24.01.2022 Understanding Autism in Girls With research into recognising Autism (ASD) in girls progressing, we are learning it may be more prevalent than what was once thought. The current ratio is one girl to every four boys being diagnosed with autism. However, growing bodies of research suggest ASD may be equally as prevalent in girls as it is in boys. Although there are some common traits between the two, it appears girls do present a little differently to boys. Girls may not show la...nguage delays, and their areas of special interest are often different to boys, with many having a fascination with animals, fantasy or music. Girls tend to have fewer aggressive outbursts (especially away from the home), but will often show internalising behaviours and have higher levels of anxiety. In terms of socialising, girls on the spectrum are often very interested in being social, but will mimic social interactions as a means to ‘fit in’. Their social interactions may appear rehearsed and they sometimes experience a lot of confusion in this area. Particularly as girls get older, when social demands become greater and more complex, they may experience difficulties making and keeping friends. Girls on the spectrum may be described as quiet, shy and anxious and like to have one mother hen friend at a time. Although every individual is different, autistic girls can be particularly creative, artistic and imaginative and also enjoy engaging in elaborate fantasy worlds. Passionate, restricted and specific interests is a particularly common trait, and conversations are typically restricted to these limited topics of interest. Understanding social boundaries may be difficult and girls may experience emotional reactions which seem over the top in comparison to the size of the issue. They may experience sensory differences which can make it challenging to navigate the world and also difficult to navigate their feelings when frustrated. This in turn may lead to excessive defiance as they persistently try to control their world. Why does a diagnosis and support matter? Undiagnosed and unsupported ASD can manifest as many other serious mental health conditions such as eating disorders, anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. Through understanding the varied complexities that girls on the spectrum face, we aim to raise awareness and see more young girls engaged in support opportunities. https://www.autismawareness.com.au/could-/autism-and-girls/

18.01.2022 "Oh yeah, we're good, I'm fine," she says. But her eyes feel so tired. Her brain is so full. She juggles every day, making sure that the right sensory tools are in her bag, running between appointments, searching for information, and dreading that next email or call from school. Her kids are so beautiful, full of incredible moments and so much joy. She wishes every day that others could see through her eyes, to get to know the precious child she adores. ... She worries. Will her daughter make friends? Will her son find his place in this world? Will they be safe? Is she enough? She gives her whole heart to her amazing little person. She learns new things every day. She tries so hard to be patient, even when she has nothing left to share. She is brave. She is strong. And she knows a deep, and amazing love <3 Nurturing Busy Little Brains- Connection and Guidance for Autism Parents is all about connecting with others who understand, while celebrating the incredible individuality and personalities of each child and family. We would love to welcome you to our village

12.01.2022 Understanding Autism - Any change is BIG To many, a change in plans may seem like a small bump in the road, however, children on the spectrum process things a little differently. It’s inevitable, sometimes, sudden changes to our plans or routines occur and these seemingly small changes can often result in big and unpredictable reactions. So how can we understand what’s really happening and help our little ones through this? Even the slightest change can bring about a wide a...rray of emotions such as shock, disappointment, excitement, anger or fear. This often presents in the form of unwanted behaviours including emotional and physical outbursts, meltdowns, hyperactivity and lack of cooperation. Understanding what’s really happening can help us support children to move through changes more easily. Patience and understanding is key. Children also need to know, as soon as reasonably practical, what will be happening next and be given time to process the change. Alongside this, clear and concise language and visual supports can be a great help.
