15.01.2022 The Bethanga Post Office Meet Felicity Conway By Richard Cornish When Felicity Conway bought the Bethanga Post Office, the COVID lockdown was just taking hold. ... The trained fashion designer and former healthcare worker took over the historic community hub in March 2020 with an aim to keep the essential parcel and letter handling facility and other associated work of a licenced post office. She also wanted to expand its offering of giftware. Australia Post has its own range, but Felicity wanted a more local touch, with an array of wonderful products made in the Towong Shire now available on ecommerce marketplace Buy From Corryong & Surrounds (https://www.buyfromcorryong.com.au/) Bethanga is a historic mining and farming town 25 minutes east of Albury on the Victorian side of the Murray River. It is also a hotbed of creativity. With lockdown, people began to explore and develop their creative side, says Felicity. On this peninsula of hills and farmland, we have over 35 different creative people all making beautiful and interesting things. So, I did not have to look too far to stock my shelves. One of the makers who Felicity stocks is Megan from True North Designs, who makes beautifully patterned earrings from baked polymer clay. Another is Bethanga Blooms, a woman who specialises in beautiful fresh floral bouquets (delivered locally only) and small succulent gardens planted out in wonderful quirky settings such as old teapots. Then there’s Peter Klein. He’s a singer, bush poet and known to thousands of kids as Captain Pete and the author of the Mudpoo series of children’s books, available through the Bethanga Post Office. Alongside these are beautiful glazed garden flowers from Lakeside Ceramics. The artist Kim Roebuck, from Bellbridge on Lake Hume, also has created a series of Christmas decorations, including Santa with a mask and more traditional bells. As someone trained in fashion design, the store has allowed Felicity to return to her first love of fashion and accessories. I am a collector of vintage fabrics, she says. I have made these beautiful women’s headbands from 1950s velvet, she says. Felicity has also spent time with brushes and paint palette, working with acrylic to paint local birds on canvas and roosters and goldfish on flat wooden domes. During lockdown, people discovered a new path, says Felicity. They used that time to work on something beautiful and interesting. Now that they have somewhere to sell their products, this little old post office has bought them out of the woodwork.
