25.01.2022 5 Tips To Managing Behaviours Managing behaviors and boundaries is an ongoing process and while it can feel daunting to set and keep boundaries, it’s a great lesson for everyone in a family. Kids that grow up with well managed and healthy boundaries become well functioning adults who can better manage stressors and situations. 1 Clear Communication - Most of us thrive when we know what is expected of us and kids are the same! Be clear and concise with your communication. Th...ere should be a clear understanding of what is acceptable behavior and what isn’t and what are the consequences from not acting in the boundaries. They need to be child appropriate and everyone in the family needs to be accountable to them - there can’t be one set of rules for adults and one for kids. 2 Involve everyone - To feel ownership over the rules, everyone needs to be part of the creating them. Every voice can be heard, and acknowledged when creating the guidelines for the family. Even if as a parent you need to modify the guidelines, listening to and acknowledging each person's thoughts creates a level of mutual respect. 3 Display in a common area - When guidelines and rules are front of mind they are likely to be followed. As part of the input process, each family member can draw or write out a rule and what it means to them. Then place the posters in the kitchen or other common space where it can be seen and the values referenced when necessary. 4 Keep your word - Boundaries and guidelines are only effective if they are followed by everyone! If a boundary or rule is crossed, then there needs to be a consequence (not punishment). It’s vital that as a parent you follow through on the consequences. Working out how to navigate the trials and boundary pushing can be tough yet it is also rewarding. 5 Praise! - Celebrate the wins! Rewarding your child when they follow the rules shows them that the hard work you’re putting in is paying off. When things all go to plan make sure to praise! #behavoursupport #ndisprovider #butterfish #ndis #boundaries #nidssupport #ndisready #ndismelbourne #ndissydney #ndisbrisbane #ndisnewcastle
