23.01.2022 Asthma effects around 2.7 million Australians, which estimates to around 1 in every 9 individuals. Asthma can occur at any stage of life and can be chronic, causing increased shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing in the early mornings or nights, or as short episodes as a reaction to exercise, change of season (pollens) or dust. Exercise has been proven to be an important management tool in those with asthma. Exercise can: - Improve gas exchange at the lungs (meaning th...e blood can take up oxygen more efficiently) - Improve lung capacity - Improve immune system (to reduce risk of respiratory tract infections) -Improve the hearts ability to pump oxygenated blood to the muscles & the muscles ability to use the oxygen supplied = improved overall fitness - Reduce stress and increase mood - Assist with weight loss (which improves asthma symptoms) If you have been diagnosed with asthma or any chronic lung condition, working out with an Exercise Physiologist can be a great way to manage symptoms, improve your quality of life and get you back to the activities you enjoy. Just remember to always bring your reliever/medications with you to exercise and have an asthma management plan in place!

21.01.2022 Very interesting new research coming up with the goods on exercise. Exercise has long been seen as a crucial treatment for diabetes but now it can potentially be a cure!

20.01.2022 It's National Diabetes Week! Did you know: That 1.6 million Australians are currently living with some form of diabetes and that this number is increasing every year? There was 100,000 people diagnosed this year alone. ... And that, exercise can reduce your risk of developing and managing diabetes? This is because exercises reduces blood sugar spikes for over 48 hours! That means reduced risk of developing diabetes complications such as insulin resistance, blindness, heart disease and nerve damage in your limbs (reducing your risk of amputation). So, really the question is why wouldn't you exercise? If you don't know where to start take this quiz to calculate your risk of developing diabetes. Then come talk to one of our exercise physiologists about exercising with us. https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/risk-calculator One of our exercise physiologists can also assist you in your management of diabetes. If you're diagnosed with diabetes, you are eligible to 5 sessions subsidised through medicare. Because we believe that diabetes should not stop you from living up to your full potential.

11.01.2022 Is weight the best way to measure Health? The short answer is no. Obesity is one of the most common topics discussed in regards to health. However, weight itself is not the only factor which feeds into a healthy lifestyle. This is where the fit vs fat principle comes in. Since Framingham's study compared the use of physical activity on outcomes in those with increased adiposity (fat), there has been much debate about just how harmful obesity is. So, what does this mean? Th...e bad news: Obesity is a risk factory for many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, joint issues and various lifestyle cancers Many people classified as overweight or obese are actually malnourished - meaning they have increased fatigue and increased risk of fractures, muscle and joint injuries, plus increased stress on the heart. In 2016, 340 million children (aged 5-19) were classified as obese. The good news: Many studies have described the effect of exercise independently improves health outcomes. This means, regardless of your fat content, the amount of exercise and physical activity you do determines your risk of developing disease. For example, the risk of death/disease amongst a physical fit "skinny"person and a physically fit "obese" person is actually the same. Therefore, stop obsessing over a number on the scales to tell you about your health and start focusing on your health behaviours. Focusing on achieving your 30 minutes of physical activity every day and including more fruits and vegetables in your diet is the perfect way to start. If you want a tailored program and support for your healthy lifestyle journey, book in with us today! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov//a/PMC2811477/pdf/zdcS392.pdf

06.01.2022 Happy surprise to end the day! Always happy to see my clients bringing in their furry friends . Say hello to Luca!

06.01.2022 Want to share a big win for this week! 4 weeks ago Gordon was not able to get out of a chair without assistance or move the sled . His long term Parkinson’s had led to massive muscle wastage in his legs and was left weak and a big risk of falls. Fast forward to now he can not only push the sled but also do it with additional weight! We are both super happy with progress he has made and are looking to set even harder challenges for him in the future !!... Don’t ever let your disability or current capacity define you, improvement will always come to those who seek it.

05.01.2022 Another day another beautiful boy . Fresh from the groomers

02.01.2022 It is with the utmost joy that today I announce the addition of Alyssa to our Busy Bodies family! As a new graduate from the University of Queensland she is looking forward to being able to start applying all of her new knowledge in a private setting. She has a strong passion for care and has a strong interest in chronic pain management. If that wasn’t impressive enough she’s also currently studying a postgraduate master degree in Physiotherapy to be able to provide even mor...e care! In typical me fashion I have thrown her straight into the deep end and can be seen here at her first referral networking meeting with Care by Phoenix a Community support program run down at Wynnum. As you can see being tall is a prerequisite for being a clinical exercise physiologist! I look forward to all my Busy Bodies Family getting the pleasure of being treated by her !
