enthusiasm are deemed exceptional. Our Vice President of Education tallied the various achievements of members along with votes from the committee as a whole. Congratulations on your accomplishments and achievements Paul and Melissa. Thank you for helping make BLT Toastmasters the wonderful club it is.

07.01.2022 Word of the Day - Digress To leave the main subject temporarily in speech or writing. At each Toastmasters meeting our member in the role of Grammarian will provide a Word of the Day which we are challenged to use throughout the course of the meeting in context. This is designed to expand our vocabulary.... Throughout the meeting the Grammarian will keep count on how many times the word was used correctly, identify other interesting words used throughout the day and keep track of the dreaded 'ums'. Another way Toastmasters helps build your confidence with speaking in public.
