22.01.2022 Community members are invited to a special tree planting to commemorate World Peace Day and the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. The Gingko biloba sapling being planted has been grown from a seed from a tree that was burnt but survived the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. 21.01.2022 Japanese Immersion Opportunity Year 9 School Students within the COB With the annual Year Nine student exchange between Sugito and Busselton being cancelled due to the Covid virus, the Busselton and Sugito Sister City Association (BASSCA) is offering students an opportunity for a one day Japanese immersion in Perth.... The cost of the excursion will be heavily subsided by BASSCA. Students will travel to Perth by bus early in the morning and return late the same day. Students will require a mobile phone for ease of contact and they will be well supervised on the day. They will be required to adhere to high standards of appropriate behaviour. . 20.01.2022 This year marks 75 years since an atomic bomb was detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima killing hundreds of thousands of people. Despite many survivors believing nothing would grow in the city for decades, 170 trees survived and are still growing today. Seeds from these trees are sent around the world spreading a message of peace and hope. ... Tomoko Watanabe is a co-founder of the project and spoke to Witness History.

15.01.2022 Today marks 75 years since the bombing of Hiroshima in Japan and the bombing of Nagasaki that followed on the 9th of August. As part of the City’s commitment to the Mayors for Peace program, a number of initiatives will be undertaken in recognition of this milestone and to support the wishes of the hibakusah (the survivors of the atomic bombings) for a more peaceful world. These will include a Children’s Art Competition Peaceful Towns 2020,... a special tree planting on World Peace Day and a Hiroshima photographic exhibition. 07.01.2022 Mayor Grant Henley was delighted to meet the new Deputy Consul General of Japan, Perth, Mr Naoki Semmyo last week. He took him to visit the Busselton Sugito Friendship Garden and to see the Sister City mural in Prince Street. Visiting the southwest for the first time, Mr Semmyo was here to attend the Southwest Festival of Japan in Bunbury.

06.01.2022 Last week the Dwight D Eisenhower Memorial was opened in Washington DC in the United States. President Eisenhower established People to People International, a non-government and non-profit organization (now Sister Cities International), to facilitate cross-cultural communication around the world through peace education via international travel experiences for students and adults. Knows as the father of the sister city movement, his vision for the world has never been more relevant.
