25.01.2022 Huge amounts of love and gratitude for Michelle from One Rustic Bloom in Vasse for her support and kindness in creating our beautiful tree of love for our remembrance service tonight at William Barrett and Sons

23.01.2022 Our happy gardening volunteers.

23.01.2022 As you know, BHCI relies 100% on the generosity of the community to ensure we can continue to provide our important services free of charge. This includes our wonderful volunteers in the Hospice Unit at the Busselton Health Campus, as well as our phone and in-person bereavement and complementary therapy support, community education program and carer support provided at the Geographe Bay Centre. Therefore, we wanted to let you know about our new Christmas initiative. We would...Continue reading

19.01.2022 This Christmas will be very tough for the Blennerhassett family. They are among hundreds of local families who have faced unprecedented difficulties and amplified grief following the death of a loved one this year. Sue Blennerhassett, 56, died in May following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. The loss was made even harder with Covid-19 placing significant restrictions on funerals and gatherings. This added to the feelings of isolation in their grief for Sue’s husband... Warren and their daughter Nicole in the months that followed. Help was at hand though and for the past three months, Warren and Nicole have been accessing the grief support and alternative therapies on offer at Busselton Hospice Care Inc.’s Geographe Bay Centre. These sessions have been invaluable, Nicole says. Sharing my grief has been so helpful, it validates all your emotions and makes you realise that it’s understandable to feel the way I feel. Warren was blissfully married to Sue for 33 years and, through the support services, is trying to process the fact that their life together had been cut short. We were looking forward to retiring together, enjoying the grandkids and travelling. I lost her too soon. Nicole and Warren are sharing their experiences to make people aware of the services available through Busselton Hospice Care Inc. Please support people struggling with grief this Christmas by making a donation to Busselton Hospice Care Inc. in lieu of a Christmas gift. A gift of: $25 will ensure someone on their end of life journey, or their carer can receive a complementary therapy session. $50 will ensure an online carer education workshop can be run, to educate loved ones on how they can best care for their family member at home. $100 will train one new volunteer to support individuals and their loved ones through dying, death and bereavement. $250 will support one person through their end of life journey, with all of our services. If you’re struggling with grief or feelings of isolation, call our free Grief Support and Call Companioning line on 0492 862 225. The line is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. Donate your gift of support now. <3 https://busselton-hospice-care-inc.giveeasy.org/christmas-a Thank you!

17.01.2022 http://busselton-hospice-care-inc.giveeasy.org/christmas-ap Christmas is meant to be a joyful time with lots of anticipation of spending time with friends and family, enjoying time off together, wonderful gifts, great food and drinks and lots of it. Everywhere you look there are images of happy people, families, children. Every conversation begins with, ‘What are your plans for Christmas?’ For some people, this will be their first Christmas in a year when someone very import...ant to them has died. None of it will make sense. They won’t fit into the Christmas scenery all around them and yet they’ll be caught up in it and expected to join in. This is also the case for many others who have survived that first Christmas but find the experience of missing and longing for someone who is no longer there is still deeply painful with each passing year. This Christmas, you can change that experience for someone, or maybe a few people. Maybe it is your friend, a colleague at work, your neighbour, or someone you’ve never met? Instead of feeling left out during this festive season, let them know you’re thinking of them by giving a donation to Busselton Hospice Care Inc. that will provide a ‘moment’ of compassion instead of buying ‘things’ for your family and friends. Your gift will make someone else’s hardest time in their lives, a little easier. $25 will ensure someone on their end of life journey, or their carer can receive a complementary therapy session. $50 will ensure an online carer education workshop can be run, to educate loved ones on how they can best care for their family member at home. $100 will train one new volunteer to support individuals and their loved ones through dying, death and bereavement. $250 will support one person through their end of life journey, with all of our services. 17.01.2022 Gift giving has become a strange thing. Some of us have much more than we need. Too many of us don't have enough. I seem to routinely find myself grappling with the perennial question 'what do you give someone who has everything'? Well, now I have an answer that I love. I'm giving my friends and family donations to BHCI on their behalf. I can't think of a better gift to give than to ease someone's burden in the final stages of their life. It's such an important time to know t...hat there is so much good in the world and that people want to share it. I think it's the perfect gift. Helen, BHCI Christmas Appeal Donor A gift of: $25 will ensure someone on their end of life journey, or their carer can receive a complementary therapy session. $50 will ensure an online carer education workshop can be run, to educate loved ones on how they can best care for their family member at home. $100 will train one new volunteer to support individuals and their loved ones through dying, death and bereavement. $250 will support one person through their end of life journey, with all of our services. 15.01.2022 Bequests have always been a significant financial support for BHCI, enabling us to offer our services to the local community free of charge. One very significant bequest was earmarked some years ago to convert the previous Hospice Inpatient facility to the Geographe Bay Centre in order to offer the new programs to those at the end of life and their loved ones. From this bequest we were able to create a beautiful and uplifting space for those receiving palliative care treatmen...ts to come for supportive therapies and for the bereaved to receive support and connection with others. This is also a place where our volunteers receive training and community workshops are held. Those who attend comment that it is a place where they experience peace and wellbeing. Generous bequests received during 2017/18 were used to establish and operate the current bereavement support service and the complementary therapy program which have made a significant difference to the experience of those dealing with the challenges of declining health and of loss. The support is available to those at the end of life and their carers and extends beyond the death to those who are making the adjustment to life without their loved one. If you would like to expolore how you can shape your legacy, please contact our CEO Rosie Brown for a confidential and unconditional discussion about the range of options you can consider. Call Rosie on 9751 1642 or email to [email protected].

14.01.2022 , is the theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week, a week that recognises and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of our nation’s... first peoples. This year’s theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for more than 65,000 years and invites us to embrace our country’s true history. Today we unveiled new welcoming artwork by local artist Cassie Jetta, installed in the front hospital entry way. This artwork depicts elements of local Aboriginal culture whole honouring the traditions and values of St John of God Health Care. Kaya (Hello) and Wandjoo (Welcome) are Noongar words, to respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which our hospital stands. The land is home to native flora and fauna including the reeds flowing across the artwork, kangaroos, and a wide variety of bird life. The Aboriginal symbol for meeting place acknowledges the tradition of gathering around a campfire for healing. This week, we, along with Bunbury Hospital, will be hosting events to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and we encourage our caregivers, patients and visitors to participate wherever you can.

14.01.2022 Today we enjoyed a wonderful xmas breakfast for our bereaved men's group. This important program has developed friendships, connection and compassion and even during the times we couldn't come together in person during 2020 we stayed connected on the phone. Supporting each other through the pain of grief can be the ray of sunshine that makes a huge difference. <3 Huge thanks to Western Growers Fresh for your kind donation to ensure our support programs continue to strengthen our community. <3

12.01.2022 Business was brisk at the Busselton Hospice Care Inc. (BHCI) stall at the Art Geo Christmas Bazaar on Saturday. The cultural precinct was buzzing with entertainment, stalls, art displays and of course, the impressive vintage cars, so lovingly restored for everyone to admire. 07.01.2022 "What do you think of when you hear ‘palliative care’? Being in hospital, pain management and the final days of life? Palliative care is often misinterpreted to... be just end-of-life care, but it’s perhaps better described as quality of life care, or supportive care. The multi-disciplinary approach of palliative care is designed to enable you to live your life to the best of your ability by identifying and supporting your physical, emotional and social needs and wishes." Thanks to Lung Foundation Australia for this insightful article.

03.01.2022 https://busselton-hospice-care-inc.giveeasy.org/christmas-a Christmas can be a really tough time for many people dealing with a loved one’s end of life journey or a recent (or not so recent) bereavement. This year, we know things are going to be really different from almost any other festive break. Many people won’t be able to see their loved ones, separated by state and international borders. Many haven’t seen their loved ones for months or even years now.... This might be the first holiday season some people are bracing themselves for spending without a loved one. It may be the first year you aren’t able to go on holiday or buy your family and friends the gifts you normally would. Busselton Hospice Care Inc. relies on the generosity of the community to ensure we can continue to provide our important services. Not only in our wonderful Hospice Unit, but also our phone and in person bereavement support, complementary therapy service, community education workshops and carer support webinars. When you are considering a gift for a loved one this year, why not choose a gift of compassion? Busselton Hospice Care Inc. will send you a personalised e-card which you can send in an email or print and post or give in person. 02.01.2022 It is a lot more fun to plan for a holiday, a party or a major purchase like a house or a car. We happily devote hours of our time to these things. Planning our estate might not be as much fun, but it is just as important for everyone, not just people who are wealthy! Without a plan in place, the impact on the people you leave behind can be long-lasting and expensive, regardless of what your estate is worth. Here are four good reasons to have an estate plan:... 1. You ensure your beneficiaries receive the gifts you intend them to have, not the courts. 2. Your dependents are provided for if the unthinkable should happen to you. 3. Any tax implications for your beneficiaries can be minimised. 4. You minimise the risk of disputes or arguments over the settling of your estate by clearly describing the way you intend it to be distributed. Busselton Hospice Care Inc. knows people need information about how to plan their estate. We have invited local and experienced solicitor, Mark McAuliffe to present a free Estate Planning seminar at the Geographe Bay Centre, 5 Craig St, Busselton on Tuesday 1st December from 2pm to 3.30pm. Spaces are limited, so register now by calling us on 9751 1642 or register by email [email protected]. Registrations close on Friday 27th November or earlier if booked out.

02.01.2022 After providing for your loved ones, leaving a gift to a cause you care deeply about will help people at the most vulnerable time of their lives. Busselton Hospice Care Inc. offers the services you don’t know you need, until you need them! Until each of us is personally impacted by the rollercoaster of emotions that comes along with a terminal diagnosis, grief, and loss, we don’t think about this most difficult time in life. Your gift will help ensure our volunteers are there... to support people who are dying and their loved ones, to make the most of the ‘rest of life’ for as long as they’re needed. These testimonials are evidence of the support experienced by those who have benefitted from the facilities and services made possible by these bequests: What the volunteers do in the Hospice Unit is amazing. They will never know how much comfort they gave me and my family during my mother-in-law’s illness and final days. When too many visitors turned up at one time, the volunteers gently guided them for short visits, so the family didn’t have to deal with it. That was such a relief. D.M., Family member of Busselton Health Campus Hospice Unit patient This is the best phone call I made after my wife died. This has been a sanctuary and safe haven for me, where I can walk in and cry and talk and walk out with the weight off my shoulders. What I say, stays here and I feel safe. It’s been invaluable to me. P.S, Bereavement Support Client I cannot thank the therapists enough for giving their time to allow me to relax in this sanctuary at such a difficult time. I feel so cared for and when I am here, it takes my mind off the pain. JK, Complementary Therapy Service Client I would encourage everyone who has someone who is very unwell and is caring for them at home to take this course. It was invaluable.
