23.01.2022 Tuesday 10th November 2020 Two children noticed the poppy on my collar this morning. What is that for? they asked. It is for tomorrow, I told them. Tomorrow is Remembrance Day. We talked about what the day is for - to remember and say thank you to the soldiers who helped keep Australia safe. The poppies grew in one of the fields where the soldiers were fighting a long time ago so we use the poppy to symbolise our thanks. (Age appropriate explanation) Miss Liz flicked thro...ugh the pages of the story book I Was Only Nineteen and we looked at drawings of the soldiers who went to war. We saw a rescue helicopter that had a Red Cross in it. It saved injured soldiers and took them back to the hospital. In a tray there were a selection of red, black and green Loose Parts. We were encouraged to make our own poppy using these. A photo was taken and these individual poppies will be turned into a KB wreath that will be displayed. Miss Liz Kindy Blue
22.01.2022 National Pyjama Day 2020 What an amazing atmosphere we’ve had here at Butterfly today. Children and educators, all in pyjamas, coming together for a great cause, to support little people with big dreams. Together we were able to raise over $200 for children in the foster care system. What a fantastic effort, we are all so grateful for the generosity you’ve shown these children.... I’m sure you’ll see individual room stories coming through on Storypark but we just wanted to highlight some of the moments throughout our wonderful day today. The educators put on such a fantastic day and you can see how excited we all were to share in the fun

09.01.2022 Yesterday we introduced the children to a new risky learning experience of using a firepit (with real fire!) A perfect day to kickstart our firepit experiences, given August the 4th was National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day. For our First Nation's peoples, fire represents a strong link to cultural practices - regenerating land, cooking, keeping warm, sacred ceremonial practices, just to name a few. This Winter, the Brisbane City Council introduced a tr...ial period for community to hold firepits in their back yards. In alignment with this trial period, we endeavour to make use of this wonderful opportunity to incorporate fire experiences with Centre 1. Offering fire pits as a learning experience allows children to build knowledge of and respect for fire dangers in addition to empowering children to self manage risky situations. Risk has been stripped out of the modern playground to the detriment of our children’s physical, social and cognitive development. Risky play is not only exciting for children but prepares them for the adult world by teaching them vital life skills like risk assessment, independence, negotiation, resilience and problem-solving. Hyahno Moser (2017), Program Manager, Nature Play Queensland At Butterfly, underpinning our curriculum is the pedagogical foundations based on the beliefs of our experienced and passionate educators. We believe that play is to be exciting and wonder filled. We also believe if the benefit outweighs the risk, then we accommodate and make it happen. We see all children as competent and capable, needing challenges to grow and learn. It is important for us to use natural materials with the children to teach them about sustainability; and foster a respect for the environment. The children have been instrumental throughout this whole process, from contributing to the Risk Benefit Assessment and setting up the firepit, to cooking on the firepit. Today it was toasting marshmallows to make S'Mores! Many children have been sharing that they have been enjoying campfires with their families, cooking marshmallows and even sausages. Such a fun, learning rich day! Nothing says connection like a relaxed conversation around a firepit!

06.01.2022 This week around the country is NAIDOC Week - an acknowledgement of the histories, cultures and languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the First Australians. While we acknowledge the First Peoples of Australia during NAIDOC Week, we are also working towards embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and ways of knowing and doing throughout our program each and every day. Some of the ways we are doing this:... - An Acknowledgement to Traditional Owners from the local area or region in written form displayed in the centre and undertaken as a daily ritual with the children. - Use of various resources including Aboriginal Flag and a Torres Strait Islander flags, books, puzzles, music, imagery, textiles and dolls that represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, perspectives and cultures. - Educators may also draw on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of teaching when engaging and learning alongside the children such as using natural materials, making land links with local environments, gathering together in a yarning circle, and using symbols and images to represent concepts and natural elements. - Incorporating indigenous shirts in to our uniform, showcasing meaningful designs through collaborations with Indigenous artists to support Indigenous communities.

02.01.2022 First Nations Peoples Were Here First - Thursday 12/11/20 This week we celebrate NAIDOC week; and one of the world’s oldest and enduring cultures - our First Nations Peoples. This morning during fruit time we read the book Welcome to Country.... The illustrations were beautiful! We noticed that there were no ‘houses’, shops, cars, boats in the book, with our discussion extending to incorporate the children’s hypothesis in regards to where our First Nations lived. In the jungle declared one child. In a tent another child informed Kindy Yellow. Following our discussion, Miss Ish suggested that maybe the children could make ‘houses’ in Kindy Yellow, using the resources that they could find. The children were off and running! Or... rather off, planning and building. Busy collecting suitable items to construct their housing. Miss Mary went on a hunting expedition with some children to locate some cloths for children to incorporate into their constructions. Just like our First Nations Peoples, children collected only the resources that were needed. Children had to problem solve as to how to carry, then connect their materials. Working together, Kindy Yellow soon became a community of creative houses! Great work Kindy Yellow! Miss Ish Kindy Yellow
