25.01.2022 Latest project, a '42 WLA military restoration. This bike had been used in the Police Accadmy Show at Movie World in the early days of the show. It is going back to military spec at the owners request. Progress posts to follow.
23.01.2022 After 6 months, the '34 VFD Harley project has now been completed. When the owner sends me the new number plate, I'll be able to fine tune on the road as the Linkert carb has adjustable low and high speed jets. This has been a challenge as finding original parts is getting harder. There are a range of repro parts available overseas, some good and some not so. Many thanks to Ollie at O.E.M for his high standard of machining of the engine parts that has made this engine a very sweet runner.
23.01.2022 The blue one is a customer job which is almost complete and ready to run, waiting for the R /H side tank to come back from the repairers.
22.01.2022 Latest update on the blue '42 Harley is that it is now registered and being ridden around Bundaberg by a very happy owner.
19.01.2022 This is a classic picture of both beauty and style at both levels. These early Sportsters were one of the Superbikes of the day and had a sound of their own.
18.01.2022 The 34 VFD now has a heart beat. This is an initial start up and run just to check fuel and ignition. There is final tuning and adjustments to be made but will wait until ready to be ridden. It is not that far off from completion, so stay tuned, more to come.
17.01.2022 '34 VFD Harley project has the engine all sealed up and in the frame to stay. This engine has been completely rebuilt with the cylinders sleeved back to standard, cast iron pistons replaced with later alloy pistons and the crank assembly rebalanced to suit the alloy pistons. There are a few parts still being sourced but not far off from some fuel and spark. Stay tuned for the next instalment.
15.01.2022 This 1942 WLA Harley is now finished, tested and ridden. It's not an authentic military restoration as the owner wanted it to be a bit different. It is missing some of the standard military items such as windshield, rifle scabbard, ammo box, bash plate and saddlebags which he may want to fit at a later date. The colour is not correct as it was the owners choice but still a nice end result. If you happen to be in the Bundaberg area, you will probably see it cruising around.
14.01.2022 A couple of pic's of the latest project, one of when it was working at Movie World on the Gold Coast, and the other is where we are up to at present. The owner wanted it to look military but not 100% correct, he wants something just a bit different. Possibly up and rideable by Xmas '19.
13.01.2022 The unfinished project that was brought to me is now finished and ready for the road. After a lot of corrections, including engine internal work, this bike has turned out to be a sweet runner that rides quite nicely. The owner is now looking forward to throwing a leg over and wheeling it down the road. It was a satisfying job, as what needed to be done, was done. Check out the video in another post.
12.01.2022 If you or anyone you know that is looking for that elusive motorcycle part, this could be the location.
10.01.2022 The '34VFD Harley project is on the move again with the painted tins being fitted. Front wheel is getting full brake rebuild, front fork rockers rebushed with new pivot pins. The rear wheel will have the same after front is reinstalled. All new nuts and bolts are being re-machined to replicate what the factory fitted in the day. Very little chrome on this model as the factory was cutting back to save money on production costs.
10.01.2022 Video of the WLA Harley that was brought to me for completion. Running, rideable and ready for delivery.
09.01.2022 Here is something of interest, a 1919 J Model Harely Davidson. When I saw this unit, I knew there was something different about it as it had a R/Hand sidecar, meaning that it wasn't used in Australia. If in doubt, give Google Chrome a shout. I did a search and came across a link to a YouTube clip showing this exact same bike. To cut a long story short, this bike was owned by Bud Ekins who was a stunt rider and close friend of Steve McQueen. Bud Ekins was the rider who did the famous jump scene in the movie, The Great Escape which Steve McQueen starred in. McQueen was quite able to do the stunt but the movie bosses had too much money invested in McQueen and wouldn't let him do it. I feel very privileged to have been able to experience a bit of movie history.
09.01.2022 Progress has restarted with the '34 VFD Harley project. The tins have been painted and dropped off ready for fitting. The colours are correct for the year, Orlando Orange and Black with gold pinstriping around the panels. Correct position of panels and Winged Diamond tank panels. This bike is going to be stunning when completed. Ollie from O. E. M. is busy with the engine machining so I can get the engine reassembled and back in the frame. More updates to come, stay tuned.
08.01.2022 About time for another post. This is a Triumph Tiger 800XCX with cracked centre cylinder liner, cause unknown due to various possibilities. Complete engine teardown to replace one cylinder liner as the others will need resealing due to being disturbed. Should be up and running again soon.
07.01.2022 XLCH Sportster that has had a carburetor clean and reset. This bike has had the original and troublsome carb replaced with a later style CV carb which is a good option if installed correctly and set up well. They make an old Ironhead start much easier and run smoothly. The dragpipe style exhaust is baffled for back pressure to make it rideable for street use.
07.01.2022 Latest update on the 34 VFD Harley project. The engine machining has been completed and is now being assembled. The bottom end is back in the frame awaiting the top end installation pending final clean and painting of cylinders and heads. Stay tuned, more to come.
06.01.2022 1951 Matchless 350 3G. This bike required full clutch o/haul and gearbox repair. Magneto needed retiming and carb has been reset. This bike starts easy, runs nicely and is a pleasure to ride.
05.01.2022 This is the next resto project for a customer. 42WLA Harley that was used by Movie World on the Gold Coast. It was part of the Police Accadmy Show in the early days, also had a sidecar fitted then. The current owner intends to restore it back to military spec, so it will be a bit of an undertaking to source the missing military items. Progress pics will be posted.
