20.01.2022 LOCAL ENGINEERING EXPERTISE SHINES AT ROWING CLUB Reconstruction of the $1.6 million Manning River Rowing Club Redevelopment has highlighted construction and engineering expertise available in the MidCoast area. Nabiac-based Primmer Steel erected the first stage of the club’s external superstructure which will give the club its futuristic new look in the months ahead as it takes shape. ... Six steel supports, which hold up the huge new curved roof overlooking a riverside terrace, were locked into place today. The club is being rebuilt following a freak storm on March 9 2019, which destroyed the top half of the club and smashed countless boats during a rowing regatta. Business owner Mark Primmer was there to deliver and supervise the positioning of the roof supports alongside his apprentice Brodie Trotter. Mark has designed and fabricated the steel componentry for the building with vital input from local civil engineers Matrix Engineering, of Oxley Island. Rowing Club Project Manager, Tony Beeton, is delighted that more than 85% of the building’s content and professional expertise has been supplied locally, leading to efficiencies and employment continuity in the civil sector.

10.01.2022 TAREE RIDING A NEW WAVE IN TECHNICAL SERVICES Craig Webster, Mobile Phone Repairs, 164 Victoria Street, Taree Craig Webster is confident that Taree is about to ride a new wave of business prosperity centred around professional and technical services. ... Having been in business in Taree for 30 years, 28 years at Computers and Things, and the last two in his own mobile repair shop, Craig has seen his fair share of local trends. We’re in the middle of a palm-held revolution where most mobile phones are now more powerful than computers, so most people don’t even need to worry about a computer anymore, said Craig. Covid-19 has given everything a big shakeup, and cities like Taree are now reaping the benefits as people reassess their lifestyles, move here and gear up with the latest IT equipment. As knowledge-centred businesses take off, mobile phones and tablets become an indispensable part of the business toolkit. As a former part-time Adult Ed teacher, Craig is relaxed about being the first port of call when mature-aged people have problems with their phones. The QR code requirement at all restaurants and cafes is just one of the many things he helps people understand on a frequent basis. One 78-year-old customer mastered phone calls and messages, so I taught him how to do video messages so he could communicate with his grandchildren more frequently. I take the personalised approach, because the chain stores just don’t have time for that, Craig said. People can start small and build on their experience with phones. There are inevitably problems and that’s when Craig’s experience repairing and adding to their phones with apps and accessories comes into its own. The whole of the Taree CBD is becoming more service orientated and this is going to improve even more when the promised NBN upgrade to ‘fibre-to-the-premises’ delivers considerably better speeds and download times. And when the university gets up and running in 2021, that’s going to continue to change the look and feel of things. I predict this will grow the support industries and knowledge-centred businesses around Taree.
