25.01.2022 COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT On Saturday 28 November, The Gateway Shopping Precinct Alkimos Beach will be hosting WA’s very first community-wide Boardies Day to raise money for local Surf Clubs. The concept of Boardies Day is simple show up in your boardies, beach attire or red and yellow clothing in return for a gold coin donation to help save lives on West Aussie beaches. Gateway Businesses will be participating in the day too, pop by and help support your local Surf Life Savin...g and meet the team! Alkimos SLSC car wash from 9am 11am Bubble Mania 10am 1pm Fun Balloon display to snap a photo in your favourite boardies.... We can’t wait for you to #showusyourboardies! All funds raised during Boardies Day will go to support Surf Life Saving WA.



24.01.2022 Congratulations to Linda Wilkinson, our Manager Corporate Services! Linda was recognised last night at a gala dinner held at Crown, as one of only 3 finalists across the state, for the award of Outstanding Manager Corporate Services! Whilst Linda did not win the title she is a winner in our eyes and we are so proud that she was a finalist in only our first year!

24.01.2022 Term 3 after-school Academies: Academies will commence from week 2 (from Monday 27 July). Students will be able to collect a form from Student Services on Wednesday, if they wish to sign up for any Academies.... All forms will need to be signed by a parent/carer and returned by Friday 24 July, and will be on a first come, first served basis. There will be a range of existing Academies, plus a few new choices available for this term! Students currently enrolled in existing Academies (from Term 2), will still need to complete a form to ensure their place in Term 3. Please note: The Library will be open after-school until 4.00pm this week for students to do Home-study.

24.01.2022 Parents and carers are reminded that this Friday 14 August is a Professional Development Day for Alkimos College. Students do not attend the college on this day. All students will return to the college on Monday 17 August.... All school development days and term dates can be found on our website and on Connect. 22.01.2022 Launching our new HOUSE SYSTEM! We had a special assembly on Friday to launch our new House System and issue students with their House Buffs! Our gym looked great with our new House banners and flags!... Our House Captains will help run all assemblies and volunteering first were Kyra and Papa - House Captains for Socrates! Mr Tan went through the House Point allocation and then Mr Hatzis, with the help of 'models' Kyra and Papa, demonstrated some of the ways that students can wear their buffs! Buffs have been provided to all students at the college free of charge. We suggest students put their initials on the inside of the buff and gently hand wash them regularly. Students are welcome to wear their buffs to college and represent their Houses proudly every day! Replacement buffs can be purchased from the Front Office for $5.

22.01.2022 Enrolments for VacSwim in October and January are now open! VacSwim offers swimming lessons for children aged five to 17 years during the October and summer school holidays. Lessons are conducted at pools and open water venues across Western Australia. Take the plunge! Find a program near you and enrol now (see link at the bottom of this post).... VacSwim has helped children across Western Australia to stay safe and confident in the water for over 100 years. We offer: Vital swimming and water safety skills Lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmers A variety of programs ranging from five to ten days Opportunities to progress through stages 1-16 and obtain Bronze Medallion Lessons at over 180 pool and beach locations throughout Western Australia Friendly, qualified swimming staff. 21.01.2022 Hear what some of our students have to say about Alkimos College! Last week we held three after-school parent & student tours for those that have submitted an application for enrolment in 2021. We had over 200 parents and excited Year 6 students come along for a walking tour and an information session.... A few of our students contributed to a short video (thanks Mr Hatzis!) that we showed - in their own words explaining what they liked about the college!

20.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 8 - 15 November NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia normally each July (delayed this year due to COVID) to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.... During selected classes this week our students will be learning about one particular influential Aboriginal man, David Unaipon, whose face is on the Australian $50 note. Thank you to Laura Bateson, our Student Services Coordinator, who is organising lessons and break time activities this week.

16.01.2022 INTRODUCING OUR INAUGURAL HOUSE CAPTAINS! Over the last semester students have been coming up with ideas for our college Houses - doing research and coming up with names and colours. The process eventually came down to 2 choices (Greek Gods or Greek Philosophers), which was determined by a survey of all students and staff. The results were very close but the people have spoken and it is - Greek Philosophers!... Houses are determined as follows: 1. Socrates (Green) Surnames A-D 2. Plato (Yello) Surnames E-K 3. Democritus (Red) Surnames L-R 4. Aristotle (Blue) Surnames S-Z Students were then able to nominate to be House Captain. Nominated students were shortlisted and asked to submit a speech, which they then delivered to the whole school, with it voted on by their peers. Congratulations to our inaugural Alkimos College House Captains: Socrates - Kryra Charnley & Papa Baako Plato - John Kasongo & Mikey Khatibi Democritus - Evie Richards & Rori Nugent Aristotle - Ava Witt & Ollie Savoury Our House Captains were announced at our end of term assembly and presented with their badges. We are looking forward to our officlal launch of the House system next week - with a special House gift to be provided to every student - stay tuned!!

15.01.2022 Today is WEAR IT PURPLE DAY. College staff are wearing purple today to foster and promote supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people. Wear it Purple was founded in 2010 in response to global stories of real teenagers, real heartache and their very real responses. Wear it Purple shows young people across the globe that there is hope, that there are people who support and accept them, and that they have the right to be proud of who they ar...e. All students, rainbow or otherwise, are always welcome at Alkimos College, and can seek support from Student Services, at any time. Thanks to our Student Services Coordinator, Ms Bateson for organising the day, with our new 'Alkigram' photo board, wristbands and stickers for students and to Mrs Dinan for entertaining the students at Break 2 with her rainbow parachute!

15.01.2022 EXAM WEEK: Our Alpha & Aspire (academic extension program) students are in the midst of their Semester 2 exams for MESH (Maths, English, Science, HASS) this week. Our Maths' teacher Mr Yap has been running some fun and engaging exam revision sessions with both classes together - even writing Maths problems on the windows for students!... Science was the first exam yesterday and Mrs Fuller and Mr Giles are already busily marking the papers! We have HASS tomorrow, Maths on Thursday and English on Friday! Thank you to our dedicated Alpha & Aspire teachers - Mr Yap, Mr Martin, Mrs McSweeeney, Miss Noble, Mrs Fuller, Mr Giles, Mr Atkins - for all of the extra work they have done preparing exam revision packages, revision lessons in class time and running after-school sessions too! They all go above and beyond to support our students!

15.01.2022 SEMESTER 1 AWARDS: We were very pleased to be able to finally hold a whole of college assembly on the last day of Term 2. We were able to recognise a number of students for academic achievement, attendance, demonstrating the 'Alkimos Approach' and also announce our inaugural House Captains!... Featured are our Semester 1 Award Winners for each learning area - congratulations to all of these students!

14.01.2022 FOUND POETRY: In our English classes students have been producing wonderful pieces of Found Poetry. Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them (a literary equivalent of a collage) by making changes in spacing and lines, or by adding or deleting text, thus imparting new meaning.... Poems have been on display in the Library for students and staff to vote for their favourite. Winners will be announced at our end of term assembly. Thankyou to our HOLA English - Mrs McSweeney, Miss Noble and Mrs Dinan for the work they have produced with their English classes. Also thanks to Mrs Lavender for the wonderful display and Mr Bastow for the display boards!

12.01.2022 Art & Tech Showcase and Parent/Teacher Interviews: A great afternoon at the college today with our Semester 1 Parent/Teacher Interviews. We had 249 slots filled, with the teachers all very busy with back to back interviews! Thank you to all the parents/carers that were able to attend this afternoon and a reminder for those that were not able to book in - you are welcome to contact your childs teachers at any time to book a phone or face-to-face interview.... We also had some fantastic student work on display from our students that have been doing Arts & Technology this semester.

12.01.2022 As part of the Biological Sciences unit this term, students in Mr Giles and Mrs Fuller's Science classes are participating in a practical on how to safely dissect a fish and identify the external and internal fish anatomy!

In-between enjoying their chicken feast they put forward some great ideas and asked lots of really good questions too!... 04.01.2022 Shorehaven Primary School (planning name) located on Shorehaven Boulevard, will be open for K-6 students in 2022. Shorehaven PS will become another one of Alkimos Colleges partner primary schools, joining John Butler PC, Alkimos PS and Alkimos Beach PS.

04.01.2022 Athletics Sports Fun Day! We have had a massive day at Alkimos College! Our day kicked off with students engaging in 2 x fun sessions of their choice, before a break and then commencing our sports carnival. The early morning sessions provided something for everyone with a great range of sessions on offer, including - Mindfulness, origami, Multo, craft, Kahoot quiz, treetop lions, e-sports, volleyball, dance, American flag football, chess and yoga.... 04.01.2022 Congratulations to Linda Wilkinson! Ms McNally nominated our Manager, Corporate Services - Linda Wilkinson, for the WA Education Corporate Services Staff Association (WAECSSA) Oustanding Administrative Support Officer Award for 2020. We are thrilled that Linda has been selected as one of only 3 finalists from across the state!... Linda has received a Certificate of Recognition and will be attending the WAECSSA Conference next Thursday and the Awards Dinner, when they will announce the winner! Our college Executive Team will all be attending the Awards Dinner to celebrate and support our fabulous Linda! We all think she is a winner regardless!

02.01.2022 BIRDS OF PREY INCURSION! What an exciting end to Science Week here at Alkimos College! Staff and students were so lucky this morning to have Yvonne and Mike from the WA Birds of Prey Centre visit our school to conduct an amazing incursion!... This was a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with natures top predators! We learned so much about birds of prey. A range of birds (eagles, falcons, owls, kites) were displayed on the glove, followed by 'hands-on' with a few of the birds. We even got to see a 3 week old baby owl! Thanks so much to Mrs Fuller and Mr Giles for organising this amazing experience - I think some of the staff were even more excited than the students!!

01.01.2022 R U OK? Day (Thursday 10 September, 2020) is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? and support those struggling with life's ups and downs. This year's message is 'There's more to say after R U OK?' At the college we took time to recognise this important day earlier in the week to allow all of our Student Services team members to be on-site and participate.... Special thank you to Ms Bateson (Student Services Coordinator) and her team in organising the day and activities for students at break times.
